Aimed at conducting an assessment of the direct and indirect causes of maternal mortality and severe maternal 

morbidity in the Dominican Republic, where maternal mortality has been estimated at 159 per 100,000 births 

despite near universal coverage of prenatal care and institutional births in the country. We plan to test the 

hypothesis that the majority of maternal deaths would have been prevented if the national guidelines for the care of 

pregnancy, labor and postpartum had been followed. In collaboration with Harvard School of Public Health, the
