Our district has many great members who generously give of their time and
and Leos who have performed a significant service to the association are given
this award at the international president’s discretion. Congratulations to:
Joann Baker of Castlegar/Selkirk Lions: for being the driving force behind her
serving as the District’s membership chair for BC.
PZC Cheryl Ekler of Priest Lake/Kaniksu Lions: Served as the District’s Peace
International President’s Medal of Leadership
Our district knows what a Lion Extraordinaire Lonnie
Morse is. Well, Lions Club International recognizes
this as well. Lonnie was presented with the
International Presidents Medal of Leadership. He has
served as President and Secretary 3 times for the
Rathdrum club. He served as Zone Chair for E3. He
served as President and Secretary of the Southeast
club. He also served 2 years as Zone Chair for E9.
He served as the District’s Cabinet
Secretary/Treasurer for 5 District Governors. He truly
was the DGs right hand man. He served as the
District Chair for LCIF and Contests and Awards. He
also has served as Conference Registration Chair for 7
years, including this year. Lonnie has served as the
Cabinet Chair for Leader Dogs for 3 years, earning an
award for the district being a 100% donation district.
He served as the Registration Chair for the MD 19
Fall Forum. In his own club, he continues to provide
leadership and guidance. He has sponsored members
into his club. He is instrumental in his club being as
successful as they are.
Leaders Needed
The new Lion year is going to be
upon us very soon. I know DGE Ken
has been planning this next year for a
long time. I know he is going to
make an awesome District Governor,
but he can’t do this by himself. It
takes many people to help grow the
district. We have several zones
without Zone Chairs and no 2 nd VDG
candidate. This district has many
people that will support, assist and
guide you. We have training in place.
The rewards are great. Please
consider serving your zone and
district in this way.
Next month we will report the
amounts given for Camp Winfield
and Camp STIX.
Lions Day at Camp Winfield will be
Sunday, Aug. 11 and Lions Day at
Camp STIX is Friday, July 19. More
details about both to follow. Thanks,
Laura

LIONESS NEWS
May has been a busy month. We had our Mother's Day luncheon on the 2nd of May. Our Mother's chest raffle
drawing was held and Mildred Welch was the winner. Through ticket sales of members and the community we
raised $1000.00 for our graduate scholarship fund. Our first meeting in May 4 new members joined the club. The
losing team, by a coin toss, of our membership drive fixed lunch for the whole group. Every one paid for lunch
and the winning team will decide where the funds will go. Members have been looking forward to the conference
for 19E in Spokane. Eight of our members attended and held the bake auction at lunch time on sat. We had 30
items for auction. Better than Sex cake, Apple Pie, cookies and even a bake it yourself item or two. Bob Ekler did
his usual fine job as auctioneer! People were very generous and through sales and donations, we will be giving
the two Diabetes camps, one in Canada and one in Newport, $900.00 each. Great Job everybody!! Those who
worked on the conference can take a big bow. It was very informative, interesting and fun. This month we also
gave the Priest River Library $100.00. We will have one meeting in June and then break for the summer. Jan
Wear, Sec. Priest River Lioness, cwearjc@hotmail.com
EARN $100.00 FOR YOU
AND YOUR CLUB!!
I am excited!! According to our
Monthly Membership Records
(MMR) that are recorded in Lions
Club International (LCI), we are a
plus 10 members for the month of
May. We are still at a minus 38 for
the Lions year, but I know we can
turn it around. Let’s use the words
“FINISH STRONG” for the rest of
the Lion’s year. I am asking each
Lion to invite a person to join your
club. Encourage your club to have an
“Invite a Friend” meeting. Put your
brochures out where the public can
see them. What can you do to bring
in new members? Let’s work
together to increase the number of
people in our district who serve our
communities. We have membership
chairs ready and willing to help you.
To encourage both individuals
and clubs, I am offering the
following:
I am personally going to give
$100.00 to the club in Canada and
the club in the US that brings in the
most members between April 1 and
June 30. I am also going to give
$100.00 to the individual member
in Canada and the individual member
in the US who brings in the most
members between April 1 and June
30. Be sure to have your secretary
turn in the clubs MMR so you get
credit.
NW Lions Foundation Health Screening Unit Returns
to Spokane
The NW Lions Foundation Health Screening Unit is scheduled to be in
the Spokane area providing health screenings Oct 21st through Nov 1st.
The screenings will be conducted for elementary children during the
week and the general public on the weekend.
After last year’s successful weeklong visit in which over 800 elementary
children were screened there is great excitement among school officials
for a return engagement. We were told by the District 81 Health
Coordinator that the screenings the Lions conducted were the best, most
complete screenings they had ever been experienced as well as the moist
accurate, saving the district many hours that were spent in re-testing the
children in the past.
This year we have scheduled the HSU (Health Screening Unit) for an
additional week to enable more children to be screened. We are targeting
children from schools from the Spokane Valley to the West Plains. Our
goal is to screen 2,000 children over the ten days we will be in the
schools!
What does this mean to you? Well, this means that if you want to have a
school in your club’s geographical area included in the screenings you
will need to begin working towards that goal today to get the ball rolling!
Not every school in the outlined area will be able to be included due to
time limitations so we will be accepting schools on a first come first
served basis once scheduling begins.
If you commit to scheduling a school in your area your club will be
responsible for recruiting volunteers to staff the HSU the day it is at your
school. In addition you will be responsible for participating financially by
raising funds to offset the $150.00 per day fee it costs us to host the HSU.
Therefore, now is the time to bring this unique service opportunity to
your club’s membership to secure their commitment and participation.
This is an outstanding way in which your club can serve your community
as well as raise awareness for Lions Clubs and your club in particular.
If you have questions or desire additional information about hosting the
HSU and when scheduling will begin, contact Lion Rick Kienholz,
Spokane North Lions Club, rick@nwya.org - 509-953-4461.
Leonard Parenteau
thamamom@hotmail.com
The year is ending with only the Priest River LEOS
being an active club. The Rathdrum LEOS tried but said
a renewed effort will take place for the coming year.
Interest has been showing in the Spokane area and let us
get together and start the ball rolling. Gather some Lions
and young people together this summer and let us all
meet to talk about a LEO Club. Maybe there may be
some activities in the community that we can be of help
and also get our young people involved. I will give all
the help and information I can.
The Priest River LEOS have completed most of their
planned activities with a fundraiser for Camp STIX and
helping the Priest Lake Kaniksu Coolin Branch Club
during their Spring Festival and collected $158 for the
Northwest Lions Foundation. It was great to be part of
their Festival. Donations have been and are being made
to the Animal Shelter, Food Bank, Women’s Shelter,
Leader Dogs, and other causes the members have
selected. An interesting and productive year with thanks
to the members and advisers.
Motorcycling for Leader Dogs
Trans-America Motorcycle Tour
June 15–July 8, 2013
Last summer, Lion Mark Mansell rode his bicycle
from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine for
Leader Dogs. With tremendous support from
across the country, he raised over $100,000.
This summer he will be joined by his wife,
Debbie, as they travel again on two wheels, but
this time with a motor added so they can cover
more ground in less time. Join the adventure as
they take on this challenge.
Go to the Leader Dogs for the Blind website,
http://www.leaderdog.org/cyclingforleaderdo
And visit Mark and Debbie on Facebook at
www.facebook.com/CyclingForLeaderDogs
to see the latest photos and updates on
preparations for their trip!
It’s amazing what a single Lion (and in this case,
his partner in service) can do to change lives.
You can change a life too – donate today!
FROM THE DESK OF YOUR ESTEEMED
DGE KEN COOK, ESQ
280-765-2538 kcook12@roadrunner.com
Well here we are in June just a few days left to add those
new members. If each club would bring one new
member DG Laura would meet the membership goal for
the year, we just need 39 new members
The Spring Conference was a good time, we saw many
friends we haven't seen in a long time. I thought that
Cheryl and Linda did a great job of putting it together.
Thanks for all the votes.
We are still looking for Zone Chairman for E-2, E-4,
E-5, E-8 and E-10. If anyone would like to do these
jobs please let me know. We have two Zones with
someone that would help.
We have a few clubs who have not reported their officers
to LCI for next year. You still need to send names if you
have the same officers. The same way with the MMR we
need these to know where we are in membership. If your
club is listed with more members than you have then you
pay for these members, so we need to get the right
number reported
I have started to put my visitation schedule together. I
will get it out to the Cabinet and Zone Chairs as soon as
possible.
We are off to Germany on the 30 th of June, school the
first five days, then the International Convention the next
4 days then seven days’ vacation. There will be 750
other DGE’s there also.
I can't wait to start my visitations to see how all the clubs
work in their communities. This is going to be a fun
year, SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS
Bis wir passend wieder, gut tag
It was wonderful having an opportunity to see old
friends and to make new ones. And it was inspiring
to hear reports about the many incredible projects
Lions in our District have completed. Y’all truly do
serve!
I want to take this opportunity to thank the Lions of
District 19E for their support in electing me Vice
District Governor for the 2013-2014 Lion Year. I
will provide all the support I can for District
Governor-Elect Ken Cook. I especially want to
thank District Governor Laura for the amazing
amount of time she donated and personal dedication
she displays to the Lions of District E.
(I still say that she must have a clone!)
Thank you for the opportunity to serve the clubs in
our District, and through them our many
communities!
CARE & LCIF
Several disasters have occurred in the U.S.
recently, tornadoes in Oklahoma and now in
Missouri. Many people are homeless and in
need for immediate help. Schools, hospitals
and homes have been leveled and 24 people
have lost their lives. Many clubs in both the
U.S. and Canada have been donating money
and relief supplies to the areas affected, much
more help is needed. Clubs as far away as
Florida, Virginia, Ontario and Prince Edward
Island have donated to help.
Please be generous in donating to assist
disaster relief and reconstruction of the affected
areas.
Tribute to our Lions who have passed away
Thank-you to the Spokane Southeast Lions Club for the
beautiful Celebration of Life Ceremony at the Conference.
Our wonderful Lions who have passed away were truly
honored.
Our condolences to the clubs and families
It is very important we honor those who have passed away,
but if secretaries are not filling reports, we don’t know.
Please help us by sending in names of those in your clubs
who have passed away.

Governor Laura Wintersteen-Arleth
It is with very mixed feelings I write my last newsletter entry as your District Governor. There are really not
enough words to express the most amazing year I have had as I have gotten to know the most amazing Lions,
Lioness and Leos in our district. In the over 25,000 miles Roger and I have driven since July 1 to visit your
clubs during official visits and during your activities, I have come to realize that we are a healthy district
because you truly serve in so many capacities. In each of the Lions, Lioness and Leo clubs, we have been met
with warmth, generosity, acceptance, great meals, and wonderful hospitality. We have been able to recognize
members of the clubs with DG Certificates of Appreciation because of the dedication they have to their
communities and Lions. You have generously given to both BC Lions Society, Camp Winfield and Camp
STIX, my 2 major projects. I have seen you in action and celebrated with you as you serve your communities
through pancake breakfasts, pumping gas for kids, serving beer, sponsoring Christmas Light tour for seniors,
sponsoring the Cork and Keg to raise money, recycling glasses, giving scholarships, playing BINGO,
sponsoring a variety show, hauling gravel, chopping wood, supplying backpacks for kids, supporting your food
banks, providing a park, building an ice rink, sponsored crab feeds and auctions, sponsoring the LHSU,
supported LCIF, Care, NW Lions Foundation for Sight and Hearing and the lists goes on and on. You have
each made me so proud to be a Lion and to serve as your District Governor. Lions are about serving and you
certainly have in so many ways. I often think and have said in meetings, where your communities would be
without Lions. Thank-you for the joy of inducting new members and installing your officers. This year was
full of accomplishments as a district. We conducted 2 Leadership 101 programs, had a club conduct a CEP,
brought the LHSU to multiple schools for screenings, have 25 new Certified Guiding Lions, we are working on
a new club, reports are getting in and I believe we will have a positive growth in membership by the end of
June. I want to challenge each and every one of you to go back to your communities and invite someone to join
your club. Share with them your love of serving and Lions. We can create many healthy Lions, but it starts
with one. I will truly treasure this year as one of the most remarkable ones in my life. I trust you will give Ken
and Kim all the support you have given me this year. Thank-you for loving and supporting Roger and I, and
creating a district of healthy Lions and for being a district where Lions, Lioness and Leos work together to
make a difference.
Danielle copied Outlaw Café menus into braille and donated
two copies. Owner Laura Lea Lagerquist showed them to VA
Hospital staff who reported only two other Spokane restaurants
have braille menus available.
The braille menus provide patrons independence to make
meal selections on their own. Laura Lea reported they have
already booked the banquet room for a group with sight
impaired members as a result of the braille menus.
Environmental Chair Report
Sandy Worley-Eberle
seberle44@msn.com
As my year as the Environmental Chair comes to an
end, I would like to thank DG Laura for giving me
the opportunity to work with her during her year as
our District Governor. I am especially proud of DG
Laura because my late husband, Rob Worley, was
her sponsor into Spokane Central Lions and was
responsible for getting Laura interested in Lionism
and in leadership. I know Rob would have been so
proud of Laura.
I would like to thank Lion Carole Williams of
Spokane Central Lions for the winning entry in the
Environmental Photo Contest. Keep in mind that
this contest is held every year so keep your camera
handy and get that perfect environmental photo for
next year.
This year has been a challenge for me as I found out
in October that I had Stage IV Breast Cancer which
spread to my bones. As I have been battling this
disease, I have had time to think about how the
environment may have a part in this disease. I have
read a lot of articles on this subject. Some suggest
that the air we breathe could be the cause while
other articles suggest that the water and plastics we
use are the cause. It all depends on the producer of
such articles. Environmentalists don’t even agree on
all the data out there. The oncologists don’t know
why cancer appears but the oncologists I have thinks
that the environment does play a role.
I am in 100% remission now because of the drugs
that have been researched and tested and made
available to the medical industry. But, I personally
feel that there is something in the environment that
causes cancer. What it is I don’t know. I think
everyone owes it to themselves to be vigilant about
their environment. Look at what you are eating,
look at what it is stored in, look at what was used to
make it, preserve it and contain it. Maybe one of
these days the scientists and researchers will find
answers. But for now I think it is up to individuals
to be aware of the environment around us and to try
to keep our lives as natural as possible.
New Officer - Reporting Forms
Please remember to fill out both the
PU101, which goes to LCI and PU19,
which goes to MD19. They have different
information which is needed by the different
offices.
“A SPECIAL NOTE”
From Your District 19-E Public Relations Chair
Hello Fellow Lions!
Once again, I would like to remind you to send your
Club’s Fundraising Event Info to me as soon as possible
for the months of June and July, 2013!! Naturally, as
your P.R. Chair, I am quite anxious to compile & send
out all your wonderful club news!
I would also like to pass some information on to you that
was recently pointed out to me:
Any fundraiser that we Lions do should have ‘a clear
reference as to where the money raised or received
will go’.
Now, this may sound simple, but please read on . . .
For instance, if your fundraiser is for Sight and Hearing,
go ahead and state that “we have (?) people in the
community that are in dire need of cataract surgeries and
(?) more who need hearing aids and eyeglasses.” Since
insurance doesn’t always cover everything, people will
understand the need for financial assistance.
Of course, no names are to be mentioned (privacy is
expected), however the community will see that we
“Lions” are there for our local friends and family, which
could inspire them to give GENEROUSLY to your
event!
So remember, if your event is geared toward children’s
programs, go ahead and list the program (or programs)
for whom the money is being raised. And if an event is
being created to raise money for medical expenses of a
local cancer patient or for any medical equipment, etc.
then go ahead and work closely in conjunction with the
specific family, clinic or hospital to raise the funds.
Believe me, your community WANTS to give; you just
have to let them know WHAT they are giving to!
Should you need a flyer made for your event, I am ready
and willing to create one for you. Should you have a
flyer already created, please pass it on to me.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
activities. Let’s share your success with
everyone. To all club secretaries and presidents: please
Nelson B.C. Lion Earle Cutler
Patti Patterson
Cutler became a Lion in 1945. He sports a Life Member badge
Rathdrum Lions Club
on his blue club vest. “The man I bought my business from
when we lived in Taber, Alberta was president of the Lions
NEW CLUB OFFICER TRAINING and one of the stipulations was that I had to join the club, and I
Club officer training has been set for most Zones for did. I’ve been a Lion ever since,” he says. Now in his early
the month of June. Club officers for the 2013-2014 90s, he has actually been a Lion longer than the Nelson club
Lions year need to attend one of these classes to be
has existed. “The experience has been nothing but the best,”
prepared for their year.
he says. “I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s very gratifying. We do a
lot of good things and it’s hard work at times.”
Cutler moved to Nelson in 1951 after buying the SS Nasookin
— retired a few years earlier as the Kootenay Lake ferry. “It
was down there by the Prestige and I was out here on holiday.
I saw it was up for bid, so I bid,” he says. “That was in July of
‘50. We arranged to have it looked after until we moved back
here in July of ‘51.”
He was no stranger to the area, having been born in Vernon,
and attended school in Trail from 1929 to 1941. Before buying
the old paddle wheeler, Cutler owned a jewelry store in Taber
where he did watch repairs. He landed there after serving in
the military.
“Serving my community is important,” he says. “That’s why I
joined the military and that’s why my work with the Lions is
important — different, but important. I think that’s what
makes Canada unique. We have a strong sense of community
and want to work to make the places we live great.”
“Most of what is printed regarding Lion Earle is about his 68
years as a Lion (he joined Lions on April 1st, 1945)” – Lion
Bill Brown, Nelson Lions Club.
