used to send diabetic children to camp to learn to
adjust their lifestyles to live healthier lives with
their diabetes.
Our total for the 2011-2012 Lion’s Year for our
District 22W Diabetes Programs was $36,499.50.
My sincere THANK YOU to each club and all the
Lions and Lionesses that supported our endeavors
to conquer diabetes during this past year.
DISTRICT 22-W TO PARTICIPATE IN THE
2012 NATIONAL MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY
PROGRAM
In concert with DG Paul’s slogan of “Together We
Will Make a Difference”, he is asking all
Lions/Lioness/LEO clubs to consider participating
in the largest national day of volunteering on
Saturday, October 27, 2012. The annual national
Make a Difference Day has been conducted at
various locations throughout the nation for more
than 20 years – this is our opportunity to join other
individuals and organizations as they reach out into
their communities to make a difference. Projects
can range from small to large – with impacts on an
individual or an entire community – and can be
coordinated by a single club, multiple clubs or
jointly by all clubs within a Zone or Region. Each
club is asked to designate a chairperson for this
effort by mid-July. If you have not already
received information on Make a Difference Day,
you will in the near future. The District
Coordinator, Lion Shirley Long (301-898-7004 or
slong95@comcast.net), and the Regional
Coordinators listed below are available to answer
questions or talk to your club about your potential
participation in the national 2012 Make a
Difference Day on October 27, 2012.
• Region I – Lion Sandy Youngblood (301-
463-3744 or sandyy1@verizon.net)
• Region II – Lion Nancy Itnyre (301-432-
8039)
• Region III – Lion Nancy Keller-Bonde (301-
371-5716 or mo_akbnthr@comcast.net)
• Region IV – Lion Linda Brady (410-848-
2235 or lionlinda.brady@comcast.net)
Let’s do what Lions/Lionesses/LEO's do so well –
partner with those in our communities to MAKE A
DIFFERENCE in the lives of others!
ALERT in a “NUTSHELL”
Lion Myron Horn
District 22W ALERT Coordinator
I have been asked to describe our District 22W
ALERT plan as simply as possible so our
Members know what to do when the sh** hits
the fan. This plan of action will be useful for
any disaster, whether natural or manmade
where two or more clubs are likely to be asked
to respond.
1. Lions, take care of your family first! Are
they in a safe place? Is anyone injured? Do
they have shelter, food, and water?
2. Lions, take care of your Club Members!
When a local incident occurs, use your internal
ALERT phone-tree to verify that all members
are accounted for. You can ask the same
questions you have asked your family.
3. Unless you are a trained first responder, or
suddenly find yourself at the scene of an
incident, do not respond directly to the scene of
the disaster. Our role is to respond as a
coordinated team, with the backing of the local
disaster relief organizations, the community,
and the governmental authorities. Volunteers
should be screened, trained, assigned a task and
location, and given a person to report to. All
volunteers should be logged in regarding their
duties, role, place of work, and hours of work.
Watch and listen to local TV,
radio announcements that may indicate where
volunteers are being screened.
Call your County Volunteer
Coordinator or Red Cross Response Team to
get this staging information. (You have been
working with them before the disaster
occurred, haven’t you?)
Call your Lions ALERT County
Coordinator that is listed in the District
ALERT POC for this information.
4. As the scope of the incident increases, more
Lions may need to get involved.
Local ALERT chairs should
contact nearby clubs and the ALERT County
Coordinator when requesting help.
County Coordinators should
make sure that all local clubs have been notified
and notify adjoining County Coordinators.
