DISTRICT 22W NEWS
Issue 1, 2012-2013 July 1, 2012
“Together We Will Make A Difference”
Congratulations to IPDG Steve Finger and the District 22W Lions for
meeting or exceeding all of the district’s goals and objectives for this
year. One of the premier goals was to have the clubs plant 1,750 trees.
The clubs responded with more than 6,000 tree plantings. We have
made our environment better, for us and for generations to come.
Way to go LIONS!
Jo Ann and I just returned from the Lions Clubs International
Convention in Busan, Korea (long trip), where incoming President
Wayne Madden outlined his goals for 2012/2013. His primary goal is
the Reading Action Plan (RAP), which is a campaign to improve
literacy rates and promote reading by: developing after-school reading
programs, reading to children at local libraries, donating books or
computers to local schools, volunteering as tutors through a local
school, or coming up with your own club’s plan. More than a billion
people worldwide and 23 million people in the USA are illiterate; which
means they cannot sign their name or read at a 10-year-old child’s
level.
One fun thing your club can do is to make a two-minute RAP video
and make it a joint venture with a LEO club. The video must be about
how to get children to read. Contest details are on the LCI website.
Membership is always a challenge and, fortunately, we are ending the
year just about where we started with the loss of only several members.
However, we cannot continue to lose members and remain a viable
organization. This is why participation in the Club Excellence Process
and the Mentoring Program are crucial to our success. I cannot
emphasize this enough, and ask each club to contact PCC John
Hopkins, GLT or PDG Och Ochoa, GMT and schedule your club for
these programs.
Has your club started planning for “Make a
Difference Day”, Saturday - October 27, 2012?
Contact Lion Shirley Long for information. (301-
898-7004 or slong95@comcast.net) Let’s make this
a memorable day in our communities!
We are beginning a new Lions year and the clubs
have new goals established, so as IP Wayne
Madden said, “Lions, start your engines!”
DG Paul Cannada
Words of Wisdom
“Knowledge is love and light and
vision."- Helen Keller
Can it be July and the start of a new Lions Year?
By the time you read this DG Paul will be home
from the convention and the three of us will be
ready to start the New Year.
Please, when you prepare your budgets or plan
your giving for this year, remember to include a
donation of some amount to all of the following:
LCIF, LVRF, Lions Youth Foundation, Leader
Dog, Kiss-a-Pig, Diabetes, White Cane and Vision
Days. It appears that some of the clubs have
stopped giving to some of these worthwhile
charities. Let’s join together and make it 100% of
the clubs donating to all of these items.
Don’t forget to check in on the District 22W
Facebook Page and the District 22W Web Page.
They are constantly changing and contain a lot of
information and important dates.
I hope to see you all at the Change of Banner and
the District 22W Social.
Have a GREAT YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lion Kent Eitemiller, 1VDG
Hello, Lions, Lionesses, and Leos… Thank you for
your confidence in electing me as your 2 nd Vice
District Governor. It was very humbling to be
elected unanimously. I am looking forward to
serving along with DG Paul and 1 st Vice District
Governor Kent. This will be an exciting year, and
we WILL have FUN!
Lions always rise to a challenge, as evidenced in the
past two years of raising funds for LeaderDog. I
am very proud to announce that we had 100
percent participation from the clubs in our district
this year!
Remember, we are all volunteers. It is my desire to
see our clubs grow in membership and continue to
nurture and value our fellow lions, because there is
power in numbers. One by one, as “WE SERVE,”
with our actions and deeds in our communities, our
clubs, the district, and internationally, “Together
We Will Make A Difference.”
Lion John Parker, 2VDG
2011 – 2012 DISTRICT 22W DIABETES
AWARENESS REPORT
Donna S. Jackson
District Diabetes Chairman
The Lions of District 22W are to be congratulated
for their support of the Diabetes Programs in our
District. I want to personally thank each club that
went the extra mile to make this year a huge
success in helping conquer diabetes.
The Frederick Diabetes Walk raised $2,286 which
all went to research to find a cure for this “killer”
disease. I did not get the reports as they went
directly to The American Diabetes Association, but
I know at least 5 clubs participated in the walk.
Our Kiss-A-Pig Contest raised $10,062 with 16
clubs supporting a candidate. Lion Tom Harney
from Taylorsville-Winfield Lions was the candidate
who got to kiss the nose of the pig. First runner up
was Lion Carol Ann Alphin of the Longmeadow
Lions Club. Thanks to each contestant who
worked to achieve our goal of $10,000. All money
from this event goes 100% to research.
Twenty-Seven Lions Clubs and two Lioness Clubs
contributed a total of $15,771.50 to our Camp
Merrick Scholarship Fund to send diabetic
children to camp to learn to live healthier and to
adapt their lifestyles to avoid the serious
consequences that diabetes can cause in their
bodies. Camp teaches them the proper way to test
and adjust their diets to prevent complications and
gives them moral support by being with other
children that face the same challenges that any
child afflicted with diabetes must face. Our Lions
are sending eleven children to camp in 2012, and
we had two others that cancelled their reservations
to attend for various reasons.
Ten Clubs in District 22W contributed $5,655 to
our Diabetes Awareness Fund which is used to help
diabetics in emergency situations or is sent to The
American Diabetes Association for research to help
find a cure for diabetes.
The Jackman Memorial Fund has $2,725. This
money is presently being held to accumulate funds
and will be added to periodically. Interest will be
4

used to send diabetic children to camp to learn to
adjust their lifestyles to live healthier lives with
their diabetes.
Our total for the 2011-2012 Lion’s Year for our
District 22W Diabetes Programs was $36,499.50.
My sincere THANK YOU to each club and all the
Lions and Lionesses that supported our endeavors
to conquer diabetes during this past year.
DISTRICT 22-W TO PARTICIPATE IN THE
2012 NATIONAL MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY
PROGRAM
In concert with DG Paul’s slogan of “Together We
Will Make a Difference”, he is asking all
Lions/Lioness/LEO clubs to consider participating
in the largest national day of volunteering on
Saturday, October 27, 2012. The annual national
Make a Difference Day has been conducted at
various locations throughout the nation for more
than 20 years – this is our opportunity to join other
individuals and organizations as they reach out into
their communities to make a difference. Projects
can range from small to large – with impacts on an
individual or an entire community – and can be
coordinated by a single club, multiple clubs or
jointly by all clubs within a Zone or Region. Each
club is asked to designate a chairperson for this
effort by mid-July. If you have not already
received information on Make a Difference Day,
you will in the near future. The District
Coordinator, Lion Shirley Long (301-898-7004 or
slong95@comcast.net), and the Regional
Coordinators listed below are available to answer
questions or talk to your club about your potential
participation in the national 2012 Make a
Difference Day on October 27, 2012.
• Region I – Lion Sandy Youngblood (301-
463-3744 or sandyy1@verizon.net)
• Region II – Lion Nancy Itnyre (301-432-
8039)
• Region III – Lion Nancy Keller-Bonde (301-
371-5716 or mo_akbnthr@comcast.net)
• Region IV – Lion Linda Brady (410-848-
2235 or lionlinda.brady@comcast.net)
Let’s do what Lions/Lionesses/LEO's do so well –
partner with those in our communities to MAKE A
DIFFERENCE in the lives of others!
ALERT in a “NUTSHELL”
Lion Myron Horn
District 22W ALERT Coordinator
I have been asked to describe our District 22W
ALERT plan as simply as possible so our
Members know what to do when the sh** hits
the fan. This plan of action will be useful for
any disaster, whether natural or manmade
where two or more clubs are likely to be asked
to respond.
1. Lions, take care of your family first! Are
they in a safe place? Is anyone injured? Do
they have shelter, food, and water?
2. Lions, take care of your Club Members!
When a local incident occurs, use your internal
ALERT phone-tree to verify that all members
are accounted for. You can ask the same
questions you have asked your family.
3. Unless you are a trained first responder, or
suddenly find yourself at the scene of an
incident, do not respond directly to the scene of
the disaster. Our role is to respond as a
coordinated team, with the backing of the local
disaster relief organizations, the community,
and the governmental authorities. Volunteers
should be screened, trained, assigned a task and
location, and given a person to report to. All
volunteers should be logged in regarding their
duties, role, place of work, and hours of work.
Watch and listen to local TV,
radio announcements that may indicate where
volunteers are being screened.
Call your County Volunteer
Coordinator or Red Cross Response Team to
get this staging information. (You have been
working with them before the disaster
occurred, haven’t you?)
Call your Lions ALERT County
Coordinator that is listed in the District
ALERT POC for this information.
4. As the scope of the incident increases, more
Lions may need to get involved.
Local ALERT chairs should
contact nearby clubs and the ALERT County
Coordinator when requesting help.
County Coordinators should
make sure that all local clubs have been notified
and notify adjoining County Coordinators.
5

If a full District response is likely
to be required, notify the District ALERT
Coordinator and District Governor.
5. If an LCIF Grant is required, the District
Governor must make the request. The District
Treasurer must arrange fund transfers and
track how funds are used. The District
Secretary will record the clubs involved, the
hours worked, and the services performed.
The District ALERT Coordinator will assist the
Secretary in completing an “After Action
Report”.
GLT District Coordinators:
New for this year is the “Emerging Lions
Leadership Institute”. This is an excellent
opportunity for those Lions who have not yet
held the office of Club President and have the
desire to take the first step in being involved in
Leadership. It is a chance to learn skills
required to be a successful leader at the club
level and to build on for leadership positions in
the future.
The “Emerging Lions Leadership Institute” for
the USA, and its affiliates, Bermuda and the
Bahamas, will be offered in Tampa, Florida on
September 17-20, 2012. We seek your assistance
to help recruit qualified Lion participants for the
institute. It is a valuable opportunity to build on
skills that enhance the leadership qualities at the
club level.
The institute in Tampa is designated as an
“Emerging Lions Leadership Institute” and is
targeted to Lions that have not yet been club
president.
Lions Clubs International will provide meals and
lodging according to the schedule of the institute.
Additionally, LCI will make appropriate hotel
reservations for each participant on a twin-share
basis. Please note that according to new board
policy, a non-refundable participation fee of
US$95.00 (or the equivalent in local currency) will
be required to offset these costs for all institutes.
This fee will be due no less than four weeks prior
to the institute start date. Participants are
responsible for all travel expenses to and from the
designated venue inclusive to all relevant ground
transportation charges.
Please help us to recruit qualified Lions for this
institute by providing a copy of the application
packet to Lions leaders in your district, including
your district governor’s team, region and zone
chairpersons, to remind them of this event.
Please ask them to promote the institute and
actively encourage qualified candidates to apply.
The success of this institute depends on the
participation of Lions leaders from across your
constitutional area. The application packet is
available on the website:
http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/membercenter/leadership-development/developmentprograms/emerging-leadership/index.php
We will be accepting seventy-five (75) Lions total
for three English-speaking classrooms.
Completed forms must be returned by July 18, 2012.
Please return applications to:
SPOTLIGHT
ON NEW
MEMBERS
OUR NEW DISTRICT 22-W LIONS
Welcome from all of us in District 22W!
It is a bittersweet moment for many of us who are
finishing our year of service in different capacities
in the Cabinet, and throughout our great District.
That, fellow Lions, is what Lionism is all about;
embracing new opportunities to serve our
communities directly and the world indirectly, by
accepting new and challenging positions in the
Cabinet, the District and our clubs, as we are
invited to do so by our new leaders. We hope that
when your turn comes to serve you will accept the
challenge and move forward in Lionism.
Our district has welcomed (178) new Lions since
July 2011. Remember that even though our clubs
have Membership Chairs, as our wise PDG Marion
Carmack always reminds us, “Each club member
is a Membership Chair” and it’s up to us to invite
our friends and neighbors to our meetings, so that
many more can experience what being a Lion is all
about. Offer your hands in service every
opportunity that you can.
EDUCATION CORNER
Start Planning for the New Year!
A great way to get a jump on membership growth
is to plan early. You can start planning now to hold
an Extension Workshop at the beginning of the
fiscal year. Starting your extension efforts early in
the year will help you build momentum and
excitement about forming new clubs in your
district. Work with your Zone Chair, GMT
Coordinators, and District teams to develop a plan
to grow membership.
Lions Clubs Code of Ethics
1. To show my faith in the worthiness of my
vocation, by industrious application to the end, that
I may merit a reputation for quality of service.
2. To seek success and to demand all fair
remuneration or profit as my just due, but to
accept no profit or success at the price of my own
self-respect lost, because of unfair advantage taken
or because of questionable acts on my part.
3. To remember that in building up my business it
is not necessary to tear down another’s - to be loyal
to my clients or customers and true to myself.
4. Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics
of my position or action towards my fellow men, to
resolve such doubt against myself.
5. To hold friendship as an end and not a means.
To hold that true fellowship exists, not on account
of the service performed by one to another, that
true friendship demands nothing, but accepts
service in the spirit in which it is given.
6. Always to bear in mind my obligations as a
citizen to my nation, my state, and my community,
and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word,
act, and deed. To give them freely of my time,
labor, and means.
7. To aid my fellow men by giving my sympathy to
those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my
substance to the needy.
8. To be careful with my criticism and liberal with
my praise; to build up and not destroy.
