“Together We Will Make A Difference”
“We Serve” is alive and well in District 22W. Lions are stepping up to
make a difference in their communities with a project on October 27,
2012 the national “Make a Difference Day” (MaDD). We all know
Lions are the leaders in volunteer service around the world and now
we will demonstrate that commitment in Western Maryland with
volunteer activities throughout the district. Our newest North Branch
Lions Club, which is scheduled for charter on October 12, 2012, is
already planning a MaDD activity in their community. These new
Lions can’t wait to get started. If your club needs assistance with
planning an event, please contact Lion Shirley Long, MaDD
Coordinator, 301-898-7004 or slong95@comcast.net. The Region
Coordinators are listed in the new roster books. There are nine more
weeks to plan and execute a volunteer project for MaDD if your club
hasn’t started yet.
The “Kiss a Pig” contest is less than eight weeks away. This year a
contest between President Lion Tom Harney of the
Taylorsville/Winfield Lions Club and Lion Carol Ann Alpin of the
Longmeadow Lions Club is sure to attract a lot of support for diabetes.
Lion Tom always raises a substantial amount for the diabetes cause
and this year has set a goal to raise $10,000. Lion Carol Ann Alpin has
participated in the “Kiss a Pig” contest for years and has come in
second many times. This year I am asking each club to contribute $200
(checks made out to District 22W) in Lion Carol Ann’s name for
Diabetes Awareness and mail your checks to Lion Donna Jackman. If
every club participates, Lion Carol Ann will raise more money than
Lion Tom and both will be extremely happy, and we will get to see Lion
Donna shed tears of joy. Isn’t that in itself worth $200?
When you club is planning its budget for the year, please consider a
generous donation to our Multiple District Foundations: Lions Vision
Research Foundation, Lions Saving Kids Sight and the Lions Youth
Foundation. These foundations were founded to assist the MD 22
1

community and it is up to the MD 22 clubs to
support them. The LVRF has been running in the
red for the last several years and is asking each
club to contribute $20 per member in order to meet
their budget needs. That’s a small amount per Lion
when compared to the number of people that have
their sight saved because of Lions support.
Visiting clubs around the district has been a
wonderful experience for me. I see Lion’s hearts
filled with pride as they talk about their club’s
service projects. Every club is unique and it is that
quality that makes everyone’s club special to them.
Recruiting new members will insure that tradition
lives on for future generations. Each club can make
that happen by having a net increase of just one
more member than the club had on July 1, 2012 by
the end of the Lion’s year (June 30, 2013).
Lions live “In a World of Service” and working
“Together We Will Make a Difference”.
DG Paul Cannada
Words of Wisdom
“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether
at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps
learning stays young. The greatest thing in
life is to keep your mind young.”
Henry Ford
I recently had the honor and privilege of attending
the Leader Dog School in Rochester, Michigan. In
attendance were all of the other First Vice DG’s
from MD-22 and approximately 50 other FVDG’s
from around the USA.
We learned about the Lion who rode his bicycle
from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine. His
goal was to raise $35,000 for Leader Dog. As of my
visit, the total raised from his ride was over
$86,000. Multiple District 22 was recognized as the
only Multiple District to have every club in every
district make a donation to Leader Dog. I
congratulate all of you for contributing to this
worthwhile organization.
I hope I can count on your support of our District
Leader Chair, Lion Dennis Youngblood, when we
have our Leader Dog Banquets in the Spring. We
want to achieve 100% club participation again this
year.
I hope to see many of you at the District 22W Social
to honor DG Paul Cannada and Lion Jo Ann; it
should be a fun evening. If I can be of any
assistance in any way, do not hesitate to contact me
by email or phone; my information is in the Roster.
Remember, “We Serve, because We Care”.
Lion Myron Horn
September is Emergency Preparedness Month. I
encourage all ALERT Chairs to schedule
something to support your Emergency Awareness
and Preparedness Programs.
Here are two ideas:
1. Join the Freedom District Lions Club at our
Business Meeting on 12 September. We will
be hosting two members of the MD
Emergency Management Agency (MEMA)
who will be telling us how Lions across the
State can be used to respond to a Disaster.
2. Obtain some FREE pamphlets and brochures
from FEMA 1-800-480-2520 and pass them out to
your community.
Looking for something fun and different to do?
Attend the CERT Rodeo at MEMA Headquarters
near Reisterstown on 6 OCT 12 starting at 0800.
Find out how long it would take you to splint a
broken leg or find a missing person in an
abandoned building.
Frostburg’s Bicentennial Celebration
Frostburg is celebrating their 200th birthday
the weekend of Sept 13th - 16th.
There is a parade on September 15th starting
at 10 am. The Frostburg Lions has slated a
spot in the parade and cordially invites all
current and past members to join us in this
celebration.
My motto this year is WOW! For those of you
who attended the LaVale White Cane Dinner
in April, I was the guest speaker and used the
word WOW repeatedly to describe the
awesome work of the Eye Bank and the Lions
in helping to restore my sight. So...WOW for
me means “World of Winners”!
Isn't it great to be a Lion?
Looking forward to seeing you in Frostburg on
September 15 th !
OCTOBER GROWTH AWARD PROGRAM
If you have been a Lion for a while, you probably
remember the October Growth Award Program
and its emphasis on membership recruiting in the
month of October. Did you know that many clubs
worldwide still recognize the program and continue
to recruit a majority of their members during
October?
GUESS WHAT?
6

Lion Club International is re-embracing the
October Growth Award Program. Join your fellow
Lions Clubs and make October a Banner Month
for New Member Activity.
HOW CAN MY CLUB OBTAIN THE OCTOBER
GROWTH AWARD?
All clubs participating in the October Membership
Growth Program will receive a Banner Patch as
well as name recognition in a section of the LCI
website. Clubs qualify for recognition in two steps-
-by adding members in October and then reporting
those members on their MMR or WMMR in
October.
Have a membership social, get new members, and
win the October Growth Award. If you have
questions as to how to have a Friendship Night
FREDRICK WALK & KISS-A-PIG
Diabetes Chairman, Donna S. Jackman
The Frederick Walk and Kiss-A-Pig will both be
held at Baker Park in Frederick on Sunday,
October 14. Registration will begin at noon for the
Walk. The Walk itself will take place at 1:30 P.M.
I would ask that each Lions Club that has a team
walking, to please let me know if you pre-registered
prior to the day of the event or if you are
registering that day. I would appreciate each club
participating in the Walk to make a list of your
team members and the amount each member got in
pledges. Last year we did not get credit for all the
Lions who walked, and I don’t want this to happen
again. This enables me to check and be sure we get
all the credit that each club should receive.
This year’s Kiss-A-Pig will be held following the
Walk and after everyone is served lunch. District
Governor Paul has asked Lion Tom Harney to
have all the other participants challenge him and
raise more money than Lion Tom for the honor of
kissing the nose of the pig. The candidate that
brings in the most money in donations will kiss the
pig’s nose. As always, the contestant with the least
amount of money will have the distinction of
kissing the pig’s back side. Our goal for this year is
$12,000. I know that with all the fabulous
contestants, we can do it!
Contestants for this year include Lion Carol Ann
Alphin of the Longmeadow Lions Club, Lion
Tanya Miller of the 4 County Lions Club, DG Paul
Cannada, 1 st VDG Kent Eitemiller, 2 nd VDG John
Parker, CS Susan Favorite, CT Brian Cox, Region
Chairman Gerry Beachy, Randy Weagley, Sue
Everhart and Bob Miller.
If your club has a candidate, please let me know
immediately so I can get his/her name published and
get support from other clubs. I have donations
7

coming in for this event, so I do encourage each club
or individual to select your candidate and send your
donation to me to show your support for the
candidate of your choice. All money raised from
these two events goes 100% to research to find a
cure for diabetes.
LVRF Aim for Sight
The LVRF Aim for Sight Sporting Clays Shoot at
Pintail Point in Queenstown and Mayberry Road in
Westminster will be held on Saturday, October
20th. Attached is a Shooter Sign-up sheet and a
request for Sponsors or Program Book Ads. Please
distribute the Shooter Sign-up in any location that
you think sportsmen or sportswomen may see it.
Also try to get a team, or an individual, to
participate.
It would be greatly appreciated if you or your club
would be a sponsor for this event (Station Sponsor
$100, Gold Sponsor $500, or Platinum Sponsor
$1,000). Another possibility is that you or your
Club put an Ad in the program Book at a cost of
$100 full page, $60 half page or $40 quarter page.
I don’t have to tell you that we need the money.
You are familiar with the numbers. We can
generate a good portion of our deficit if everyone
puts forth a big effort to get sponsors and shooters.
Please help make it happen.
Thank you for your support.
MOTORCYCLE RUN
Diabetes Chairman, Donna S. Jackman
The first “Motorcycle Run” will be held on
Saturday, October 20, in Smithsburg, MD. This is
being sponsored by St. Paul’s United Methodist
Church and the Lions of District 22W to raise
funds toward sending diabetic children to camp.
Registration will begin at 8:30 A.M. at the church
parking lot, located along South Main Street in
Smithsburg. The parking lot is located at the end
of one long block off Route 64 on the right side.
The ride will leave the parking lot at around 10:30
A.M. and should take approximately two hours
through the mountains surrounding Smithsburg,
where the trees should be in their autumn glory. At
the end of the ride, food will be provided for the
riders. Music will be provided by a variety of
groups for this event. We will have a raffle of items
and a 50/50 to help raise additional funds.
Cost of the ride is $20 for the cycle and driver with
an additional fee of $10.00 for a passenger riding.
Any rider who brings in a donation or $50 or more
will receive an event t-shirt. Additional t-shirts will
be available for sale to anybody wishing to make a
purchase.
We are hoping this will be a fun-filled day and
everyone will find something good to remember. St
Paul’s is hoping to make this an annual event to
support our Lions Clubs in sending diabetic
children to camp. These camps make a huge
difference in children’s lives and help them to live
more effectively with diabetes.
I want to thank all the Lions that have volunteered
their services to help with this day! It is a huge
undertaking, and we are a small church. I may
have to ask for volunteers to bring cake, cup-cakes
and cookies. We have not been able to find a
supplier for desserts as of this date. Unilever has
closed their Hagerstown Plant, which leaves us
without their support.
If you have questions, please call me at 301-790-
2036 or e-mail me at dsjlbj@verizon.net. Please
include “Motorcycle” in the subject line so that I
can open it immediately when I get your message!
Thanks from the bottom of my heart for all of your
support to-date; we can use lots of help to make
this event run smoothly!
Region I Golf Tournament
Region I Chair, Gerry Beachy
Here’s an opportunity to help raise funds for our
own Lions Vision Research Foundation at Johns
Hopkins Wilmer Eye Center. I was told that they
need funds to continue working toward finding
ways to improve the vision for severely vision-
8

impaired individuals. Here's your charge. Go out a
find a hole-sponsor and/or a team to play in our
tournament on Saturday, October 20th at
Maplehurst Country Club in Frostburg, MD. We
also need prize sponsors to reward the winning
teams for conquering the mountain course that I
have yet, in my (37) years of membership, to do.
Notice that we have kept the golfer fee low, $60,
which is a bargain when compared to other
tournaments in the area.
Thank you for taking up this challenge. With your
help we can raise $1,000, $2,000, or maybe even
more to help this worthy organization.
The Medical Eye Bank of Maryland
2012 marks the 50 th anniversary of the formation of
the Medical Eye Bank of Maryland
We’ve really grown since 1962! Here are some of
our historical highlights:
In the beginning… Today…
About 25 corneas were 871 corneas were
recovered per year
There was a 2 year
waiting list for corneas
There was a paper
donor card system for
registering to become a
donor
recovered in 2011
There is no waiting list –
scheduled elective
surgery
Anyone can become a
donor through the MVA
and the creation of the
Maryland Donate Life
registry
2 employees 7 full time employees
We were quickly
gaining experience as
an eye bank
Recovered eye tissue
needed to be
transplanted
immediately
We have grown into a
network of eye and tissue
banks, and have become
a world leader in eye
banking
Recovered eye tissue can
be transported and
stored for up to 14 days
before transplantation.
We have developed new
techniques for partial
thickness transplants and
a sterile cornea product.
For 50 years, The Medical Eye Bank of Maryland
has been proudly serving the members of all 22W
Lions and Lioness Clubs and our Maryland
communities with sight-restoring services. The
Lions and Lioness Clubs of 22W have been part of
the MEBM’s success since its inception. You have
helped us through supporting programs to educate
communities about becoming eye donors,
supporting White Cane collections and donations,
and contributing with annual club donations. With
your continued support, we can be well positioned
to meet future challenges like these:
• Compliance with FDA, state regulations and
medical standards for the eye bank
• Coordination of donor recovery statewide with
Maryland hospitals, the Medical Examiner’s
office, hospice programs, and funeral homes
• Coordination of donor programs with local
organ agencies
• Focusing on donor program growth while
keeping expenses at budgeted level; and
• Upgrade of equipment and programs, to
include:
• A replacement vehicle for donor recovery
(current vehicle has 134,000 miles)
• Information technology computer system;
and
10

• General lab and office space updates
The Medical Eye Bank of Maryland has been in
your community since 1962. With the partnership
of the Lions and Lioness Clubs of 22-W the
Medical Eye Bank of Maryland will meet these
challenges in the upcoming year and will continue
to serve your communities for decades to come.
WITH SYMPATHY
Hagerstown Lions Club: Lion Bob Hyssong’s
wife, Bettie, passed away on August 7th. Our club
conveys our sympathy to Lion Bob and his family.
11

Hagerstown Lions Club: The club extends our
sympathy to Lion Gordon Crabb on the passing of
his granddaughter.
Frederick Lions Club: The Lions Club of
Frederick is saddened to report that Lion Mark
Alexander passed away on August 1st. Lion "Hoss"
was an active member of the Finance Committee
and served as a co-chair of the club's “Barbara
Fritchie Classic Motorcycle Race” for many years.
His highlight as a Lions member came in 2006
when his son Scott was installed as President of the
club and in 2008 witnessing Scott's becoming a
Melvin Jones Fellow.
LaVale Lions: It is with sadness that the LaVale
Lions Club announces the passing of Lion James
'Jim' Walburn, on August 30 th .
LaVale Lionettes: It is with regret that we
announce the passing of LaVale Lionette Phyllis
Dorsey. Phyllis was the widow of LaVale Lion
PDG Joseph Dorsey (1971-72) and had been a
patient at the Goodwill Nursing & Rehab Center in
Grantsville, Md.
Lineboro-Manchester Lions Club: Lion Carol
Jean Hoover of the Lineboro-Manchester Lions
Club lost her sister, Grace, on August 2 nd .
Thurmont Lions Club: It is with much sorrow,
that the Thurmont Lions Club reports the passing
of Lion Lynn Stuart. Lion Lynn was the most
amazing individual that many of her club members
had the fortune to meet. She struggled for a
number of years with cancer BUT she never failed
to have a positive attitude and a smile on her face.
There was nothing that Lion Lynn couldn’t do. She
was an inspiration to all on how to live life and
make every minute of every day count. Lynn was
very active with the Thurmont Lions Club and was
a strong member of the 2012 “Make A Difference
Day” Committee. The Thurmont Middle School
LEO Club had a special place in Lynn’s heart – she
loved her “little LEOs”. She was a past recipient of
the TLC “Member of the Year” and a “Thurmont
Volunteer of the Year”.
Lion Lynn is survived by her husband, Thurmont
Lions Club’s President Tim Stuart, and a son,
Scott.
Lion President Tim also lost his mother (4) days
prior to Lion Lynn’s passing. Please keep Lion
Tim in your prayers at this most difficult time.
CHAPLAIN'S CORNER
Lion Rev. Dr. Joseph R. Foster Chaplain
"AT THE TIME OF A DEATH"
Most of us have had that empty feeling about
what to do or say when a friend or a neighbor
has a relative die. After over 40 years as a
minister, I still have times when I am at a
loss for a response.
But what I have found helpful is two-fold:
Perhaps the easiest and safest thing to say is
"I'm very sorry for your loss," or "I'm so
sorry." We don't know all the circumstances of
the death and so saying anything more may
be more hurtful than helpful. Too often we
want to soften the survivor(s) pain with words
like, "He/she is in a better place," "He/she
doesn't have to suffer anymore," etc. While we
may believe these words, they usually add little
relief to the family's pain.
Families tell me that providing little assistance
to them are the words people "always say."
What they remember most is the second
suggested response.
They remember who was there with them in
their time of need. Just "showing up" can be
the best thing one can do. Presence is powerful
therapy. In our rushed world, people don't
take the time as much anymore to genuinely
share time with the bereaved. Just letting them
talk is very therapeutic.
If you can't be there, send a hand-written
compassionate note or make a phone call.
Current practice might also include a carefully
written e-note.
12

Some practical things you might also want to
consider, depending on your relationship with
the family: offering a meal or providing a gift
card to a restaurant or grocery chain; offering
to "house-sit" during the viewing hours and/or
service; or offering child-care for parents of
smaller children. These seemingly small "gifts"
can mean the difference between stress and
solace.
But remember, if you offer to do something,
like offering your prayers, be sure to follow up;
they will be counting you.
Finally, the best advice I can offer is to be
genuine in your concern, whatever expression
it may take.
EDUCATION CORNER
There are seven categories of Lion membership
that can be found in the LCI Standard Club
Constitution and By-Laws. These different
categories of membership provide clubs with the
13

flexibility necessary to recruit and retain members
who have differing situations, yet desire to affiliate
with Lions Clubs International and make a
difference in their community.
Each month, the District Newsletter will be
reviewing one type of membership.
This month’s category is:
MEMBER-AT-LARGE: A member of this club,
who has moved from the community, or because of
health or other legitimate reason, is unable
regularly to attend club meetings and desires to
retain membership in this club, and upon whom
the board of directors of this club desires to confer
this status. This status shall be reviewed each six
months by the board of directors of this club. A
Member-at-Large shall not be eligible to hold office
or to vote in district or international meetings or
conventions, but shall pay such dues as the local
club may charge, which dues shall include district
and international dues.
