The above table summarizes the information contained in the NRs provided by state<br />

departments of agriculture for the period January 1, 2002 through December 31, 2004.<br />

The data for type of violation and number of violations per establishment were similar<br />

to those reported for federal inspected slaughter plants during the same period (see<br />

Section 5.1). However, the reporting of incidents by animal species differed between<br />

state and federal enforcement records. Cattle and pigs were reported to be involved in an<br />

approximately equal number of state humane slaughter incidents, while more cattle than<br />

pigs were involved in federal incidents.<br />
