Currently, 27 states (types 2 and 3 above combined) run their own meat inspection<br />

programs. These states operate their programs in cooperation with the FSIS, which<br />

provides up to 50 percent of the funding. 17 The states must provide enforcement<br />

requirements “at least equal to” those imposed under the Federal Meat Inspection Act 18<br />

and the Poultry Products Inspection Act 19 . Individual slaughter plants may apply to<br />
