2.5 Plant inspection authority<br />

The designated status of an individual slaughter plant as being either federal or state does<br />

not necessarily indicate what agency is responsible for conducting inspections, including<br />

those related to humane slaughter, as some federal plants are inspected by employees of<br />

state agricultural agencies and federal FSIS personnel inspect some state plants. Table 9<br />

lists the four types of U.S. slaughter plant inspection authority currently in existence and<br />

which states fall under each type.<br />
