maintain excellent quality and to offer the colorist precise control over
the entire color grading process, Grass Valley has developed Scream
4K/2K, a highly precise real time grain reducer—the only system
available on the market that can process 4K images at 6 frames per
second (fps) and 2K images in real time.
The rapid adoption of Digital Film Applications (DFA) in the postproduction
industry has revealed problems related to film grain coming
from different negative film stocks. This gets more and more apparent
especially when scenes from electronic acquisition are added. The
most common workflow in today’s post-production process involves
the transfer of film-based material into the digital domain by adding
appropriate grain reduction, performing the color grading process and,
after completing all further necessary post-production steps as sizing,
special effects, and others, record the final images back to film.
The new Scream 4K/2K grain and noise reducer is a unique system
designed specifically for high-resolution film data. It is capable of
processing data and images up to 2K resolution in real time and up
to 6 fps in 4K resolution. The plug-in board design fits perfectly into
the Spirit 4K or Spirit 2K rack design and all existing machines can be
retrofitted in the field with this new option.
A unique property of this plug-in board is the ability for channels to
be weighted for the film stock being used. Individual films stocks have

different granularity characteristics within their different dye layers and
require a relative weighting of the amount of grain reduction applied
to each channel. The Scream 4K/2K has popular film stocks preprogrammed
into its system so that one overall adjustment will move
the ganged grain reduction level to achieve the desired result.
With the introduction of Scream 4K/2K, grain and noise reduction is no
longer the task of an external format-dependant device, but is now an
embedded, fully integrated part of the Spirit 4K or Spirit 2K RGB signal
flow and machine architecture.
Scream 4K/2K control settings are simple and intuitive, including splitscreen
capabilities, all through the Grass Valley Graphical Control panel
(GCP). Additionally, it can also be directly controlled from many major
third-party controllers.
The processing algorithms of Scream 4K/2K are based on the
successful algorithms of the original Scream Grain Reduction Software.
Scream 4K/2K plug-in board is a further advance in image control, as
well as providing resolution independence for digital film applications.
