The complete ASM package consist of two key elements :
a) ASM-Agent
This is a non-stop program that collects information about the server - not only basic
data but also system health status - and transmits it to the ASM station.
b) ASM-Station
A Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT or Windows 2000 workstation-
based ASM-Station can be installed in any network. Communication with
the ASM-Agent is carried out through industry-standard Simple Network Mana-
gement Protocol (SNMP), supporting any agents running under Windows ® NT
and Windows ® 2000 server, Novell NetWare and Caldera (SCO) Unix.
From this workstation, system administrators can define network, query server
operations, set threshold levels, and locate potential problems.
• Fault Management
The ASM-Station’s fault management interface defines the actions required
when user-defined or pre-set threshold values are exceeded, or when hardware
errors are detected by the special ASM hardware circuitry.
• System Alert Manager
This is a utility that runs in the background of the ASM Console system every
time it boots up. It actively monitors the systems in the network for faults and
malfunctions, warning the administrator if and when they occur.
• Event Logging
The ASM-Station keeps a record of each event that occurs in the networked
systems. Errors or faults during the event are also registered in this file. A viewer
allows the administrator to see all the events logged.

Performance Management
The ASM-Station allows the system administrator to check and set performance
criteria for each server on the network, issuing an alarm when pre-set thresholds
are reached, thus enabling the administrator to deal with the problem before it
becomes critical.
The monitored performance data includes:
• Basic system information on the system itself, mainboard, BIOS, memory, and
system administrator.
• DMI information which includes DMI bios, mainboard, processor, memory, cache,
slot, connector, and onboard device.
• I/O information on devices such as serial ports, PS2 mouse, parallel port, and
the video card of the monitored server.
• Information on storage devices hard disks, CD-ROM, and floppy disk.
• Information on NIC devices.
• Health information of IPMI-supported devices such as sensors (CPU voltage and temperature,
system voltage, fan, chassis and RDM status), and System Event Log (SEL).
• Information on all the resources of the server machine, including IRQ, DMA,
I/O port, and memory address.
• Information on CPU performance (up to 4 CPU’s).
• Memory utilisation information (threshold setting may also be changed from
the ASM Console).
• File system utilisation (threshold setting may also be changed from the ASM

• Disk utilisation information, including disk efficiency and performance, of SCO
Open Server and Windows NT/2000 (only).
• Network Interface Card (NIC) information which includes data transmission
and utilisation.

NT services, and environment variables.
Configuration Management
Through the use of sophisticated hardware and software interfaces, Acer’s Advanced
Server Manager Pro collects and displays the details about each server’s
hardware, software and BIOS configuration, including:
• System information - details the specific Acer server model, name and
location, operating system and version, number of logged-on users, network
address and drivers currently in use.
• System configuration - Includes details of hardware and BIOS levels,
processor type, I/O slots and devices, memory layout, interrupt use, DMA channel
assignments and CPU cache.
• I/O devices - Specifies input/output devices and their connections to the server,
in addition to keyboard and video adapters and serial and parallel I/O ports.
• Storage information - Lists each fixed disk attached to the server, including
the controller model and type, as well as each disk drive model, type and size.
• Network Interface card information - Lists each network interface card installed
in the server along with the type, model, slot where it is installed, the
assigned interrupt, I/O port and base memory address.
Security
The ASM Pro has a built in security subsystem that prevents inadvertent or
malicious use of the ASM-Pro facilities. Password security on both ASM-Station
and ASM-Agent blocks access to and modification of critical server data to
unauthorised system personnel.

WebASM
WebASM takes system management a stage further
by providing Web-based SNMP server management
tools to monitor Acer Altos server systems with the
ASM Pro Agent installed. This allows system administrators
to monitor and manage system performance
and monitor status from a remote console through a web browser via an Internet
or Intranet environment, thus broadening the scope of system management and
monitoring access across a network.
Remote Diagnostic Manager
The Remote Diagnostic Manager and its companion product, Advance Server
Manager Pro, provide all the tools you need to monitor the health of your server,
also remotely.
RDM consists of five major components: the RDM hardware module, software
driver, server BIOS, hidden partition and the RDM-Station software. These components
combine to provide a rapid recovery system overcoming the distance
barriers between the central computing site and its distributed servers. If a server
fails, the RDM module provides the connection between hardware and software
to monitor server operation and begin the notification process.
The RDM can assist in diagnosing problems and restoring the server to operation
in all but the most severe failures.

Acer EasyBuild provides a fast, intelligent and simplified way to install and

GUI is extremely user friendly and the installation procedure is a matter of a

with a software manager which can be run on a Windows workstation in order

performance of 4-way system architecture design, powered by up to 4 of
Intel’s ® Pentium ® III Xeon ® processors at speeds of up to 1.0GHz (and above, in
line with forthcoming Intel ® releases).
A 4-way interleave memory subsystem provides critical data with exceptionally
efficient access to the Altos 22000's high-speed SDRAM, deployed across 16
DIMM slots, supporting a massive 16GB (max.) of memory. The scalability and
expandability demanded by modern e-business operations is amply provided by
the Altos 22000’s eight hot-pluggable HDD bays and a total of eight available
PCI slots, in new-generation capable 64-bit/66MHz, thanks to integrated VGA
and LAN, and Ultra160 SCSI controllers.

Sky-high Availability Keeps Enterprise on its Feet
The Altos 22000 provides outstanding availability, too, providing enterprises with
all that power and performance for the maximum uptime. ChipKill memory, built
right into the Altos 22000's architecture, offers significantly increased security to
critical operations, going beyond the single-bit localised error protection of ECC,
eliminating costly uptime interruption from memory path errors. Hardware device
failure repairs are possible without affecting uptime, thanks to the four state-of-the-art
hot-pluggable PCI slots of the Altos 22000. PCI devices can be
removed, repaired, and replaced without ever powering down. Equipped with
up to three load balancing, hot-pluggable, redundant power supplies, the Altos
22000 comes as close to eliminating power problems as enterprises can get,
and the hot-pluggable, redundant cooling fan modules keep things cool when
the activity heats up.
The Altos 22000 offers outstanding storage as well. Eight hot-pluggable Ultra160/Ultra2
SCSI hard disk bays carrying pre-failure analysis, accommodating
1” and 1.6” SCSI HDDs, at both 7,200 and 10,000 RPM speeds, support critical
business with a maximum 291.2GB of hot-pluggable storage.

ChipKill makes it safe
Permanent data loss from memory chip failure carries the threat of untold
system damage. The ability to provide protection from multi-bit errors has, traditionally,
only been available within the mainframe environment. As more and
more commercial environments implement PC servers in areas formerly occupied
by mainframe-scale systems, however, the need for enhanced memory protection
has become increasingly critical.
ChipKill technology protects the Altos 22000 from single memory chip failure,
as well as multi-bit errors. Additionally, while Chipkill technology has previously
only been available on specially designed DIMM modules themselves, the Altos
