1. SCOPE<br />

SPECIFICATION FOR CONTINUOUS CAST SILVER BEARING COPPER WIRE<br />
1.1. This specification covers the requirements of continuous cast silver bearing copper wire<br />
rods of 19.1mm to21.5mm diameter for the manufacture of hard drawn grooved<br />
silver bearing copper contact wire of various sizes to be used on Indian Railways as<br />
given in table-3 of specification No. TI/SPC/OHE/CW(Cu-Ag)/0100(07/2010).The<br />
CCSB Copper wire rod shall be manufactured by Southwire process.<br />
2. GOVERNING SPECIFICATION<br />
2.1. In the preparation of this specification assistance has been taken from the following<br />
standards and specification.<br />
2.1.1. IS: 191(pt-v)-1980 Specification for Copper.<br />
2.1.2. IS: 9713-1983 Specification for hot rolled electrolytic copper wire<br />
rods for electrical conductors.<br />
2.1.3. IS: 440-1964 Methods of Chemical analysis of Copper.<br />
2.1.4. IS: 1608-1995 or latest Mechanical testing of Metals..<br />
3. MATERIAL<br />
3.1. The material of continuous cast silver bearing copper wire rods when analysed in<br />
accordance with IS:440-1964, “Methods of Chemical Analysis of Copper:, shall meet the<br />
requirements specified in the IS:191(Pt-V)-1980, “Specification of Copper”. The oxygen<br />
content of the wire rod shall not exceed 0.03%. The oxygen content shall be determined in<br />
accordance with IS: 440-1964, or by any other method with the prior approval of<br />
Purchaser.<br />
4. FREEDOM FROM DEFECTS<br />
4.1. The surface of continues cast copper wire shall be fairly smooth, free from inclusions or<br />
foregin particles, indentation, surface defects, twists, entanglements etc.<br />

5. TESTS<br />
5.1. All the test specifications shall be carried out at manufacturer’s Works. The manufacturer<br />
shall arrange all the necessary machinery, apparatus, labour assistance etc. required for<br />
conducting these tests without making any claim on the Purchaser. The tests for which the<br />
facilities are not available at manufacturer’s Works may be carried out at any other reputed<br />
Laboratory with the prior approval of the purchaser<br />
5.2. Acceptance Tests:-<br />
The following tests shall be carried out on the number of wire rods selected from the lot:-<br />
(i) Visual Examination (Clause 6.1)<br />
(ii) Measurement of dimensions (Clause 6.2)<br />
(iii) Compression test (Clause 6.3)<br />
(iv) Tensile strength / elongation test (Clause 6.4)<br />
(v) Chemical Composition (Clause 6.5)<br />
(vi) Microstructure examination (Clause 6.6)<br />
(vii) Electrical resistivity test (clause 6.7)<br />
5.3. Sampling and criteria for conformity:<br />
5.3.1. Sampling and criteria for conformity shall be in accordance with Clause-9 of<br />
IS: 9713-1983.<br />
6. METHOD <strong>OF</strong> TESTS<br />
6.1. Visual Examination:<br />
The rods shall be visually examined for defects mentioned in Clause-4 of this specification.<br />
The rod shall be free from defects.<br />
6.2. Measurements of Dimensions:<br />
Discard approximately 2.5 metres length from the end of the coil. Three measurements at 60°<br />
angular displacement shall be made around the circumference at two places 4 metres apart. An<br />
average of six readings shall be considered as the diameter of the wire<br />
rod. The diameter shall be as specified in table-3 of specification No.<br />
TI/SPC/OHE/CW(Cu-Ag)/0100(07/2010).<br />

6.3. Compression test:<br />
A sample from the coil length twice the diameter of the wire rod shall be cut and then<br />
compressed till its length becomes half the original length. Curved surface, after test, shall not<br />
show any crack or defect on visual check.<br />
6.4. Tensile strength/ elongation test:<br />
When tested in accordance with IS:1608-1995 or latest, “Mechanical Testing of Metals” for<br />
tensile strength and elongation , the material shall have a tensile strength of 20.4 kgf /mm 2<br />
(min.) and a minimum of 46% elongation on a gauge length of 250mm.<br />
6.5 Chemical Composition:<br />
The material shall have the chemical composition as given in TABLE-2 of RDSO<br />
specification No. TI/SPC/OHE/CW(Cu-Ag)/0100(07/2010). The trace elements shall be<br />
determined by spectrometric method. The copper shall be determined in accordance<br />
with IS: 440-1964. For oxygen content, certificate from manufacturer of CCSBC wire<br />
rod shall be furnished.<br />
6.5.1 The oxygen content of the material shall be less than 300 ppm.<br />
6.6 Microstructure examination:-<br />
The sample of wire rod cut along transverse section polished and etched shall show<br />
equiaxed re-crystallized fine grains having grain size finer than ASTM-5. The presence<br />
of cast columnar grains in the microstructure shall not be permitted.<br />
6.7: Electrical Resistivity test:-<br />
Electrical Resistivity of CCSBC wire rod shall be determined in accordance with IS:613-<br />
2000.Resistivity shall not be greater than 0.01737 ohm mm 2 /m at 20°C.<br />
7. PACKING:-<br />
7.1. The material shall be supplied in coils strapped with loops or as required by the Purchaser.<br />

8. MARKING:-<br />

Suitable tags with markings made on them shall be provided with each coil and shall carry the<br />
following information:<br />
(i) Name and trade mark of the manufacturer;<br />
(ii) Size of wire rod, weight and length of coil;<br />
(iii) Lot Number<br />
(iv) Date of Manufacturing<br />
(v) Purchase order number and name of consignee;<br />
(vi) Date of inspection and inspecting authority;<br />
(vii) Any other information required by the Purchaser<br />
The name of the manufacturer and month and year of manufacture shall be provided on the<br />
wire rod at regular intervals ant exceeding 10 metres to facilitate easy identification<br />
