crack.” 147 Most sensationally, Hartogs claimed that he “sensed a deep anger stirring far
beneath the surface. I thought to myself, this boy is choked with silent rage.” 148 As the
Warren Commission report pointed out Hartogs did not diagnose Oswald as having a
“strongly paranoid outlook.” As mentioned previously, Hartogs wrote in his report that
Lee had a “personality pattern disturbance with schizoid features and passive-aggressive
tendencies” -- psychological jargon that is less catchy than “choked with silent rage.”
Hartotgs’ report also stated that “No finding of neurological impairment or psychotic
mental changes could be made.” 149
In his book, Hartogs described his testimony to the Warren Commission, and
made a slight adjustment to his findings. He said he was asked “what particular thing
about Oswald” made Hartogs conclude that Oswald had “a severe personality
disturbance.” 150 Of course, Hartogs’ report from his examination said simply
“personality disturbance,” not “severe personality disturbance.”
The accuracy of Hartogs’ recollection of his brief examination of Oswald is
impeached by an unlikely source, Warren Commission counsel David Belin. In
November 22, 1963: You Are the Jury, Belin quoted Hartogs’ testimony that Oswald “had
a potential for explosive, aggressive, assaultive acting out” - even though the
