Buchanan alleged that the identification of Oswald as a Marxist and Soviet
defector brought nothing but opprobrium to the far left. He asked, “Why would any
Communist or person of pro-Communist opinions act as though he were an anti-
Communist?” 558 Buchanan’s answer was that Oswald was no leftist, but was in fact an
agent of the CIA and FBI. He claimed that it is clear Oswald went to Moscow on orders
from U.S. intelligence because “he was never prosecuted for the serious offense of
having compromised the secret codes of the Marine Corps.” 559 The author stated that
while “Oswald does not seem to have been one of the C.I.A.’s more successful agents,”
he also “does not seem to have been one of their more highly paid ones either.” 560
Buchanan also added that it was “beyond discussion” that Oswald was a “double agent in
New Orleans” 561 Unlike a true leftist, according to Buchanan, Oswald did not associate
himself with downtrodden blacks in the South, but was usually in company with those on
