→ More than 15 million books sold since the
series’ start
→ The Three ??? cult enthralls old and new fans
→ Backstory:
Originally titled The Three Investigators, the series was created
by journalist and author Robert Arthur in the early 1960s and
published by Random House. After Robert Arthur‘s death, the
series was continued by an entire team of authors but drew only
a small fan base, which led to its discontinuation in the United
States in 1987. It turned out more successful in Germany where
more than 150 volumes have been published by Kosmos since
1993. These are based on Arthur‘s concept but have mainly been
written by German authors.
→ The characters:
The Three ??? Justus Jonas, Bob Andrews und Peter Shaw live in
fictitious Rocky Beach, CA. The three young friends established
a detective club and solve their cases with a great deal of intelligence,
humor and instinct. The three investigators are united
by a close friendship and their joint interest in solving criminal
cases.
→ The adventures:
The stories of the three detectives stand for consistent quality
and educationally invaluable children‘s literature. Their cases
involve criminology topics, seemingly supernatural phenomena
and spooky adventures. The Three ??? is safe for children
and does not contain brutality or bloody scenes. There are no
fantastic endings; the claim to reality is adapted to the target
group‘s level of understanding.
Finally – from their secret
series. He lives with his wife
The authors Megan and
Megan works as editor-inchief,
photographer and
author of several children‘s
and teen book series. Her
husband is a fi lm producer
and also writes successful
children‘s literature.
Gayle Lynds has written
three The Three ??? books,
which were published
between 1989 and 1990
under her pseudonym
G. H. Stone. She is a bestselling
author and wife of
the late The Three ???
author Denis Lynds (William
Arden), who died in 2005.
→ This season, we present three titles by famous
American authors, which have not yet been
published
→ Brainwash (Peter Lerangis, 1989):
When two of their friends go missing, The Three ??? suspect
the SynRea sect to have something to do with it. In order to
bring back the missing persons, the detectives fly to New
York and join the sect in an undercover operation. However,
the recovery mission seems to turn into an unsolvable task.
→ High Strung (Megan and William Stine, 1989):
Justus is trying to win $5,000 at a radio show for which he
has to solve a riddle and find one object every day. All of a
sudden, someone breaks into the junk yard. That person is
obviously trying to steal the objects Justus has collected.
But who is it? Together, The Three ??? start searching for the
thief …
→ House of Horrors (Gayle Lynds, 1986):
A series of mysterious events takes place at the amusement
park‘s haunted house ride. Horrible screams can be heard
which are definitely not a part of the program. In collaboration
with Justus, Peter and Bob, the reader has to solve
the mystery as quickly as possible. But watch out: Make the
wrong choice and everyone will be lost forever! It is possible
they find their way through the haunted house – or not.
Since 1999, The Three ??? Kids is targeting an audience
considerably younger than The Three ???‘s fan base. The
stories are more appropriate for younger children and
narrated in a less complex manner. Moreover, the 10-year old
detectives are signifi cantly younger than the boys in the
original series. In a playful and mostly unintentional way,
the three main characters get involved in exciting cases,
using their brains and humor to solve them. Since extraordinary
powers are not required, the kids are able to succeed on
their own. Similar to The Three ???, there is no brutality in
the stories. Dangerous situations do not cross the line of
what is educationally justifi able.
The series is aimed at young readers age ages ge g s 8 to t to 10 110
important, which one misleads?
The series with The Three ??? Kids for deciding yourself: From
the tried and true ingredients – an exciting case and three
shrewd detectives from Rocky Beach – the reader can assemble
his own story. Because: he or she must decide which plot
strand to follow, and these decisions determine whether and
how the case is solved.
At each important turning point in the mystery‘s action
(every 1-3 pages), the reader is confronted with two possible
alternatives and the selection decides how and where the
story continues. Accordingly many stories and various logical
conclusions are possible. Not all paths lead to a solution in
the case. Many a supposedly hot clue ends in a stinky barrel of
fi sh, another clue turns Rocky Beach in a Dorado of gangsters
The Three !!! is a classic detective series for girls age 10 and up
and thus a mirror of the series The Three ???. Kim, Franziska
and Marie are three hobby detectives from an unnamed city.
Playfully, the three girls get mixed up in fascinating cases
they solve with intelligence, courage, and humor.
In their cases The Three !!! deal with all criminology topics,
with apparently supernatural phenomena and also with
spooky stories. To solve their cases they do not require unusual
skills. Dangerous situations do not exceed the boundaries
of educationally justifiable stories. All cases are bloodless
and free of brutality.
The brand The Three !!! is timelessly modern. The stories take
place in the immediate present. The focus is the three girls‘
friendship. They trust each other one hundred percent and
can depend on each other. Team spirit is in demand.
Their world is mostly familiar to the reader. The reader can
quickly orient herself in each volume. Most cases take place
in The Three !!!‘s hometown, only during vacations do the
three detectives travel – under adult supervision – within
Germany or Europe. The volumes are not based on each other.
→ Likable and powerful protagonists gain a
solid position in soccer as a male domain
The center of this trilogy unique in its subject matter are
fascinating stories about a girls‘ soccer team. Even though a
soccer team normally consists of eleven players, the books
focus on four girls and their development.
The friends have to prevail in an environment in which they
have to fi ght hard for being taken seriously. The stories are
about respect, conquering a presumably male domain, about
loyalty and rivalry. They also tell of everyday life issues
such as friendships, fi rst love, jealousy, stress at school and
domestic confl icts. The protagonists age during the course of
the trilogy and live through different phases of puberty. The
reader gets a chance to grow up together with the girls.
