FARMERS DIGGING PEANUTS!
Just in time for the harvest
season, the Alabama
Peanut Producers Association
(APPA) has launched a billboard
campaign promoting
the health benefits of peanuts.
The billboards read:
"Farmers are digging the
peanuts. People are digging
the protein." The signs have
been placed in two prominent
peanut-growing regions of the
state - Dothan and Mobile,
and are in high-traffic areas.
The project is being funded
by the National Peanut
Board and coordinated by
APPA staff. "This is a great
example of how growers can
share their nutritious message
to thousands of motorists on
a daily basis, while they themselves
are in high gear harvesting
this year's peanut crop,"
said Randy Griggs, APPA
executive director.
Dothan area billboards
are located on Highway 231 S,
431 N, and 84 W near
Brannon Stand Road. Since
approximately half of the
peanuts grown in the United
States are grown within a 100mile
radius of Dothan, these
are quite appropriate locations
for this promotion.
The Mobile billboard is
on I-10 E near the Loxley-
Hwy 59 exit. When approaching
one of the billboard
vicinities, look for the sign
that promotes a vital commodity
to Alabama and our
nation…..Peanuts: Energy for
the good life!
Consumers can take part
in the National Peanut Festival,
the nation's largest peanut festival,
which will be held in
Dothan, October 29-November
7, 2010 to honor peanut
growers and celebrate the harvest
season. For more information
Peanut Festival please, log onto
Alabama Pecan Festival
The annual Alabama
Pecan Festival
will take place November
5-7, 2010, at
the Tillman's Corner
Community Center in
Theodore. This annual
event has provided
family fun for many
years with crafts, food
vendors, and carnival
rides. A variety of
entertainment will be
provided each evening
of the festival. For
more information,
As our farmers enter the
harvest season, I would like to
announce that the United
States Department of Agriculture
(USDA) has approved disaster
assistance for 2009 for
farmers and producers across
the United States. The disaster
assistance will include a Crop
Assistance Program, a Lost
Poultry Contract Assistance
Program, and an Aquaculture
Grant Program.
Alabama's producers have
been long awaiting this assistance.
Although these grants
will not relieve them of total
losses for 2009, it is certainly
needed and appreciated. Sixtysix
of the state's 67 counties are
a part of this program, which
illustrates clearly that we had a
widespread problem here in
2009. I hope this funding will
go a long way to helping them
continue to be successful in
their industries
The Crop Assistance
Program will provide up to $550
million for these eligible commodities:
upland cotton, rice,
soybeans, and sweet potatoes.
The Lost Poultry Contract
Assistance Program will provide
up to $60 million in the form of
a grant to those states where
poultry producers lost a contract
SPARKS’
REMARKS
Commissioner
Ron Sparks
due to the bankruptcy of an
integrator in December 2008.
The Aquaculture Grant
Program will provide up to $20
million in the form of a grant
to those states where farmraised
aquaculture producers
need assistance due to high
feed input costs in 2009. The
portion of these funds allocated
to Alabama aquaculture producers
is estimated to be less
than $4 million.
All Alabama counties are eligible
for these programs except
for Coosa County. Details about
the requirements for producer
qualifications and funds distribution
are expected from USDA in
the coming weeks. Our department
will be working jointly with
USDA to administer the Lost
Poultry Contract Assistance
Program and the Aquaculture
Grant Program.
grasses which are hosts for fall
armyworm are Bahia grass,
Pearl Millet, Sorghum-Sudan
Hybrids, tall Fescue, and various
winter annuals including Ryegrass,
Rye, Wheat, and Oats.
More than 60 plants have been
reported as hosts of the fall
armyworm, including Corn,
truding from the soil surface.
Brown patches appear in the
field and can rapidly increase
in size. Established, healthy,
Bermuda grass is rarely killed by
fall armyworms, but the complete
defoliation caused by a
severe infestation weakens
plants and deprives livestock of
infestations before they cause
economic damage. An easily
detectable sign of armyworms
is the presence of flocks of
age begin to come in during late
July or early August. First
reports are usually from southern
Alabama. There are three or
more generations of fall armyworms
each year. Occasionally,
severe outbreaks occur as early
as mid-April.
Fall armyworms are susceptible
to cold, and are unable to
survive even the mildest winters
in Alabama. Each year, fall armyworm
moths, carried by air currents,
make their way from
uation. Seedlings of these fallseeded
plants are small when
populations of fall armyworm
are at seasonal highs. These
crops can be severely stunted or
killed if fall armyworms feed
too far down on these plants.
Fall armyworm damage is
most likely to occur from
August through October when
populations are at seasonal
highs. Natural enemies of the
armyworm are less effective
during drought years. Damage
lets of frass (larval excrement)
about the size of Bahia grass
seeds. If available, use an insect
net to "sweep" the grass in early
morning or late afternoon to
check for the presence of young
fall armyworms. In fields wet
with dew, you can find caterpillars
stuck on tires of vehicles
that have been driven through
an infested field.
The decision to treat for fall
armyworms depends on the
stage of the armyworms and the
PIGWEED IN ALABAMA
USDA-Natural Resources
Conservation Service (NRCS)
State Conservationist Dr.
William Puckett recently
announced an initiative under
the Environmental Quality
Incentives Program (EQIP)
designed to help agricultural
producers control Palmer amaranth,
a species of Pigweed.
Palmer amaranth has devel-
oped resistance to glyphosate
and can quickly spread from a
few plants into a major infestation
if not quickly controlled.
Puckett said, "A major concern
is the loss of conservation
tillage acreage as producers
revert to tillage to control this
weed. In this initiative, we
encourage the use of conservation
tillage methods, integrated
pest management principles
and diversification of herbicide
chemistries. We have allocated
special funds to target Palmer
amaranth in five Alabama
counties: Barbour, Lauderdale,
Limestone, Madison, and
Russell." Agricultural producers
in the targeted counties
must submit applications on or
before October 30, 2010, to
receive consideration for fund-
ing in FY-2011. Applications
received after October 30,
2010, will still be accepted, but
will be "deferred" to the next
funding cycle.
Interested producers should
visit their nearest USDA
Service Center to determine eligibility.
Individuals are not eligible
for EQIP until they have
completed the Farm Bill eligibility
requirements. Contact
Service Agency Office to begin
this process. NRCS field offices
