President’s Message Christine Parker, CFP®
Dear Colleagues,
Do One Thing – Register today for ‘Super Charge Your Practice,‟ a professional development program on Thurs.,
Nov. 18, 2010 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm at the Westwood Country Club in Vienna, VA. Look inside this newsletter
for a stellar lineup of speakers and program details.
I would like to thank all volunteers, sponsors and consortium partners who participated in the “D.C. Financial
Planning Day,” on Saturday, Oct. 23. “The first annual DC Financial Planning Day was big success. Over 50
volunteer planners and staff from all over the DC metro area devoted an entire Saturday to providing free one-onone
financial counseling and class-room style education sessions to attendees,” says Ken Robinson, CFP®, Pro-
Bono Co-Director and Event Chair.
Outlook - Our clients face a flood of legislative and regulatory uncertainly, impacting nearly every aspect of their
lives - they need our guidance more than ever to distill what they need to know from all the other noise. The list can
go on and on from expiring stimulus tax credits, expiring income tax cuts, repealed estate tax rules, Roth
conversions, and health care reform, among others.
The FPA and local Chapter want to help you be better prepared to address these important issues with your clients.
The free FPA SmartBrief e-newsletter can save you a lot of time because it captures the most important news from
all over, summarizes it, and provides links to the original stories.
Additionally, the Chapter is bringing you expert speakers on a variety of these major issues to help you be better
prepared. The October health care reform program featured an employee benefits expert Tobin Seven, GBDS,
ACBC, MPA who outlined the timeline of major changes and red flagged issues that we as planners need to be
aware of.
In December, you don’t want to miss „Tax Changes Abound,” an estate planning educational program with Wayne
M. Zell, Esq., President of Zell Law as part of the Chapter’s volunteer appreciation luncheon and annual meeting.
Save the date – Dec. 9.
FPA Taking the Profession Into the Future
A message from FPA leadership
Dear Colleague:
With the annual gathering of the financial planning community coming together this weekend at FPA Denver 2010, we
wanted to share our insights on how far the Financial Planning Association (FPA) has come—and more importantly, where
our future lies.
More than a decade ago, the two leading membership organizations of our profession agreed to form FPA. IAFP and ICFP
realized that unification of the voice, focus and resources of the financial planning community was a necessary step to
move the profession forward. They crafted FPA’s core beliefs, which continue to provide the critical guideposts and filters in
supporting the work and decisions of your FPA Board of Directors in pursuing the vision and strategic priorities of our
organization.
We have made tremendous progress in advancing the primary aim and business objectives of FPA.
We facilitate your success as an individual or institutional member who delivers or supports financial planning services to
the public through our core business areas of knowledge, advocacy, community and leadership. Because of FPA, the
public today is more aware than ever of the positive benefits of financial planning. Through our growing relationships with
the media, legislators and regulators, and collaborations with other allied organizations, we have advanced financial
planning’s recognition as a new, important and valuable profession. Our strong base of knowledge and life-long learning
programs respond and expand in alignment with your need for the best and most current information on the technical and
practice management components of serving your clients and running your businesses.
At our Board’s recently completed annual planning retreat in August, we sharpened our vision and strategy as an
association responsive to the needs of our members on all facets of developing the practice and profession of financial
planning. We know it is increasingly critical for FPA to have a finely tuned and relevant value proposition for our members
and to maintain our position as a recognized leader of the financial planning profession. Our outcomes remain to help
financial planning professionals and those allied to financial planning to constantly get better at what they do, to be more
effective and efficient in their professional and personal lives, to make a profitable and enjoyable living with their craft, and
to connect you to consumers who need and want a financial planning relationship.
As we complete 2010, we are clear about our strategic priorities for the coming year ahead.
We will create stronger FPA brand positioning that will ultimately benefit you in greater consumer awareness and new
client relationships.
We will grow our membership ranks, attracting those who share our core beliefs and affirm the FPA Standard of Care,
so that with our increasing numbers we can ignite and influence change with key decision makers and public opinion in a
more powerful way.
We will continue to participate in the important conversations surrounding the regulation of financial planning with
the identification of an appropriate baseline standard. By protecting the use of the title “financial planner” and enforcing
sanctions against those who abuse it, we benefit from the increased recognition and credibility of the profession through
greater oversight.
We will develop an education program that will help all FPA members survive and thrive in a new advisory environment
influenced by a potential new fiduciary mandate for financial services.
Continued on the next page
FPA National Capital Area Newsletter Page 11 November 2010

Continued from Previous Page
We will strengthen the common bond and common interests our members share in financial planning through the
introduction of a revitalized online community platform. Furthermore, we are going to help you dig deeper in the various
specialty areas of financial planning, resulting in greater knowledge and opportunities to serve your clients’ interests and to
grow and manage a successful business.
We will enhance our efforts to promote the services of our financial planning practitioner and allied professional
members through targeted on-line consumer advertising, greater optimization of Internet search engines and strategic
alliances with key media outlets that will drive greater opportunities to FPA and you as trusted, competent sources for
financial planning.
Finally, we will commission an organizational and governance review that will guide and ensure that the FPA Board of
Directors and professional staff continue to operate effectively and prudently as integral working components of FPA. With
current best practices for an association of its size and financial resources, you benefit from an association that is committed
to transparency, current best practices and represents your interests in the best possible way.
As gratifying as the first 10 years of FPA have been, the economic upheaval we’ve all experienced in some way since late
2008 has certainly heightened the importance of this ongoing introspection. It had short-term and long-term implications on
the growth of our profession and organization, resulting in financial and operational challenges we have worked hard to
overcome. This examination led us to launch a comprehensive advertising and branding campaign this fall that will help clarify
our role in the financial planning community. The efforts will help connect consumers with a financial planning expert who
lives by the standards and values expressed by FPA, primarily through the FPA Standard of Care.
With such clarity, FPA can be more effective as your membership organization and broaden its horizon as the place for all
who support and deliver financial planning. From here, we can work directly to educate consumers on the attributes and
benefits of financial planning; help influence positive financial reform efforts for our members and consumers even more; be a
leader in the fiduciary movement; and serve our members by providing the highest levels of knowledge, advocacy, community
and leadership.
We realize all of this would not be possible without your continued commitment, financial support and active participation in
the activities of our association. We thank you for your dedication to FPA.
Most sincerely,
Tom L. Potts, Ph.D., CFP ®
FPA 2010 president
Marvin W. Tuttle Jr., CAE
FPA executive director/CEO
Many of our achievements on your behalf since FPA’s inception in 2000 have been significant and, to a large extent,
groundbreaking …
Advocacy: A recognized leader and voice for the financial planning community, which was solidified with our 2007 landmark
victory against the SEC to overturn the broker-dealer exemption and create a level playing field for all who give financial and
investment advice.
Financial Planning Coalition Partner: We played an instrumental role, along with the CFP Board and NAPFA, in securing
governmental awareness of the need for appropriate regulation of financial planning by championing and securing the first
study commissioned by Congress to look at the financial planning profession.
FPA Standard of Care: We introduced the profession’s first standard of care for the delivery of financial planning services in
2008.
Continued from previous page
Fiduciary: FPA has developed the first phase of a fiduciary education program focused specifically on the process and
decisions involved in delivering financial planning. This proactive move anticipates that all financial planners and investment
advisers will need to provide services at a fiduciary level in the near future.
Leading Research: The FPA Research Center empowers the financial services sector with knowledge and an understanding
of the financial planning process. We conduct and aggregate ongoing and customized research that adds to financial
planning’s evolving body of knowledge with greater understanding of how institutions, practices and consumers participate in
and benefit from financial planning.
Public and Media Awareness of Financial Planning: Since 2000, FPA and its members have appeared in more than
20,000 news stories, reaching a cumulative audience of more than one billion. These efforts have had immeasurable impact
on educating the public at large on the importance and benefits of financial planning.
Practice Management Center: In response to your feedback, we’ve grown and enhanced online, print and live content/tools
offerings to help members in all aspects of their practices.
FPA Major Firms Initiative: Since 2005, our efforts to help this important group include how to best offer education, training,
products, services, research and customized resources to help large financial service firms enable their affiliated advisers to
deliver advice and services.
Student Development: FPA is well on its way to making student chapters an effective way of keeping the pipeline of financial
planning professionals full. We are also a key partner in the Financial Planning Challenge, a college-level competition that
tests student knowledge and offers real-world financial planning experience to participants.
Pro Bono/Consumer Outreach: FPA’s pro bono efforts to help deliver financial planning assistance to those in need began
with our support of those affected by Sept. 11. FPA’s Financial Planning Week, launched in 2002, brings together those who
provide, support and benefit from professional financial planning. Most recently, FPA’s leadership in the newly developed
Financial Planning Days collaboration allows us to teach communities about the financial planning process.
FPA Core Beliefs
Primary Aim
FPA is the community that fosters the value of financial planning and advances the financial planning profession.
Destiny, Cause & Calling
Destiny: Helping create a world where everyone thrives and prospers.
Cause: An inspired community transforming lives through inclusivity, innovation and collaboration.
Calling: Champion the heart of financial planning by leading people to grow, to act and to live their dreams.
Core Values
At FPA, our Core Values represent who we are. They describe our intended state of being. They are so integral to our being
that we would not abandon them even if we were penalized for holding them. We want to attract as members those who share
our values:
Competence
Integrity
Relationships
Stewardship
Scholarships and Discounts for CFP Exam Review Courses
The Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation has come to be widely considered as the definitive mark of
competency by individuals and financial professionals. Many sources encourage novice investors and clients to seek
professionals who have earned this credential. Not only will the material learned from the CFP course curriculum
increase a student's professional competence, but the prestige of holding the designation will likely increase his or her
business.
The CFP Exam - What to Expect
For individuals who have completed the educational requirements to sit for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP)
exam, it will take on average at least 2,000-3,000 hours of study time to get through both the review coursework and
the CFP exam. The CFP Exam is 10 hours long, and is broken into one four-hour session on Friday. On Saturday there
are two three-hour sessions. Students answer 285 multiple-choice questions, which include two comprehensive case
studies. The case studies are designed to force students to apply the course material to "real life” situations. The CFP
exam is given three times per year, in March, July and November. Typically, 50-60 percent of the students taking the
CFP exam pass.
Strategies for Success – Enroll in a Review Course
There are many different strategies that students may employ to increase their chances of passing the CFP Exam. One
approach is to enroll in a review course. There are many review course providers. These courses are especially
valuable to students who are struggling with assimilating vast amounts of material from the coursework taken
completed some time ago.
Review course instructors often provide tips about how to reason through the case studies, setting-up calculator
problems, and how much time should be spent on specific test topics. Additionally, instructors will point out what will
probably be ignored on the CFP exam. There are many possible topics in the CFP Board test bank that will not be
tested or will be assigned very few questions. If students know which topics will fall into this category, they can use
their time and energy to concentrate on more important topics.
