Dan <strong>Candura</strong>, CFp®provides financial advice and education to<br />

consumers and financial professionals. He is founder of his own<br />

education and consulting firm <strong>Candura</strong> Group, LLC.In that role he<br />

provides ethics training across the United States through in-person courses<br />

and webinars. As President of PennyTree Advisers. LLC,a Registered<br />

Investment Advisory firm in Massachusetts, Dan provides personal financial<br />

planning for consumers, financial education counseling to employees in<br />

workplace settings and litigation support and forensic financial analysis services<br />

for attorneys. Dan teaches financial planning, insurance planning and retirement<br />

planning in the Sawyer School of Business at Suffolk University in Boston and is<br />

been quoted in USA Today, The New York Times, Investment<br />

News, TheJournal of <strong>Financial</strong> <strong>Planning</strong>, Wealth Manager and<br />

other publications. A dynamic and engaging speaker, he<br />

presented hundreds of seminars and workshops across the<br />

country on topics ranging from the basics of financial planning<br />

to the future of quality within the financial services industry.<br />

Dan served on the Board of Directors of The<br />

Certified <strong>Financial</strong> Planner Board of<br />

Standards, Inc. from 2004 through 2008<br />

and is a past Chair of the Board of<br />

Professional Review. He chaired the Task<br />

Don Blandin, President and CEO, Investor Protection Trust (lPT)<br />

Don Blandin, president and CEO of the Investor Protection Trust<br />

(IPT) and the Investor Protection Institute (IPI), has worked in and<br />

with a wide variety .of sectors, including business and industry;<br />

nonprofit; academia and philanthropic foundations; and federal, state<br />

and local government, both in the U.S. and globally. Don has been<br />

building coalitions and partnerships for more than three decades.<br />

Don Blandin was appointed president and CEO of the Investor<br />

Protection Trust (IPT), a nonprofit organization devoted to investor<br />

education, in 2004. Founded in 1993, The Investor Protection Trust<br />

works both nationwide and on a grassroots level to provide<br />

independent objective investor education needed by all Americans to make informed investment<br />

decisions.<br />

As president of IPT, Don works frequently with state securities regulators on programs to help<br />

Americans of all ages become wise and safe investors. Don's achievements at IPT over the past<br />

six years include: sponsorship ofthe "Personal Finance Guide for Military Families;" the recent<br />

Elder Investment Fraud and <strong>Financial</strong> Exploitation Prevention Program, in partnership with<br />

North American Securities Administrators <strong>Association</strong> (NASAA) and the <strong>National</strong> Adult<br />

Protective Services <strong>Association</strong> (NAPSA); the Investor Education in Your Community®<br />

program; the national MoneyTrack public television series; The Campaign for Wise and Safe<br />

Investor Education 2020."<br />

Recent awards bestowed -on Don include the 2011 BBB International Torch Award for<br />

Consumer Leadership from the Council of Better Business Bureaus and the 2010 Heart of<br />

<strong>Financial</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Award from the <strong>Financial</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> <strong>Association</strong>.<br />

Prior to assuming his .current leadership role at IPT, Don was president of the American Savings<br />

Education Council (ASEC). While at ASEC from 1996 to 2004, he undertook multiple initiatives<br />

to raise public awareness regarding what it takes to instill long-term personal financial<br />

independence.<br />

Don was an appointed a delegate to both the 1998 and 2002 White House/Congressional<br />

<strong>National</strong> Summits on Retirement Savings, hosted by the President and Congressional leaders.<br />

Don is a founding member and the first national director of Pi Alpha Alpha, the national<br />

honorary society for public administration.<br />

Don Blandin holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from California State University, East<br />

Bay, and a Master of Public Administration degree from The American University in<br />

Washington, DC. Don and his wife, Nanette, reside in Washington, DC. They have a son,<br />

Theodore A. Miles<br />

Associate Commissioner, Securities<br />

D.C. Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking<br />

Mr. Miles has been the Associate Commissioner, Securities Bureau, in the Department of<br />

Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB) since July of 2000. During Mr. Miles' tenure<br />

in that position, he has provided leadership in the field of securities regulation, both in<br />

Washington, DC and nationally. After enactment of the Securities Act of2000, Mr.<br />

Miles reorganized the Securities Bureau to include, for the first time, an Examinations<br />

Division and a Corporation Finance Division, to carry out the new legislation. From 2005<br />

to 2007, Mr. Miles was the Chair of the Investment Adviser Section Committee of<br />

NASAA. He has just rejoined that Committee. From 2007 to 2011, he was a member of<br />

NASAA's Investor Education Section Committee. Since 2008, he has been a member of<br />

NASAA's Legal Services Committee.<br />

Mr. Miles came to DISB from the <strong>National</strong> Science Foundation, where he was the<br />

Deputy General Counsel. Immediately prior to going to the <strong>National</strong> Science<br />

Foundation, he was Vice President for Legal Affairs and Corporate Secretary of <strong>National</strong><br />

Public Radio. Mr. Miles has also held senior legal positions at the Securities and<br />

Exchange Commission and the U.S. Department of Energy. In addition, Mr. Miles taught<br />

Corporations and other securities-related courses at Howard University School of Law<br />

for more than twenty years. Mr. Miles has been a speaker on Securities subjects at the<br />

ABA, the District of Columbia Bar, and other organizations. He is a former member of<br />

the Administrative Conference of the United States and has been a volunteer mediator<br />

with the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.<br />

Mr. Miles is a member of the Bar of the District of Columbia and a graduate of Harvard<br />

College and Howard University School of Law. A lifelong resident of Washington, DC,<br />

Mr. Miles is married to Dr. Carlotta G. Miles; they have three grown children and four<br />

grandchildren.


Karen A. Roberto, Ph.D. is Professor and Director of the Center for Gerontology and the<br />

Institute for Society, Culture and Environment at Virginia Tech. She also holds adjunct<br />

appointments in the Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry and<br />

Behavioral Medicine at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Her research program<br />

focuses on the intersection of health and social support in late life and includes studies of the<br />

daily lives of rural older women with chronic health conditions, family relationships and<br />

care giving, and elder abuse. She is the author of over 150 scholarly articles and book chapters<br />

and the editor/author of ten books. Dr. Roberto has served as chair of the Behavioral and Social<br />

Sciences section of the Gerontological Society of America, and is a fellow of the Gerontological<br />

Society of America, the <strong>Association</strong> for Gerontology in Higher Education, the <strong>National</strong> Council<br />

on Family Relations, and the World Demographic <strong>Association</strong>. She is a recipient of the Gordon<br />

Streib Academic Gerontologist Award from the Southern Gerontological Society and the<br />

Virginia Tech Alumni Award for Excellence in Research.


BETH SHAPIRO KAUFMAN<br />

Beth Shapiro Kaufman is a member in the Washington D.C. law firm of Caplin &<br />

Drysdale, practicing in the areas of estate planning, estate, gift and generation-skipping tax, and<br />

income taxation of trusts and estates. At Caplin & Drysdale, Ms. Kaufman assists wealthy<br />

individuals with their estate planning and tax controversies. She also advises lawyers and other<br />

professionals on complex issues regarding estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer taxes in<br />

both planning and audit contexts. She is frequently retained by counsel to advocate a taxpayer's<br />

position before the Internal Revenue Service, and has been particularly active in obtaining relief<br />

for failed generation-skipping transfer tax exemption allocations. From 1995 to 2001, Ms.<br />

Kaufman was an Associate Tax Legislative Counsel in the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of<br />

Tax Policy. In that capacity, she was responsible for estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer<br />

tax issues, as well as income tax issues relating to trusts and estates. Ms. Kaufman is a Fellow of<br />

the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. She was named the 2008 Top Washington<br />

Lawyer in Trusts and Estates by the Washington Business Journal, as well as appearing in the list<br />

of The Best Lawyers in America, SuperZawyers, and Washingtonian magazine's top lawyers. Ms.<br />

Kaufman received her B.A. from Pomona College and her J.D. from Harvard Law School, where<br />

she was an editor of the Harvard Law Review.<br />

Brent Burns is President and Founding Partner of Asset Dedication, LLC. Brent's deep<br />

background in empirical finance formed the basis for Asset Dedication's modeling and<br />

analysis. His work with Asset Dedication began more than a decade ago at the<br />

University of San Francisco, where he partnered with co-founder Professor Stephen<br />

Huxley to study portfolio performance and the impact of withdrawal rates, inflation, and<br />

market conditions.<br />

Brent is the co-author of Asset Dedication: How to Grow Wealthy with the Next<br />

Generation of Asset Allocation (McGraw-Hili, 2005). He holds an MBA from the<br />

University of San Francisco, and is also a former world-class track and field athlete. He<br />

Gregory R. Valliere - Chief Political Strategist<br />

With over 30 years of experience in covering Washington for institutional investors, Greg Valliere<br />

coordinates political and economic research. He focuses on how Congress and the White House shape<br />

fiscal policies and monitors the Federal Reserve Board's interest rate policies. Prior to joining Potomac<br />

Research, Mr. Valliere served as Chief Policy Strategist for Solei! Securities Corporation. He previously<br />

John L. Olsen, CLU, ChFC, AEP is a financial advisor and estate planner practicing in St.<br />

Louis County, Missouri.<br />

John graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia, in 1968, with a B.A in<br />

history. He holds the Chartered Life Underwriter (1983) and the Chartered <strong>Financial</strong><br />

Consultant (1985)designations from the American College. John completed the two-year<br />

i.'t course in personal and business life insurance offered by the Life Underwriters Training<br />

Council (LUTC) in 1975, and the one-year Advanced Sales course in 1979. In 2004, he<br />

John has written and taught courses in insurance, financial, and estate planning and conducted seminars for agents,<br />

planners, and lay audiences. In addition to serving his own clients, John provides case consulting services to<br />

attorneys, accountants, insurance agents, and financial advisors, and provides expert witness services in litigation<br />

involving annuities and investment products. He is a Past President of the St. Louis chapter of the <strong>National</strong><br />

<strong>Association</strong> of Insurance and <strong>Financial</strong> Advisors (NAIFA), serves on the Board of Directors of the St. Louis Estate<br />

<strong>Planning</strong> Council, on the Continuing Education Advisory Board of the American Academy of Estate <strong>Planning</strong><br />

In 2009, John completed, with co-author Michael E. Kitces, the second revised edition ofThe Annuity Advisor, a book<br />

for professional advisors published by The <strong>National</strong> Underwriter Company. His article, "Annuities and Suitability:<br />

Reflections on the State of the Debate", appearing in the Nov, 2006 issue of the Journal of <strong>Financial</strong> Service Professionals,<br />

won the First Place prize in the 2006 Kenneth Black, Jr. Journal Author Award Program. John is co-author, with Jack<br />

Marrion, of Index Annuities: A Suitable Approach, published in 2011 by their firm, Olsen & Marrion, LLC<br />

(www.indexannuitybook.com).In 2011, John was awarded the Paul S. Mills Scholarship by the Foundation for<br />

<strong>Financial</strong> Service Professionals, an award established to recognize the conferee's demonstrated commitment to<br />

lifelong education, volunteerism, and ethical practice. He is currently working on a new book, on taxation and<br />

suitability of annuities, for professional advisors.<br />

John is a sought-after speaker, having given presentations to chapters of the <strong>Financial</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> <strong>Association</strong>, the<br />

<strong>National</strong> <strong>Association</strong> of Insurance and <strong>Financial</strong> Advisors, and the Society of <strong>Financial</strong> Services Professionals, to<br />

several Estate <strong>Planning</strong> Councils, the Missouri Society of CPAs, the Southern California Tax & Estate <strong>Planning</strong> Forum,<br />

the American Academy of Estate <strong>Planning</strong> Attorneys, several national conventions of the <strong>Financial</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> <strong>Association</strong>,<br />

John lives in Kirkwood, Missouri with his wife, Katherine. He enjoys reading and playing guitar, arguing almost<br />

Melissa Beck Hamidi<br />

Vice President, Field Operations<br />

Melissa Beck-Hamidi joined LivHOME in 2002 as a Care Manager in<br />

the Newport Beach office. Melissa first joined LivHOME as a<br />

professional Care Manager in the de novo Newport Beach, CA office.<br />

During her corporate tenure, Melissa has led the successful start-up<br />

and implementation of 8 locations, and continues to grow their<br />

nationwide presence through Franchise sales.<br />

Prior to joining LivHOME, Melissa spent 10 years working in the<br />

Continuous Care Retirement setting of southern California, where she<br />

earned her Nursing Home Administrator's license. During this time<br />

Melissa partnered with an elite team of Medical Director's building the<br />

facility's reputation for exceHence in orthopedic rehabilitation, and<br />

dementia care. This allowed her to gain a deep knowledge of the<br />

geriatric population, and fueled her continued passion for serving older<br />

adults.<br />

Prior to her role as Vice President, Melissa's career experience<br />

include positions held as Director of Social Services, Skilled Nursing<br />

Administrator and Geriatric Care Manager.<br />

Melissa earned her degree in Business Health Administration from the<br />

University of California, Riverside and is certified in the Eden<br />

Alternative.<br />

STEVE STARNES<br />

Steve is a financial planner at the Monitor Group, Inc. in McLean VA. He is involved in all aspects of<br />

integrated wealth management, including estate planning, tax planning and preparation, investment<br />

management, philanthropic giving and other complex financial issues. Steve specializes in working with<br />

clients with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Steve has a professional contribution published in<br />

the Journal of <strong>Financial</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> and speaks regularly about diminished financial capacity caused by<br />

dementia.<br />

Steve graduated with bachelor's degrees in Economics and Aerospace Engineering from the University of<br />

Michigan. In 2010 he received his MBA from University of Virginia's Darden School of Business.
