150 150 th CELEBRATION CELEBRATION CELEBRATION OF OF MUMBAI MUMBAI CIRCLE<br />
CIRCLE<br />
I: : - 23 23 23 MARCH MARCH 2012: 2012:- 2012: A cultural awareness programme was organized by the<br />
Aurangabad and <strong>Mumbai</strong> circle jointly at the Ellora, Aurangabad on 23 March<br />
2012. The programme was inaugurated by the Sh. K. Shankar Narayana, HE<br />
Governor <strong>of</strong> Maharashtra. Other dignitaries attended the programme were Sh.<br />
Sh.Chandrakant Khaire, Member <strong>of</strong> Parliament, Sh.balasahab Thorat, Revenue<br />
minister GOM, general public, student and media persons.<br />
During the programme an exhibition on the outstanding conservation work<br />
done by the Aurangabad and <strong>Mumbai</strong> circle were displayed at the site which<br />
was very much appreciated by the Governors and other dignitaries.
Sh. D. Dayalan, Superintending archaeologist, Aurangabad circle gave his<br />
welcome address and briefed about the ASI.<br />
In his address Sh.Chandrakant Khaire, Member <strong>of</strong> Parliament, Sh.balasahab<br />
Thorat, Revenue minister GOM emphasized the importance <strong>of</strong> the monument<br />
<strong>of</strong><br />
Maharashtra which needs more attention for their conservation and<br />
restoration.<br />
On this occasion the retired <strong>Archaeological</strong> survey <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong>’s staff who had<br />
contributed valuable service in different field were also felicitated by the<br />
governor by giving them medals.
HE Governor <strong>of</strong> Maharashtra appreciated the role <strong>of</strong> <strong>Archaeological</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>India</strong> in conserving the priceless properties <strong>of</strong> the country.<br />
At last, programme was concluded with vote <strong>of</strong> thanks by Sh. M.S. Chouhan,<br />
Superintending archaeologist <strong>Mumbai</strong> <strong>Circle</strong> and thereafter local Marathi<br />
cultural dance were performed by the local artist.<br />

Exhibition entitled entitled “<strong>Archaeological</strong> “<strong>Archaeological</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong> <strong>India</strong> outside outside <strong>India</strong>’: <strong>India</strong>’:- <strong>India</strong>’:<br />
As a part <strong>of</strong> 150 th celebration, <strong>Archaeological</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong> organized an<br />
exhibition entitled “<strong>Archaeological</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong> outside <strong>India</strong>’ on 18 th July
2012 at National gallery <strong>of</strong> Modern Art, Sir Cowasji Jehangir Public<br />
Hall,Mahatma Gandhi road, <strong>Mumbai</strong>.<br />
The exhibition was inaugurated by Sh. Jayant Kumar Banthia Chief Secretary<br />
government <strong>of</strong> Maharashtra. Other senior <strong>of</strong>ficers from the state government<br />
participated the inaugural programme including Sh. Anand kulkarni, Principal<br />
Secretary.<br />
The foreign representatives including HE Counselate General <strong>of</strong> Singapore<br />
Mr.Lin chung ying and representative from Chinese Counselate General <strong>of</strong>fice<br />
also attended this programme.<br />
Total 88 pannels are displayed in the museum showing photographs <strong>of</strong><br />
excavation, conservation, preservation and arrangements <strong>of</strong> museum carried<br />
out at different countries. Important among these are explorations and<br />
excavations conducted by ASI in Egypt, Nepal and Bahrain; chemical<br />
preservation <strong>of</strong> paintings in Bhutan; establishment <strong>of</strong> a Museum in Angola;<br />
structural conservation works <strong>of</strong> Ta Prohm Temple in Cambodia and Vat Phou<br />
Temple in Lao PDR, structural conservation as well as chemical preservation<br />
works at Bamiyan in Afganistan, Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia and Ananda<br />
temple in Myanmar.<br />
The programme began at 4:15 PM with the a formal inauguration followed by<br />
lighting <strong>of</strong> lamp, round up <strong>of</strong> exhibition, welcome address by ADG, ASI and<br />
thereafter address <strong>of</strong> by the Chief guest. The work <strong>of</strong> the archaeological survey<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong> outside <strong>India</strong> displayed in the exhibition was greatly appreciated by<br />
the Chief Secretary as well as the foreign representatives.
After inauguration two booklets; one published by the ASI headquarter and<br />
another by the <strong>Mumbai</strong> circle on the ‘Monuments <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mumbai</strong> circle’ was<br />
released by the Chief Secretary.<br />
Large numbers <strong>of</strong> public, media persons attended this exhibition.

As a part <strong>of</strong> 150th celebration, <strong>Archaeological</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong><br />
<strong>Mumbai</strong> circle with collaboration <strong>of</strong> the Deccan College Post<br />
Graduate and Research Institute Pune organized a workshop<br />
entitled “Archaeology <strong>of</strong> western <strong>India</strong>’ from 5 th -6 th Nov. 2012 at<br />
Deccan College Pune.<br />
Sh. G.B. Deglurkar, President DCPGRI was the chief guest <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Innaugural function and Dr. M. K. Dhawalikar and Dr. A.P.<br />
Jamkhedkar, were Chiarperson and guest <strong>of</strong> honour.
On 5 th Nov 2012, morning programme commence at 9:00 am with<br />
registration and lighting <strong>of</strong> ceremonial lamp thereafter followed<br />
with welcome address by Sh. M.S. Chouhan, Superintending<br />
Archaeologist <strong>Mumbai</strong> <strong>Circle</strong>, address on introduction <strong>of</strong> the<br />
workshop by Sh. Vasant Shinde, Joint Director DCPGRI, release <strong>of</strong><br />
abstract by G. B. Deglurkar, Presidenr DCPGRI, address by Pr<strong>of</strong>. M.K.<br />
Dhawalikar, chairperson <strong>of</strong> inaugural function, address by Sh. S.K.<br />
Mitra, Director Monument, address by Sh. A. P. Jamkhedkar, guest <strong>of</strong><br />
honour, address by Sh. V.P. Bhatta, special invitee, and thereafter<br />
vote <strong>of</strong> thanks by Sh. B.C. Deotare, Head <strong>of</strong> department DCPGRI .<br />
An exhibition was also organized by the ASI <strong>Mumbai</strong> circle on the<br />
important conservation, discovery, and excavation done in the past<br />
years were shown in the display.<br />
Total 74 abstracts <strong>of</strong> the scholars <strong>of</strong> the ASI and outside ASI has<br />
been received under the category <strong>of</strong> prehistory, protohistory,
historical archaeology, medieval archaeology and conservation and<br />
management which are published in the abstract.<br />
The presentation were organized in two separate rooms at the<br />
Deccan College and divided into five sessions. 6 papers were<br />
presented in the first session under the category <strong>of</strong> prehistory, 14<br />
papers in second session under protohistory, 27 in third session<br />
under historical archaeology, 18 in fourth session under medieval<br />
archaeology and 9 papers in fifth session under conservation and<br />
heritage management category.
On 6 th November at 6:30-7:30 pm the workshop was concluded with<br />
valedictory session chaired by Pr<strong>of</strong>. Rajguru.
