TRiO Upward Bound Program Celebrates Thirty Years

TRiO Upward Bound at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, a college 

access program for first-generation college students, is commemorating its 

30th year of preparing high school students for success in college, graduate 

school and the workforce. 

TRiO Upward Bound is a grant funded program developed through the passage 

of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. Funded by the U.S. Department 

of Education, TRiO gives high school students equal opportunities 

and preparation to attend post-secondary education. 

The program at BU supports nine area high schools and is funded to serve 

90 students. Students receive assistance with college enrollment, retention, 

improvement in high school, preparation for the PSSA, SAT and ACT, tutoring, 

financial literacy and career development. 

Kate Bauman, TRiO UB‘s program director at BU, said, ―During the summer 

our students have the opportunity to live on campus and immerse themselves 

in the college experience. They attend classes in academic buildings, 

learn college study skills, navigate campus, develop time management skills 

and live with a new roommate for six weeks.‖ In addition, students also participate 

in field trips to various colleges and universities, as well as nearby 

cities to broaden and enhance their academic opportunities. 

On August 2, 2008, TRiO Upward Bound at Bloomsburg University celebrated 

its 30th anniversary, inviting current Bounders, alumni and staff to 

share their experiences and successes through the years. ―A number of our 

TRiO Upward Bound alumni come back to work with and mentor our students,‖ 

Bauman said. ―We are proud not only of our program‘s history, but 

of the opportunity to continue to serve more students in our region.‖

TRiO UB@BU Celebrates Success 

This year‘s reunion was held at the newly renovated 

Monty‘s Café on the upper campus of Bloomsburg 

University—complete with spectacular views. 

Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski, of the 11th 

District of Pennsylvania, provided a warm 

welcome to guests in attendance at the 30th 

Reunion of TRiO Upward Bound at Bloomsburg 

University, held August 2, 2008. 

The TRiO UB T-Shirt Quilt, now one of two 

quilts, was proudly displayed at the reunion.

TRiO UB@BU 2008 Graduate Named Dell Scholar

Shamokin High School graduate, Nichole Cosgrove, is one of 

only four students in Pennsylvania and one of only 250 students 

from across the country to be awarded a scholarship through the 

Dell Scholars Program. 

The Dell Scholarship, funded through the Michael and Susan Dell 

Foundation, is awarded to students with qualifying financial need 

who participate in a college readiness program. Since 2004, the 

foundation has provided more than $9 million in college scholarships 

to cover the costs of tuition, fees, books and room and board. 

Nichole joined TRiO UB@BU as a junior, spending only one short 

summer with us in June/July 2008. Our summer trip to PSU must 

have left a lasting impression as Nichole began her college career 

in fall 2008 at the Penn State Hazleton campus with plans to transfer, 

upon completion of her sophomore year, to the University 

Park campus. 

Nichole is the second TRiO UB@BU alumnus in a row to receive 

this academic honor. Jorge Maldonado ‗07 of Bloomsburg Area 

High School was honored as the only recipient in PA the year 

prior.

SU4U Scholars Recognized at Annual Scholarship Reception 


Although Krys Rowe (Bloomsburg ‗06) and Chelsea Kerstetter (Shikellamy ‘08) never crossed paths 

during their participation in TRiO Upward Bound, they recently had the opportunity to meet one another 

at a scholarship reception hosted by Susquehanna University President, Dr. Jay Lemons. Not only are 

these young women both TRiO UB@BU alumni and current Susquehanna University students, they are 

both recipients of the SU4U Scholarship. SU4U was established in the 2000-2001 academic year 

through a partnership between the Charles B. Degenstein Foundation and Susquehanna University. The 

program is designed to encourage regional 

students and their families in the pursuit of 

higher education, offering mentoring and 

financial support to students who are in the 

first in their families from Snyder, Union, 

Northumberland and other neighboring counties 

to pursue a college degree. Each year 

these students are honored a reception 

hosted by the University‘s president so they 

can share their academic experiences and 

their successes.

Class of 2008 Bounder Awarded PAEOPP Scholarship 


Stephanie Klock, Shikellamy High School ‘08, was 

recently awarded the Pennsylvania Association of Educational 

Opportunity Program Personnel (PAEOPP) annual scholarship in the 

high school division. Each fall, five TRiO Upward Bound graduates 

from across the state are selected to receive this honor and TRiO 

UB@BU was fortunate to once again have one of our own recognized. 

Stephanie began her college career pursing a broadcast journalism major 

at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA in the fall of 

2008. It was here that she earned her first television reporting debut on 

the campus television station. Stephanie will follow a similar quest 

when she transfers to Temple University this spring. As always, 

Stephanie planned her transfer well in advance. She has even had an 

appointment made with the Temple TRiO Student Support Services 

director since November in order to prepare for her January arrival!

Bloomsburg University Bounder Alumni Awarded 

Textbook Scholarships 


Thanks to the generosity of TRiO UB@BU Alumni, our scholarship 

fund has grown, allowing us to now award not one, but 

two Bounder alumni bookstore scholarships each fall. Fall 2008 

recipients included, Tiffany Tobias, Pottsville ‘05 and Lauren 

Le, Mt. Carmel, ‘04. Tiffany is a current junior majoring in 

clinical lab science, with graduation on the horizon in spring 

2010. Lauren is a senior, biology/microbiology major, who 

will complete her degree this May. Both Tiffany and Lauren 

had the chance to attend the annual scholarship luncheon and 

had the chance to meet one another for the first time. As to be 

expected, they shared their UB days and had the opportunity to 

compare and contrast notes on college life. 

Where are all the male Bounders you might ask? Good question. The challenge has been 

made for the Class of 2009. I hope to publish multiple stories of scholarship recipients and 

Bridge students, both male and female this time next year! 


Bridge Students Take On The World of Work 


The Bridge summer has always served as the competitive capstone to the TRiO Upward Bound experience. 

Six credits of college level coursework, mastering college study skills and transitioning to fall semester, 

coupled with the chance to be a ―Bounder‖ one last time. In additional to the traditional Bridge 

experience, this summer provided an additional challenge. Each Bridge student was responsible for contacting 

a professional working in their intended field of study, scheduling an interview appointment, researching 

their field to formulate relevant questions, conducting a professional interview and sending 

thank-you correspondence. 

Leslie Cope, NS ‘08, who is currently pursuing pre-veterinary studies at Bloomsburg University, used 

this opportunity to network with area veterinarians. Leslie first visited the Leighow Clinic in Bloomsburg. 

Here she met with a doctor, toured the office, and even had the chance to review x-rays and observe 

a canine surgery in progress. Later in the summer, Leslie met with a technician at the Animal Care 

Center in Danville. She received a tour and observed puppies being held in isolation until their diagnosis 

was complete. Her experience allowed her the opportunity to compare and contrast local veterinary facilities, 

as well as to differentiate between the various positions available in the field of animal care. 

Torn between two career paths, journalism and law, Stephanie Klock, Shikellamy ‗08, decided to further 

explore both. She first met with a lawyer at Harding & Hill in Bloomsburg. He shared the educational 

and career path that he followed, as well as tips for Stephanie to consider in the future. Next 

Stephanie‘s quest led her to Wilkes-Barre, PA to visit an evening anchor at WBRE News, a local NBC 

News affiliate. Here she learned the ins and outs of working as a reporter as well as the importance of 

image in the profession. 

Samantha Howley, Mahanoy ‗08, began her college career at Shippensburg this fall as a psychology 

major. With many questions as to the opportunities available behind the major, she opted to meet with a 

licensed counselor at the Center for Counseling and Human Development at Bloomsburg University. 

Her experience provided her with unique insight, as her interviewer had worked in both private practice, 

as well as higher education, and she was currently completing her doctoral studies. 

Surrounded by certified secondary education professionals, Chelsea Kerstetter, Shikellamy ‗08, had no 

trouble finding willing interview candidates among our very own summer 2008 TRiO UB@BU teaching 

staff. Armed with plenty of questions, Chelsea sat down with both new and seasoned professionals, from 

teachers preparing for their first full-time professional experience to those retired from full-time positions 

for multiple years. These diverse teaching backgrounds allowed her to gain valuable insight into 

her major of secondary education at Susquehanna University.

Samantha Sanders, Shikellamy ‗08, was unable to 

conduct an informational interview to prepare for her 

pre-med major at Cedar Crest College, but not for a 

lack of trying. She learned patiently the art of phone/ 

fax tag over the six week period as she patiently tried to 

schedule an appointment with a local neurosurgeon. 

Although they never met, she did learn one thing for 

certain, the life of a neurosurgeon is a busy one!

The Senior Seminar Series: Keeping Senior Bounders on Track

With increased academic expectations and leadership roles, AP and 

dual enrollment curriculums, homecoming and prom - it‘s no wonder 

senior Bounders often find it difficult to make time to plan for their 

impending college experience! After all, a great deal of time needs to 

be spent filling out college applications, the FAFSA can be overwhelming 

and what about all those questions – what is college really like? 

What should I pack for my first semester away from home? What is 

there to do when I’m not in class? Are college professors scary? Senior 

Bounder‘s needs are many and their time is limited. 

TRiO Upward Bound @ Bloomsburg University is constantly striving 

to best meet the needs of our Bounders and we have made senior 

Bounder retention a top priority. Last fall we began the Senior Seminar 

Series. Meant to assist senior Bounders and their families 

through the last leg in their journey to becoming enrolled in post secondary 

education, the series has seen great success. 

The Senior Seminar Series is comprised of four events; College Application 

Completion Night, FAFSA Application Completion Night, 

College Q&A and finally, a culminating celebratory event. During 

PHEAA helps with Max’s FAFSA the fall, senior Bounders are invited to campus and encouraged to 

bring their college applications and/or college website information. 

With the help of TRiO staff, alumni and current graduate students, seniors work to complete their applications. 

During College Application Night, 2008 seniors completed over 50 college applications! 

In early February we hold our second Senior Seminar Series, 

FAFSA Completion Night. Filing the FAFSA for the first 

time can be daunting. Senior Bounders and their families are 

encouraged to come to campus and file their FAFSA, stress 

free with the help of representatives from PHEAA. Last February 

70% of the senior class came to campus to complete 

and submit their FAFSA. We even had current TRiO 

UB@BU alumni stop by to work on their FAFSA renewals!

The third phase of the Senior Seminar Series is an interactive discussion 

for seniors and their families all about ―college life‖. For this event we 

elicit the help of Bloomsburg University faculty, club and organization 

advisors, residence life, campus safety, TRiO Student Support Services 

and graduate students to field questions from Bounders and their families. 

Nothing is off limits this night – participants are encouraged to 

have their burning questions answered!

Finally, to wrap up the Senior Seminar Series we celebrate! Successful 

completion of a student‘s senior year is a huge accomplishment and the 

start of great things for TRiO Bounders! The 2008 Bounder class enjoyed a gourmet dinner complete 

with dining etiquette instruction. The 2009 senior Bounders will host a senior/junior share evening. 

Senior Bounders will share their senior year experiences with the current junior Bounders. 

In its second year, the Senior Seminar Series is again proving to be both valuable and fun. We are currently 

planning our spring Senior Seminar events and look forward to continuing to assist our senior 

Bounders as they see their dreams of post secondary education come to fruition! 


Service Day 2008

On Saturday, July 12, 2008 high school students participating in Bloomsburg 

University‘s TRiO Upward Bound program were involved in the second annual 

Service Day. Eight different groups were sent to seven sites throughout Columbia 

and Montour county. 

BU student Niki Root (BU Nursing ‗10) led a group of 

five students to the Columbia Mall where TRiO Upward 

Bound sponsored an American Red Cross Blood Drive. 

She was accompanied by assistant director, Tia J.L. 

Dreckman. 

Jessica Boyd (BU Communications ‗09) and Michael 

Dalton (BU Secondary Ed./Math ‗09) led groups of six 

and seven respectively, to Suncom Industries in Bloomsburg. 

Another group of six students, led by Norman Cooper (BU Communications ‗09) worked 

alongside program director Kate Bauman, at the Animal Resource Center in Millville. 

Laura Kline, (BU Communications ‗09), led a group of seven students to Beyond Violence in Berwick. She was 

aided there by academic coordinator, Jennifer L. Cughan . 

Another group of five students served at The Children‘s Museum of Bloomsburg 

under the leadership of Lindsay Rabbits (BU Social 

Work ‗09). 

Michael Becker, housing supervisor, facilitated a group 

of seven students at the Ronald McDonald House in Danville. 

The Women‘s Center, Inc. of Columbia/Montour counties 

was visited by Danny Seddon (Millersville Accounting 

‗09) and a group of seven students. Whether the students and Tutor Counselors 

were cleaning, weeding, cooking, or visiting, all were engaged and providing 

service with a smile! 

On Friday, July 11 th , the TRiO Upward Bound students and staff were treated to a wonderful presentation to kickoff 

their Service Day, by retired Bloomsburg University professor, Gary Clark. His moving portrayal of the 

homeless and discussion on the Northeast Pennsylvania Alliance Against Homelessness 

at BU, proved intriguing for all in attendance. With his poignant stories and down to 

earth solutions, the students were challenged to serve people in their communities in 

ways that matter. Saturday, July 12 th provided them with an outlet for that service!

BU’s MSN Students Host Wellness Fair for Bounders

Jessie learns the ―skinny‖ on fat, foods to 

enjoy and foods to avoid. 

In order to be a successful student you need to have the right tools. Textbooks, notebooks, pens, pencils… 

you get the idea. But how about the most important piece of the puzzle, YOU—a healthy you! 

This summer, graduate students in Bloomsburg University‘s MSN (Master of Science in Nursing) program 

hosted a Wellness Fair for Bounders only. On July 17, Northumberland‘s lobby was transformed 

into a information clearinghouse for all teen wellness topics. Our guests staffed interactive displays 

sharing information on areas such as Smoking, Body Art, Fast Food, Skin Cancer, Safe Driving, Healthy 

Relationships and more. Bounders participated in quizzes and games to test their knowledge in a variety 

of wellness topics, in addition to picking up some great tips and freebies. MSN Students worked hard to 

research a topic of interest, design an informational board and discuss their topic one on one with small 

groups of Bounders. 

In addition to hosting a Bounder Only Wellness Fair, MSN students in Dr. Ficca‘s Community Health 

Class served as guest speakers in afternoon elective courses addressing topics such as nutrition, injury 

prevention for athletes, healthy eating tips, career paths for nurses and more. A number of Bounders 

have expressed interest in nursing as a major, so they were particularly interested in a chance to speak 

with both nursing students and nursing faculty. In fact, two Bounders in attendance during the summer 

2008 program have been accepted into the nursing program at Bloomsburg University for fall 2009!
