Suite 2900
Atlanta, GA 30303
Dear President Mitchell,
September 1, 2010
10- 0,1652
We are pleased to nominate Ms. Rosi, , n Pope as our joint appointment to the
Commission to Honor the Atlanta Student Movement and the Committee on Appeal for
Human Rights.
Ms. Pope is a longtime civic and civil rights leader who resides at 1354 Cascade Falls Dr
SW, Atlanta, GA 30311.
Thank you.

Roslyn Pope, Ph.D.
Dr. Roslyn Pope, a native Atlantan, has achieved a long list of accomplishments in
a variety of fields. She has excelled in music, academia, religion, and political
activism. While at Booker T. Washington High School, she served as Glee Club
accompanist and performed at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's Young People's
Concert. She was the first female elected student government president, and was
also elected president of the State Student Government Association of Georgia.
At Spelman College, she was elected president of the freshman, sophomore, and
junior classes, as well as the Spelman Student Government Association. While at
Spelman she was chosen to study in Europe as a Merrill Scholar. During her 15month
sojourn, she matriculated at L'Ecole Normale de Musique and studied with
the renowned Nadia Boulanger. Her musical career has included many
performances as piano soloist, accompanist, and choral director, as well as
additional study at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Upon returning to Spelman from Europe, as president of the student body, she
became immersed in the budding Student Civil Rights Movement. She was the
primary author of "An Appeal for Human Rights," the official manifesto of the
Atlanta Student Movement. This document has been heralded as a remarkable
representation of the determination of young people to throw off the stigma of
segregation and discrimination and to achieve their birthrights as human beings
and as citizens of Atlanta and the United States. She currently serves as a
founding member of CUBE (Citizens United for Better Education).
Roslyn attained a Master's Degree in English from Georgia State University and a
Doctorate in Humanities from Syracuse University. While at Syracuse, she was
privileged to be named a Kent Fellow by the Danforth Foundation.
She has taught in the Department of Religious Studies at Pennsylvania State
University and chaired the Division of Humanities at Bishop College. She also
served as Director of Ethnic and Intercultural Relations at the University of Texas
at Arlington. She holds a second Doctorate in Transpersonal Psychology from
Delphi University.
Additionally, Roslyn excelled as an advertising consultant at AT&T, from which
she retired. Throughout, she has sought opportunities to contribute toward peace,
culture, and education.
Roslyn is the mother of two daughters and the grandmother of a grandson and
granddaughter, Jordan and Lilyan.
