slope of the hill on which Liddington Castle (OMi)<br />

stands.<br />

28. Endlang Dich to Uphammere : ' Along the Dyke<br />

to Upham Pond.'<br />

The name Upham survives in <strong>that</strong> of Lower Upham<br />

Farm (OMi) in Aldbourne parish. The pond was no doubt<br />

one of <strong>those</strong> sm<strong>all</strong> artificial rainponds made on the downs<br />

for the watering of cattle. The Liddington charter<br />

mentions a pyt at or close to the angle in the Chisledon <strong>by</strong>.<br />

above mentioned ; and <strong>this</strong> and the pond may <strong>be</strong> the same<br />

landmark. In any case the pond <strong>must</strong> have <strong>be</strong>en somewhere<br />

near <strong>that</strong> angle in the <strong>by</strong>.<br />

29. Of ther Dich on the Heued Londe southward ·.<br />

' From the Dyke to the south end of the Headland (of a<br />

ploughland).'<br />

30. Thanen on the Stourewe (<strong>read</strong> Stanraewe) 1 : ' Then<br />

to the Row of Stones.'<br />

These stones <strong>must</strong> have <strong>be</strong>en <strong>by</strong>. marks on <strong>that</strong> part of<br />

the <strong>by</strong>. which runs E. and W. about 3 fur. N. of Lower<br />

Upham Farm (OMi).<br />

In the 1591 perambulation of Aldbourne <strong>this</strong> piece of<br />

<strong>by</strong>. is c<strong>all</strong>ed Badburie Mere, ' Badbury Balk.'<br />
