Wood) Hill.'<br />

I have <strong>read</strong> burh for <strong>be</strong>orch. The reference is obviously<br />

to the earthworks (OMi) in Broad Chalke parish just W.<br />

of the Bishopstone <strong>by</strong>. about if m. SSE. of Stoke Farthing.<br />

The <strong>by</strong>. is here passing over a hill.<br />

8. Ofer Beriganciimb : ' Over Berry Com<strong>be</strong>.'<br />

This is the com<strong>be</strong> just N. of the hill, about m. SW. of<br />

Croucheston.<br />

9. On Tbbles Burnan : ' To Ebble's Bourne.'<br />

Where the W. <strong>by</strong>. of Bishopstone crosses the Ebble<br />

3 fur. W. of Croucheston. 1<br />

10. On Beordune : ' To Barrow Down.'<br />

Mentioned also in B.832 and B.1004, K.1209, both<br />

<strong>charters</strong> of Eb<strong>be</strong>sbourne. The down on the N. <strong>by</strong>. of Bishopstone<br />

parish, part of which is c<strong>all</strong>ed Netton Down (OMi).<br />

Numerous tumuli on it.<br />

11. On thes Hlinces Ende : ' On the End of the Lynch.'<br />

This lynch is also mentioned in B.832 (see above).<br />

<strong>It</strong> was at the NW. corner of Bishopstone parish on the down<br />

above Burcom<strong>be</strong> Ivers (OMi).<br />

12. On thone Smalan Weg ofer Higcumb : 'To the<br />

Narrow Track above Hay Com<strong>be</strong>.'<br />

Hay Com<strong>be</strong> was evidently the great com<strong>be</strong> <strong>be</strong>low and<br />

N. of Burcom<strong>be</strong> Ivers (OMi). The track ran along the<br />

top of the ridge on the N. <strong>by</strong>. of Bishopstone. <strong>It</strong> is c<strong>all</strong>ed<br />

the Smal Path, Narrow Path, in B.832 (see above).<br />

13. On thon Stan : ' To the Stone.'<br />

Almost certainly the same as the Beornulfes Stan of the<br />

Ucganforda charter B.1030. On the N. <strong>by</strong>. of Bishopstone<br />

<strong>by</strong> Hunt's Down (OMi).'<br />

14. On thet Heth westeweard : ' To the Heath (on its<br />

west side ?).'<br />

The heath <strong>must</strong> have <strong>be</strong>en on the site of Hare Warren<br />

(OMi).<br />
