Out to the Avon.'<br />

The <strong>by</strong>. follows the backwater, the old dyke, till the<br />

latter joins the main river about f m. W. <strong>by</strong> S. of Little<br />

Durnford (OMi).<br />

16. Thonne andlang Afene oth thaes Poles Heafod:<br />

' Then along the Avon as far as the Head of the Pool.'<br />

This pool in the river was where the <strong>by</strong>. now leaves the<br />

river to turn W. at a point f m. SSW. of Little Durnford<br />

(OMi).<br />

17. Thonne of, etc. up on Aettan Dene north Hylda?i<br />

(<strong>read</strong> Hlydan) swa swa seo Ealde Furh ryct up to thaem<br />

Staenenan Stapole : ' Then from the Pool up to the North<br />

Slope of Aetta's Dean as the Old Furrow runs to the Stone<br />

Pillar.'<br />

This dean is mentioned in the Bemerton charter,<br />

B.1216. The dean itself is f m. ENE. of Hill Farm (OMi).<br />

The <strong>by</strong>. runs, as descri<strong>be</strong>d in the charter, on the N. side<br />

of it. The furrow ran along the E. part of <strong>this</strong> S. <strong>by</strong>.<br />

probably as far as the Salisbury road, on which the stone<br />

pillar probably stood.<br />

18. And swa west to thaere Ealdan Hlinc Raewe:<br />

* And so west to the Old Row of Trees on the Lynch.'<br />

This <strong>must</strong> have <strong>be</strong>en on the S. <strong>by</strong>. W. of the road above<br />

mentioned.<br />

19. And swa <strong>be</strong> thaere Trth Mearce nither to Hig<br />

Forde : ' And so <strong>by</strong> the Balk of the Ploughed Land down<br />

to Hay Ford.'<br />

20. FhGnne of, etc. eft ofer Wilig on Oteres Hoi: ' Then<br />

from Hay Ford over the Wylye to Otter's Hole.'<br />

The balk of the ploughed land is mentioned in the<br />

other South Newton charter, as is also the hay ford.<br />

The Trthland was probably about half-way <strong>be</strong>tween where<br />

the <strong>by</strong>. passes the road above mentioned and the point<br />

where it reaches the Wylye. The hay ford was on the<br />

Wylye 1 fur. W. of Wilton railway station. Landmark 20<br />

shows <strong>that</strong> the Otter's Hole was at <strong>this</strong> ford, on the W.<br />

bank of the river.<br />

A second charter of at least part of the lands of South<br />

Newton.<br />
