Hides. 10 at Newton with a mead at Weolces Clif;<br />

3 at Fyrstes Felda.<br />

The extant copy of the survey is of AS. date, and may<br />

<strong>be</strong> contemporary with the grant.<br />

Survey.<br />

1. Aerest on sutheweardan of Ο teres Hole up andlang<br />

Wiliges oththa Lace : ' First at the south end (of the grant)<br />

from Otter's Hole up along the River Wylye as far as the<br />

(slow flowing) Stream (or Backwater).'<br />

Otter's Hole is also a landmark in a curious charter<br />

(B.i216) attributed to Wylye, but referring as a fact to a<br />

narrow strip of land along the NW. side of Bemerton.<br />

The hole was at the extreme S. point of South Newton,<br />

on the river Wylye 1 fur. W. of the railway station at<br />

Wilton. The survey then goes NNW. up the Wylye for<br />

about 500 yds. to a point where a backwater comes in from<br />

the W. The modern <strong>by</strong>. follows <strong>this</strong> backwater, and not the<br />

main stream, for more than 1 m. ; and <strong>this</strong> backwater is<br />

the lacu of the charter.<br />

2. Fhonne andlang thaere Lace oth Pynding Mersc (in<br />

the other charter of S. Newton (see later) there is mention<br />

of a WindingFord at <strong>this</strong> point on the Wylye. But the <strong>read</strong>ing<br />

of the present charter seems to <strong>be</strong> correct) : ' Then along<br />

the Backwater as far as the Marsh of the Dam.'<br />

This marsh <strong>must</strong> have <strong>be</strong>en <strong>be</strong>tween the backwater and<br />

the Wylye about due W. of Folly Farm (OMi).<br />

3. Fhonne <strong>be</strong> thaes Hlinces Nither Lege oth thaet hit<br />

cymth to thaem Trthlande : ' Then <strong>by</strong> the Lower Edge of<br />

the Lynch till it comes to the Plough Land.'<br />

The lynch was obviously on the slope which comes down
