with the group of barrows which stands about 3 fur. NE.<br />

to the east of Colta's Barrow.'<br />

6. Of, etc. Stanes innan Seropes Bytt (for Pytt): ' From<br />

the Stone to Scrope's Pit.'<br />

7. Of, etc. <strong>be</strong> tweox ii Beorgas : ' From Scrope's Pit<br />

<strong>be</strong>tween the Two Barrows.'<br />

8. And thaer adun innan thone Ford : ' And then down<br />

to the Ford.'<br />

Scrope's Pit and the two barrows are landmarks of<br />

the previous charter. For the two barrows see 13 of <strong>that</strong><br />

charter. The pit <strong>must</strong> have <strong>be</strong>en on the half-mile of<br />

modern <strong>by</strong>. N. of the two barrows.<br />

The ford was where the ridgeway crosses the Kennett<br />

at East Kennett.<br />

Burg Gete : ' From the Ford to the Dark Brown Stone<br />

over against the front of the Camp Gate.'<br />

10. Of, etc. up ofer Seyfling Dune on thone Langan Η line<br />

eastewerdne : ' From the Stone up over the Down of the<br />

son of Scyfel to the Long Lynch on its east side.'<br />

11. Of, etc. on aenne Crundel: ' From the Lynch to a<br />

Quarry.'<br />

12. Of, etc. innan Seyt Hangran : ' From the Quarry<br />

to (Sheet ?) Hanging Wood.'<br />

13. Of, etc. on Mere Grafe easte werdne: 'From<br />

Sheet Hanger to the east side of Pond Grove.'<br />

14. Of, etc. on Ers Lege (<strong>read</strong> Hyrst Leage) : ' From<br />

Pond Grove to Wood Lea.'<br />

This brings the survey to 4 of the last charter, the name<br />

of which survives in <strong>that</strong> of Hursley Bottom <strong>be</strong>tween<br />

Pumphrey Wood (OMi) and West Wood (OMi). But<br />

unless the survey of <strong>this</strong> part of the grant S. of the river has<br />

<strong>be</strong>en taken against the clock, a most unlikely supposition<br />

in any case, and particularly in a case where the earlier<br />

part of the survey goes with the clock, it is most difficult,<br />

in fact impossible, to account for the fact <strong>that</strong> Seyt Hangra,<br />

which is a landmark of the previous charter (see 8), should
