Emotional Freedom Technique<br />

<strong>EFT</strong> Step 1: Awareness<br />

What is my top problem or concern that I will address today?<br />

Here some ideas to get you started….<br />

Am I feeling worried or stressed?<br />

Am I craving something?<br />

Am I feeling frustrated or sad or afraid?<br />

Is my body stiff or is there a physical pain?<br />

Am I concerned over money or my relationship?<br />

We measure physical and emotional unbalance with Subjective Units of Discomfort, or the SUDS<br />

scale. Giving a number to our discomfort helps us note how <strong>EFT</strong> is working for us. It is also<br />

helpful to have the client notice where in the body they feel this.<br />

SUDS Scale (Subjective Units of Discomfort)<br />

0 – 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 – 9 – 10<br />

Clear Point (Zero) Moderate Maximum<br />

For example, the questions above can be answered like so:<br />

Right now I have a physical pain in my right shoulder…………… measuring a 6<br />

Right now I’m so worried about my child’s wellbeing………………measuring a 9<br />

Right now I have a craving for chocolate/cigarettes…………………measuring a 5<br />

<strong>EFT</strong> Step 2: Set up phrase<br />

With your dominate hand tap with your index and middle finger on the<br />

side of your other hand, known as the Karate Chop Point. You continue to tap while repeating<br />

the set up phrase three times.<br />

“Even though I (awareness statement <strong>from</strong> step one) I love and accept myself”. I look at the<br />

set up phrase like a hug. We are acknowledging the problem while giving love and acceptance. In<br />

replace of love and accept you can use “I choose Peace” or “I forgive and ask for forgiveness” or<br />

create a powerful choice statement like, “I choose to be calm and confident anyway”. Be creative<br />

and use what words feel right for you. Remember to say this with enthusiasm.<br />

<strong>EFT</strong> Step 3 Reminder Phrase<br />

While saying the Reminder Phrase (what you wrote down on the line above in the set up phrase)<br />

you tap with your finger tips on each meridian points 6 to 8 times. Ex: “This headache”, “right<br />

shoulder pain”, “anger at” “frustration with” “anxiety at work” “this craving for” etc.<br />

Re access your SUDs level and repeat until intensity is reduced. After one or two rounds targeting<br />

and clearing the negative emotion you can switch over and tap empowerment statements like, “ I<br />

choose to be calm and confident”, “I accept and approve of myself”<br />
