This is a 'dirty' objective function in the sense that it is a max-min problem with<br />

varying critical points (the k-vector(s) for the critical frequencies may change dur-<br />

ing the optimization) and it may have several multiple eigenvalues. Interestingly,<br />

however, there is no need for a volume fraction constraint in the problem, since pure<br />

phase 1 will give no band gap and pure phase 2 will give no band gap (cf. figure 3a, b).<br />

Somewhere in between there must be a volume fraction that results in the biggest<br />

band gap.<br />
