participate in the redesign process and have meaningful roles in the <strong>on</strong>going management<br />

of the system. The central aim should be to create a system grounded in pers<strong>on</strong>-centered<br />

support principles, including c<strong>on</strong>sumer-managed, c<strong>on</strong>sumer-directed service alternatives,<br />

that offer real opportunities to link natural and other community resources with public supports<br />

to best meet the needs of the target populati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

These outcomes will be achieved <strong>on</strong>ly if the redesign process itself is informed by critical<br />

principles that ensure the coherent adaptati<strong>on</strong> of managed care approaches to l<strong>on</strong>g-term<br />

supports for people with developmental disabilities. It is essential that the organizati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

chosen to carry out this redesign be carefully selected so that all stakeholders can be<br />

c<strong>on</strong>fident that the resulting service system will operate in the best interests of individuals<br />

and families.<br />
