A Message from the Principal:
After a nine day trip to China with Justin Whiteford, Joe Cecere, and nine of our outstanding Tigers, it is good
to be back in America, Colorado, and Grand Junction. Hats off to Justin and the parents for making this trip a
reality. It is an experience we will remember for the rest of our lives! Despite the challenges that our country,
state, city, district, and school have, we have so much to be thankful for and this trip really emphasized that!
We hope everyone enjoyed the Spring Break and that all of our staff, faculty and students are ready to work
hard, stay focused on our main goal, increasing student achievement, and are ready to finish the school year
strong!
Before covering some fourth quarter information, we want to recognize some of our pre-break accomplish-
ments:
CDE sent us our dropout rate for 2010-2011, and we saw a reduction in our dropout rate for 9 th , 11 th , and
12 th graders and our overall school dropout rate, which is below the District and State rate. We did see a
slight increase in 10 th graders, black and homeless students and students with disabilities.
CDE sent us our graduation rate for 2010-2011, and we saw an increase in our rate from 77.8% to 81%,
surpassing the District’s and State’s graduation rate of 75.5% and 73.9%, respectively.
The Colorado Commission on Higher Education released its report on Remedial Education, and the report
revealed that 33.6% of our students attending college in Colorado needed some type of remedial support in
math, reading or writing. This is a slight increase in our percentage from last year, but it is the lowest rate in
the district.
GJHS was one of ten schools in the state selected for the next Colorado Legacy Schools Advanced
Placement Training and Incentive Program (APTIP) Cohort. This provides us a fully funded grant for a
three year period, 2012-2015.
Three hundred twenty eight (328) students earned a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 to 3.49 for the 2 nd
quarter of the school year.
Two hundred and five (205) students earned Honor Roll distinction with a 3.5 to 3.74 GPA for the 2 nd
quarter.
Three hundred eighty seven students earned High Honor Roll Distinction with a 3.75 or higher GPA for the
2 nd quarter.
Eighty six (86) students had a perfect attendance record for the 1 st Quarter. Sixty seven (67) students had a
perfect record for the 2 nd Quarter. Of those 67 students, 20 had a perfect record for both quarters.
Two hundred forty nine (249) students earned a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 to 3.49 for the 3 rd quarter
which is a progress reporting marking period for most of our students.
Fifty six (56) students earned Honor Roll distinction with a 3.5 to 3.74 GPA for the 3 rd quarter.
Three hundred thirty one (331) students earned High Honor Roll Distinction with a 3.75 or higher GPA for
the 3 rd quarter.
In February, 35 students and two math teachers attended the 14 th Math Extravaganza hosted by Colorado
Mesa University. This is the largest number of Tigers to attend this activity in the past five years. Math
Extravaganza is a full day event where high school students from across the region learned exciting new
concepts related to the concept of infinity. One sophomore lady Tiger scored a perfect 100% on the written
test, a male senior and sophomore placed second and three sophomores (two males and one female) and two
male freshmen finished in 3 rd place.
The Drama Department presented A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum to our community.
As always, if I missed someone or some activity, I apologize and hopefully we have addressed that success later
in this newsletter.
On behalf of the staff and faculty, congratulations to the above mentioned students, athletes, coaches, and
advisors as well as those mentioned in the inserts to this newsletter and all of our Tigers, teachers, coaches and
advisors who work hard every day to show their Tiger Pride and have made the 3 rd quarter a very successful
part of our school year.
Speaking of the school year, we have less than nine weeks to finish out the school year on even a higher level of
success.
The 4 th quarter is one of our busier of the year beginning with TCAP/CSAP Testing beginning on Tuesday,
respectively. Please see the TCAP/CSAP Calendar insert for more specific information on these test dates. The
Superintendents Scholars Luncheon is scheduled for Monday, April 16, 2012.
On Tuesday, April 24, the juniors will be administered the ACT Test. Our Annual Tiger Tour for incoming 9 th
for underclassmen start on Tuesday, May 22 and runs thru Thursday, May 24. This is the end of the semester
and the last day for students.
Until our next newsletter, I leave with this thought by Dan Green, Founder Finish Strong, LLC.
Kindles in the Classroom
On behalf of the students who participate in and benefit from our reading, English Language Learning, and
STRIVE Programs, we would like to thank Mike Sidanycz from Safeway and Norm Franke from Alpine
Bank for their generous donations of $3,500 and $4,000, respectively, which were used to purchase Kindle
Touch e-readers. E-readers are one of the premier reading learning tools of the 21 st Century. Kindles provide
our students support in a variety of ways. Students benefit from support features including the ability to enlarge
font size, get immediate access to dictionary definitions of difficult vocabulary, and listen to curriculum
required text beyond their reading level.
ACT Update
The state required ACT exam at GJHS is scheduled for April 24, 2012.
All Juniors must pre-register for the exam. Registration will be held on March 28 at 9:30. Registration
takes approximately 2 hours! This exam is a graduation requirement so please make sure you come to
registration. Your score can be reported to four institutions free of charge. Please decide where you would
like ACT to send your scores prior to registration. If you would like your scores reported to the NCAA
Clearinghouse you must indicate this on your registration with a 9999 code.
On April 24, all juniors should report to the high school not later than 7:00. The test will begin promptly
at 7:25 a.m. and run through 12:00 noon. All students are required to present an acceptable form of
identification or be personally recognized (face-to-face) by a school faculty member. Since not all of our
faculty members will be able to recognize every junior in the class, all juniors must be prepared to present
an acceptable form of identification. Acceptable forms of identification include: a photo ID (passport,
current driver’s license or school ID card), and school identification letter with a raised or ink school logo
and individually completed and signed in ink by a counselor or administrator. School identification letters
will be collected and forwarded to ACT with the test roster for each applicable test room. Students
without acceptable ID may be admitted only if they are personally recognized, face-to-face, by a school
faculty member who is not a relative and whose initials must be printed legibly beside the student’s name
on the roster.
This year students may bring snacks and beverages into the test room but may consume them only outside
the test room during break.
As always, students must not use or access any electronic devise (including cell phones or media
players) at any time while in the test room.
GJHS will offer all interested juniors the opportunity to take a practice test to help students prepare for
this challenging exam. Practice exams are April 3 and 4 from 12:30 to 3:30. The cost of the practice exam
is $10. Students who are interested in the practice exam may pick up a registration form in the main
office or in the counseling office. Please return the registration form along with $10 to Kathy Rigg in the
main office before April 2. The practice test will be administered in Room 110.
Course Registration and
Changes to Junior English in 2012 - 2013
Registration at Grand Junction High School has been in full swing since January! Students have done an
amazing job of selecting their course requests for next year's schedules and helping to enter their requests
into the system during advisory so that a Master Schedule can be created. Over the next several weeks we
will be reviewing all of the course selections to insure that we develop a master schedule that represents
our best efforts at bringing teachers, students, facilities and materials together for the greatest possible
effectiveness. Our major goals this year are to insure that student course selections are satisfied, multiple
section courses are balanced, and teacher requests are satisfied. The primary focus of this process is to
reduce student course conflicts while achieving good multiple section course balance. Some courses may
be deleted if the number of students selecting the course is insufficient to warrant committing teacher
resources to the class. In these situations, students will be contacted and given the opportunity to sign up
for another class.
In addition, a few changes will be made to the junior English course requests. In the past, we have had
several levels of Composition 11 to offer students. Based on the District’s goal to make sure that every
student receives a guaranteed, viable curriculum that includes the new national and state standards, the
various levels of Composition 11, such as the class titled "College Prep Composition/Speech", have been
eliminated. The District English Language Arts (ELA) Team has developed a pacing guide that
incorporates the new state standards into one junior level course. Consequently, students entering a junior
English course will be scheduled for the course "Composition 11/Speech." AP English Language is an
option for juniors. Since the College Board controls the curriculum for this course, the curriculum and
recommended pacing guide will not be changed.
When students receive their schedules during the fall Check-In, they will notice that their junior level
English will be reflected as "Composition 11/Speech" unless they are taking AP English Language. If
students feel like the change affects them, and they would like to move to an AP English Language course
instead, an appointment can be made with one of the GJHS counselors to adjust the course
requests. Students needing to grade replace "College Prep Composition/Speech" should also be aware
that they can use "Composition 11/Speech" for the grade replacement.
Tigers Roarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Tigers Visit China
Over the Spring Break, Mr. Justin Whiteford, Social Studies Teacher, Mr. Jon Bilbo, Principal, and
Mr. Joe Cecere, parent, travelled to China with nine of our outstanding Tigers. The Tigers travelling to
China included: Junior Emma McNulty, Sophomores Matt Erickson, Maddie Stewart, and Katie
Whiteside, and freshmen Gabrielle Cecere, Jordan Hahn, Logan Joyce, Shannon Reeve, and Nicole
Troester. On Wednesday, March 7, the group drove to and stayed in Denver for an early flight out the
next day to San Francisco and then a 12 hour flight to the capital city of Beijing. While in Beijing the
group visited the Summer Palace; Tiananmen Square, with The Great Hall of People, The Museum of the
Chinese History, and the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall; the Forbidden City, to include the Temple of
Heaven- a splendid example of the Ming Dynasty architecture; the Great Wall at Badaling, and the
Olympic Stadium. The group also watched The King of Ever Chinese Musical and consumed one of
Beijing’s local favorites, Peking Duck. Upon leaving Beijing, the group took a two hour flight west to
Xian, argued by many to be near the start of the fabled Chinese Silk Road. While in Xian, the group
visited the museum that houses Emperor Qin’s Army of Terra-Cotta warriors and the Big Wild Goose
Pagoda. After a lesson of Tai Chi, the students and Mr. Whiteford rode around the city on bikes atop the
historic city walls. Finally, the group flew to Shanghai and then travelled on the world’s fastest train (300
mph) from the airport to the downtown area, near our hotel. In Shanghai, the group watched China’s
foremost Chinese acrobatic show, and visited the Shanghai World Financial Center, the Jade Buddha
Temple, and Yu Yuan Garden. With all that said, they were most excited about spending three hours
touring a local middle school—where they participated in classes, met the principal and teachers, and even
established pens pals that they can use to collaborate on future projects. All and all, the trip was
outstanding and with the momentum, Mr. Whiteford looks forward to taking another large group next
year…we will keep you posted.
