Short <strong>Poems</strong> from Manuscripts, circa 1900 – 1901<br />

<strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Aurobindo</strong> wrote these fourteen poems in the notebook he used<br />

also for Uloupie and the above sonnets. He wrote the heading “Miscellaneous”<br />

above the poems. They are arranged here in the order in<br />

which they appear in <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Aurobindo</strong>’s notebook.<br />

The Spring Child. 1900. As recorded in the subtitle, this poem was<br />

written for <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Aurobindo</strong>’s cousin Basanti Mitra, who was born on<br />

9 Jyestha 1292 (22 May 1886). The title and opening of the poem<br />

involve a play on the Bengali word bāsantī, which means “vernal”,<br />

“of the spring”.<br />
