The Orders of St John Care Trust was established in 1991 as a not for profit
Charitable Trust providing long-term residential, dementia and nursing care,
together with intermediate and day care. It is the second largest not for profit
care provider in the UK currently operating 74 homes across Lincolnshire,
Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire – caring for approximately 3,250
residents and employing over 3,500 staff.
We have the following 16 care homes across Lincolnshire specialising in the
provision of long term residential, dementia and nursing care, together with
intermediate and day care.

Today many older
people are leading
active, healthy lives
that allow them to be
independent for longer.
Some people are able
to continue to live in
their own home, with
the help of health and
social care support.
Examples of schemes
and services that aid
independent living are
listed later on.
However, for some
older people the best
option for their
future care and safety
is to move into a
care home.
This could be due
to illness, injury
or frailty.
Younger adults with
a mental illness or
disability may also
require similar
support services.
We hope this booklet
will help to explain
about care homes,
as well as other
support for people
who can and want to
live independently.
When looking for a care
home, the registration
category should be checked
with CSCI and the home.

Assessments
The County Council is
responsible for arranging a place
in a care home for people who
may need financial support from
the local authority.
The first thing you should do
is contact us to arrange an
assessment of your needs.
In Lincolnshire we are working
towards a single unified
assessment. This will identify
all of a person's needs in one
process - saving time, effort,
worry and duplication.
Someone from the council
will visit you to discuss your
personal situation: your state
of health, how you manage at
home, and what sort of help you
think you need.
They will also explain about the
cost of your care and whether
you will have to pay anything
towards it.
This depends on your financial
situation and is explained in
further detail later on.
You may want to have a
friend of relative with you
during the assessment.
This is also an opportunity for
you to say what you want,
such as the location of the
home, its facilities and other
issues such as whether you can
keep your pet.
Care homes
All registered care homes offer a safe environment for people to live
in, with personal care if you need it, such as washing, dressing and
going to the toilet.
However, if you are extremely frail or have a medical condition
or illness, you will probably need to look for a care home which
provides nursing care, which should have a qualified nurse on duty
24 hours a day.
We call these care homes with nursing.
All care homes should offer a secure and comfortable environment,
with the opportunity to enjoy the company of other people.
Many provide leisure and recreational opportunities that help to
keep mind and body active.
Homes can be run by local councils, health organisations, voluntary
groups or private individuals and companies.
Making the move
Once the local authority has
agreed that you need to go into
a care home, you should have
some choice about which home
you move to.
You may visit several homes
before deciding which one is
right for you.
If you are unable to visit homes
yourself, ask somebody you trust
to do it on your behalf and tell
you what they found.
Don't be afraid to ask lots of
questions - if you can, talk to
people who already live in the
home to find out what it is like.
You might want to find out
about the meals, local facilities,
rules for visitors, activities,
room arrangements, and whether
the home will respect your
religious beliefs.
Some care homes make small
additional charges for services
such as hairdressing, chiropody,
certain brand toiletries and
newspapers. To find out what is
included in care home charges,
you should speak to the home
manager or your social worker.

You should be able to move
to the home of your choice as
long as:
■ it is suitable for your
assessed needs
■ it does not cost any more
than the local authority would
normally expect to pay
■ there are places available in
your preferred home
■ the home has signed a contract
with the local authority
If you want to move to a
home that does cost more
than the authority would
normally pay, somebody else,
usually a relative, can make up
the difference.
If you can afford to pay for
a place in a home yourself,
you have no restrictions
when choosing a home
although you may still find
a council assessment of your
needs helpful.
However, you should remember
that you may need help with
paying your fees in the future.
The local authority may not
agree to fund the home of your
choice if it costs more than they
would normally pay.

Paying for your care
The amount you will pay towards your
care depends on how much you have in
income and savings.
If you have more than £22,250 in
savings, you will have to pay full fees
for the home.
If you own your own home and
remain in care as a permanent resident,
you will usually have to sell it to pay
the fees.
Under deferred payments, you do not
have to sell your home immediately.
The local authority can give you an
interest-free loan that is claimed back
when your property is eventually sold.
Sometimes you will not have to sell
your home if people continue to live
there permanently. This includes your
husband, wife, unmarried partner, close
relatives over the age of 60 or under
the age of 16, vulnerable relatives
under the age of 60, and carers.
If you have less than £22,250 in
savings - or your savings drop to this
level - your income and the savings
you have left will be considered when
working out how much you will pay
towards home fees.
Savings below £13,500 are ignored
altogether, while savings of £13,500
to £22,250 are converted into a
weekly income.
Any state benefits you receive are
taken into account when working out
what you should pay.
The local authority must always leave
you with some money to spend as
you wish each week – the Government
has set the current minimum amount
at £21.15.
If you are going into a nursing home,
your needs will be assessed by an
NHS nurse.
When the local authority assesses
how much you will pay, they will take
account of any financial contributions
you are entitled to for nursing care.

Helping people to live at home
Wherever possible, we prefer to help people to live at home
independently with a care support package.
Often known as community care, services might include:
■ home support
- help with personal care, such as washing and dressing
■ community meals
- supplied frozen to reheat yourself
■ day services
- available in care homes or community centres
■ respite care
- residential care, or care provided in your own home, to
give you or your carer a break
■ housing adaptations
- information about equipment and adaptations to make it
easier for you to continue to live in your own home
■ independent living schemes
- Direct Payments allows you to buy in the care you need
for daily independent living, such as personal care, cooking
and cleaning
■ sheltered housing - sometimes with extra support to enable
independent living
To decide what sort of help you need, the local authority will
carry out a community care assessment and arrange a care plan.
This sets out what services will be provided to help you manage
at home.
Many people can be involved in arranging a care plan, but it
is important that you and anyone who is caring for you takes
part in the discussions. Your views and wishes should always be
taken into account.
It is likely that the local authority will make a charge for
services it provides, based on your financial circumstances.
You should be given clear information about what you can
expect to pay.
For home care services, Lincolnshire has a charging policy based
on the Fairer Charging guidance issued by the Department of
Health in September 2003.
The system has a maximum charge of £123 a week and an
hourly rate of £10.25. People with savings over £22,250 will pay
up to the maximum charge.

Care plans may change if your needs change, leading to another
assessment which is often called a review.

Direct Payments
Direct Payments are a way for people to have more control
over the service they receive. People who are eligible
for services (day care, personal care, respite care and
equipment and adaptations) can opt to receive the money
for the service and purchase it themselves.
In this way they can choose the exact service they want,
when they want it and who provides it.
There are two types of Direct Payments: one off payments
for single periods of respite care, equipment and small
scale adaptations to property and ongoing Direct Payments
for care services.
Customers can also 'mix and match' and have some of
their support provided by the council and take some as a
direct payment. Direct Payments are not a Social Security
benefit, will not affect any means-tested benefit and are
not taxable.
The Council provide a support agency to help people
manage their Direct Payments. Penderels Trust offers a
wide range of support in; discussing options for managing
care needs, finding care providers, employment and
financial management.
The following people are eligible for Direct Payments
■ People over 16 years of age who have been assessed as
eligible for Community Care Services;
■ Carers of people who have been assessed as being
eligible for Community Care Services, including young
people aged sixteen and seventeen who are carers;
■ Young people with a disability aged sixteen
and seventeen;

■ People having parental responsibility for a child
with disabilities;
■ Disabled people with parental responsibility for a child;
People can have as much help as they need to manage
their Direct Payments.
Direct Payments can cover the following services:
■ Personal care needs (personal care includes washing,
showering, dressing, and assistance with toileting,
transfer and moving)
■ Support with daily living activities - this could be
attending a centre or going out and about
■ Short term breaks
■ Equipment and adaptations that would otherwise have
been provided by the council
Not everything can be paid for from the Direct Payments
scheme, for example long term residential and nursing care,
food, heating costs and accommodation costs including
rent etc are not eligible.
Some social care services, for example home support, may
be eligible for charging and these charges would still apply
if the service is delivered through Direct Payments.
More information on charges for services can be obtained
from the council. There is no charge for an assessment or
for being seen by a social worker or occupational therapist.
An assessment is needed before Direct Payments can be
agreed. If anyone is interested in finding out more about
Direct Payments then they should either contact their

Intermediate care
Intermediate care aims to help you
remain independent at home
wherever possible.
It works by providing you with a
programme of care to rehabilitate
and re-able you in activities you
find difficult.
Intermediate care aims to:
■ prevent unnecessary admission to
hospital or long term care
■ enable someone to come home from
hospital earlier than would normally
be expected
■ help prevent further deterioration
■ promote independence
Intermediate care is available to people
who meet set criteria.
It can last from 24 hours up to six
weeks, depending on individual need,
and takes place in someone’s home or
an intermediate care bed in a hospital
or care home.
The Commission for Social
Care Inspection
The Commission for Social Care Inspection
is an independent public body that
registers and inspects care homes and
domiciliary care services.
It aims to ensure consistent quality
of service, improve the level of
protection for vulnerable people, and
make sure care services meet national
minimum standards and regulations set
by the Government.

Comments and complaints
We want you to be completely satisfied with our
services, but to ensure this we need to know what
you think.
The Complaints Officer at Lincolnshire County
Council welcomes everything you have to say.
They will listen to your ideas and suggestions,
responding to any specific issues you raise.
We prefer wherever possible to resolve issues
quickly by talking to local managers.
However, we have a full complaints procedure that
ends with an independent panel review of how your
complaint was handled.

NHFA - Moving into a care home?
The new Wellbeing Residential homes at Spalding and Bourne could be just what you are looking
for, providing a friendly, welcoming and stimulating environment.
Elegant 1920s-built Southernwood House, with its beautiful half-acre garden, was taken over in
2006. It is situated close to the town centre on Matmore Gate, Spalding.
It offers 20 single rooms and two doubles, all with washbasins and many with ensuite facilities, and
residents are encouraged to use the communal two dining rooms, two lounges and conservatory.
Chevington House at Bourne became a Wellbeing home a year later and its original Edwardian core
has been extended over the years so today it accommodates ten single and three double rooms,
three of which have ensuite facilities.
It is also blessed with a lovely garden of more than half an acre, one large lounge and a dining
room with conservatory.
Both these local Wellbeing homes offer freshly-cooked food made from fresh ingredients, served in
the dining rooms or in the rooms of residents who choose it.
Regular outings for shopping and attending local events are facilitated and there is always something
going on including bingo, cinema, reminiscence and quiz nights.
At both homes residents can have their own TVs and telephones in their rooms and have access to
computers, the Internet and even video calling facilities. For anyone who is not already computer
literate, instruction is available to get you started.

Our 26-bedded residential carehome is set in the picturesque and quite village
of Heckington overlooking rolling open countryside and breathtaking sceneries.
The home was purpose built in February 1989 and was originally an 18 bed
extension of an original detached house. In 1995 it was extended and a further
10 bedrooms were added. Greenacres is built entirely on one level and the
needs of our clients are catered for in the surroundings and the interior design
of the buildings. Initially the needs of the clients were entirely residential,
however we now cater for High Dependency One and Two categories, which
allows us to admit clients who require a higher level of care due to mental
health, dementia needs.

unexpectedly we will do our best to accommodate you for a viewing.

An 18th century building on the most part, with a recent extension (The Lodge) that
has been tastefully renovated. Registered for 33 residential and persons with dementia,
accommodation consists of mainly single rooms with the majority en-suite, with a beautiful
dining room and extensive grounds.
Maria Helena Care recently acquired new ownership and new management, the new
management has previously been involved in the home for several years. Maria Helena Care
is run for the comfort of the residents and a pleasant place to work for all staff.
All meals are prepared freshly on the premises daily; all laundry is done on site, activities are
provided on a regular basis as well as outside entertainers, barbeques, strawberry teas etc. A
mobile hairdresser and chiropodist visits regularly. GP’s, dentists, District Nurses etc are also
available to all residents.
Our aim is to provide a friendly, homely atmosphere, free from institutional ideas, making
everyone welcome from the moment they arrive. Residents should feel as happy and
contented as if they were in their own home. The Management and staff endeavour to
encourage residents to remain as independent as possible and to remain as individuals. Any
hobbies and interests are encouraged where possible and assistance in taking up new ones.

St. John’s is a purpose built, single
storey building, designed specifically
for the care of 37 elderly, mentally
infirm residents. It opened in
January 1992
