ASTON MARTIN
RAPIDE
ITS TAKE ON the emerging 4-door coupe sector of the supercar
market is likely to set a high benchmark that competing
manufacturers will find difficult to match.
Over recent years, the trend for diversification has spread
through the upper echelons of the global car market like wildfire.
We’ve seen BMW, Audi and Mercedes branch out into existing
markets such as 4x4s, MPVs and small cars as well as creating a
myriad of their own product niches, but top end prestige brands
have been at it too. Porsche brought us the Cayenne 4x4, and more
recently the Panamera four-door, while Bentley has enjoyed success
with its Continental GT sportscars. It is in this competitive climate
that Aston Martin has developed the Rapide, its first production
four-door coupe since the Lagonda ceased production back in 1989.
The Rapide’s virtuoso soundtrack is supplied courtesy of the
famous Aston V12, a six-litre 470 bhp unit that is front-mounted,
but positioned as far rearward as possible in the interests of weight
8 debutesq
The interior is pure Aston
Martin with hand-stitched
leather, walnut trim and
Iridium Silver detailing
As you would expect from one of Britain’s
most iconic brands, the Aston Martin
Rapide is no ordinary sports car…
distribution – which, for those who like their stats, has been
refined to a near-perfect 51:49.
In true Aston Martin style, power is dispensed through the rear
wheels and the suspension set-up is that of a thoroughbred sports
car with double wishbones all round. Adding credence to the car’s
long range cruising abilities is the Adaptive Damping System which
automatically adjusts the suspension settings according to road
conditions and driving style. Ease off and it relaxes to improve
comfort but press on and everything gets taut and more responsive.
All of the engines vast power is more than equalled by the Rapide’s
powerful and innovative dual cast brake discs, fashioned from
aluminium and cast iron, combining the former’s light weight with
the durability and heat resistant qualities of the latter. They’re big
ones too, 390mm at the front and 360mm at the rear.
Inside, a high centre console runs through the cabin, effectively
splitting it into four separate cockpits. There’s an exquisite leather-
ound figure-hugging sports seat waiting for each occupant and
although space will be tight in the rear for the tallest, most adults
will fit comfortably. The interior is pure Aston Martin with
hand-stitched leather, walnut trim and Iridium Silver detailing.
Everything has been thought of to ensure that each of the four
passengers travel in ultimate comfort, for example, at high speeds
the windows automatically move further up into their frames to
prevent any wind noise from diluting the cabins ambience while
each rear-seat passenger can tailor the temperature of their cabin
space with an individual air-conditioning system.
As you’d expect with such a prestigious marque, the Rapide
comes with the finest specification. Electric heated seats, a hard disc
satellite navigation system and a stunning bespoke Bang & Olufsen
BeoSound audio system are amongst the highlights. There’s even
an Aston Martin umbrella mounted in the boot. For those looking
to add the finishing touch to their Rapide, the options list includes
refinements such as a rear seat entertainment system with a 6-disc
DVD player and screens in the front seat backs. There are also
a selection of different wood finishes for the interior trim and
a choice of 20” wheels to replace the standard 19"s.
On the passenger safety front, there are seatbelt pretensioners
and a full complement of eight airbags including individual
head protection airbags for those in the rear seats. There’s
also the usual array of electronic aids you’d expect in a car of
this calibre with Hydraulic Brake Assist and Dynamic Stability
Control being key examples.
Aston Martin didn’t try to break their mould when creating
their first four-door car in more than two decades. They simply
took all of the passion, expertise and craftsmanship they have
gained manufacturing some of the world’s most desirable sports
cars and applied it to the Rapide. And it turns out to be exactly how
you would imagine a four-door Aston might be; Thunderous V12,
beautifully hand crafted cabin, timeless elegant looks. At its heart,
it’s a true sports car with space for the family rather than an attempt
to muscle in on the luxury saloon market and as such, it is peerless.
For over 20 years, Murray Motor Company in Edinburgh has
been proud to be Scotland’s national Aston Martin dealership,
providing a consistently excellent standard of service to both sales
and service customers the length and breadth of the country. For
ROLLS-ROYCE
GHOST
ROLLS-ROYCE has more experience in this particular field than
any other manufacturer. The development process for its vehicles
traditionally begins with this lofty goal in mind, which is why
throughout the last century, the Spirit of Ecstasy has frequently
been found perched on the bonnet of some of the greatest fourwheeled
conveyances around.
The particular variant in question here is the Ghost, the
marque’s newest model, which is considered to be a more
compact Rolls-Royce – although as it is easily one of the largest
and mort impressive cars to be seen on the road today, you
could only call it that when viewed alongside its even more
substantial stablemate, the Phantom.
Taking twenty days to complete an individual vehicle, each
Ghost is the culmination of the labours of 60 supremely skilled
craftsmen and women, each with their own dedicated areas
of expertise. In the era of the automated production line, this
“
Each Ghost is the culmination of the labours
of 60 supremely skilled craftsmen and women
How do you go about crafting
the finest motorcar in the world?
”
highly labour intensive manufacturing process is a throwback
to a different age of motoring, but it is an incredible testament to
Rolls-Royce and their pursuit of perfection in everything they do.
In the Ghost, the fabled Rolls-Royce ride and refinement is
provided thanks to a full air-suspension system with damping
levels which are continuously adjusted by the car’s electronics
to suit the road surface and the driving style. The system is
sensitive to such minute inputs that it can detect changes in the
car’s weight distribution caused by extra luggage in the boot, or
a rear-seat passenger moving to the opposite side of the vehicle
and can compensate accordingly. There’s a whole catalogue of
additional electronic driving aids designed to maximise stability
and composure even when the Ghost is pushed to its not
inconsiderable limits. For simplicity’s sake, Rolls Royce groups them
all together under the banner of ‘Integrated Chassis Management’.
Even the Ghost’s sophisticated stability and traction control
systems will be working full steam once its mighty engine is
unleashed; a twin turbo V12 with a 6.6-litre capacity, it provides
monumental reserves of torque granting it with truly effortless
acceleration. There’s a maximum of 563bhp on tap at 5,250rpm but
it’s the 780Nm of torque from just 1,500rpm that firmly establishes
the Ghost’s incredible performance. A perfect example of this
power at work can be seen when introducing the finely crafted
throttle pedal to the luxurious lambs wool carpet, bear in mind
that un-laden, a Ghost weighs the best part of 2,500kg and you
will be flabbergasted as the eight speed ZF gearbox blurs through
the gears and past 60mph in a supercar-beating 4.7 seconds.
Inside, it is no surprise to find that the Ghost is equipped
to an unimpeachably high standard with only the finest wood,
leather and sublimely polished metal throughout. A plethora of
features and finishes can be chosen to ensure that each Ghost
is as individual as its owner. On approach, the clever keyless
entry system detects the key fob and will unlock the doors. Once
inside, the driver has the option to operate ancillary functions
using voice commands, or with the central controller. A full array
of cameras is positioned around the vehicle’s extremities giving
complete external view of the car and helping with manoeuvres
or enhancing visibility at junctions. In addition, a night vision
camera in the grille can detect and warn of pedestrians on
the road ahead, while active cruise control can maintain
a set distance to the car in front and high beam assistance
intelligently dips the headlights when a car approaches.
Smaller and sportier than the imperious Phantom, the
Ghost achieves that perfect blend of ultimate refinement,
effortless performance and cutting-edge technology that only a
Rolls-Royce can deliver. If you’re looking for the world’s finest
motorcar, there is no more obvious place to start. Rolls-Royce
simply builds vehicles that exist on a completely different plane
to other car makers. In this sense, the Ghost isn’t unusual; it is
simply the modern expression of one manufacturers ongoing
quest for motoring perfection and as such it is, well, perfect.
Murray Motor Company have been Scotland’s premier Rolls-
Royce sales and service franchisee for over 20 years and are proud to
continue representing the Spirit of Ecstasy in the 21st Century. The
stunning Ghost is available to view now from their state-of-the-art
Rolls-Royce showroom on Bankhead Drive, Sighthill, Edinburgh.
Another way to access financial markets
CFD trading is becoming increasingly popular among investors looking to profit from
market movements without tying up capital. This article explores the nature of CFDs
and how they differ from other, more traditional investments.
A CFD (or Contract for Difference) is an agreement
to exchange the difference in value of a particular
instrument between the time at which the contract
is opened and the time at which it is closed.
Doing this allows you to trade on a huge range of
markets, without physically purchasing the
underlying instrument. For example, you could
trade on the price of Crude Oil without actually
purchasing barrels of oil, or on the price of a
specific stock without buying or selling any actual
shares.
A flexible option
CFDs can be used to trade an extremely wide
range of financial products, so they are helpful if
you want to start dealing across a large crosssection
of the market. They also offer a level of
flexibility that many other investments cannot. For
example, shorting markets can be inconvenient
and expensive, but CFDs allow you to buy or sell
at the quoted price to profit from rising or falling
markets.
Another advantage is that if you have an interest
in shares, the level of Wall Street, the price of oil
and the exchange rate of the dollar against the
euro, you can deal all of these markets with one
CFD provider on one account.
Further, because CFDs aren’t a physical asset, they
do not incur any stamp duty. And, in the case of
Share CFD trading, the process is very similar to
normal share dealing, because you deal at the
cash price of the share, and pay a commission
which is calculated as a percentage of the value of
the transaction.
Trade on margin
All CFDs are traded on margin. When you place a
trade, you put up a deposit, or margin, rather than
the full value of the position. Typically, this would
start from just 5%, allowing you to trade up to 20
times your initial capital.
Later, when you come to close your position, the
difference between your opening contract value
and your closing contract value is realised. So, just
as with buying shares or trading futures, the
degree to which you are correct in your CFD
trading affects how much you make or lose.
What are the risks?
Like any investment products, CFD trading has its
risky side. In particular, geared products like CFDs
can result in losses that exceed your margin.
Before you start trading, it is important to
appreciate that the amount you could lose relative
to your initial investment is greater for geared
products than for non-geared products. Helpfully,
most CFD product ranges include special order
types, such as Stops and Limits, to help you
manage your risk exposure.
Overall, CFDs can be a useful way to make the
most effective use of your investment capital while
experiencing the excitement of a variety of world
markets.
Why IG Markets?
IG Markets is a global leader in CFDs, delivering an
In April 2008, Hamilton & Inches was one of the
first retailers to proudly take on emerging watch
company Bremont and their entire range of robust
pilot’s watches. With the tagline “tested beyond
endurance” brothers Nick and Giles English have
excelled at making Bremont one of the most
anticipated and talked about brands to emerge for
years. Incredibly precise and durable, these
watches are called upon to survive situations that
most people only read about.
With hardy yet elegant English design, teamed
with precise Swiss movements and subjected to a
rigorous and practically fanatical testing schedule,
these are high quality time pieces that Hamilton &
Inches is proud to have as part of our brand line
This year is bringing two new product launches
for Bremont. First, the Supermarine Descent
Limited Edition (407 pieces only) is a black DLC
coated marine watch due for release in July of this
year. The piece will be a sturdy and iconic tribute
to British Supermarine S6B Schneider Trophy
Seaplane. It reached an incredible top speed of
407 miles an hour in 1931 and was piloted by
George Stainforth. It was an unbelievable
accomplishment.
Secondly, Bremont has introduced its newest
watch for pilots, the U2. Created for the pilots of
the U2 spy plane and tested at an outrageous
100,000 ft, the watches are to be given to the
actual U2 squadron. Official images of Bremont’s
newest creation have now been released and an
exclusive sneak peak is available to view at
will be available for public sale. One very
Traditionally the art market lags 18 months
seems to be bucking that trend as cash rich
individuals anticipate global inflation and put
The top ten percent of the art market still
remains strong. Signature pieces are still holding
value making it a great time to buy. And some
areas of the art market remain as buoyant as
Contemporary has borne the brunt. Old Masters
to know an area of the market. Learn which
artists of a certain period or genre are considered
the best; make sure the subject is typical of that
artist and from a good period of their career.
The condition of a picture, especially where Old
