A new visual identity and branding system
As the MBL advances strategically, we have adopted a new visual identity
and branding program to reinforce brand awareness and support positive
perceptions of the MBL. Key to this initiative is an integrated, coordinated
and consistent system for identifying the MBL through our various forms of
communications.
The basic visual identity for the MBL is a typographic signature composed
of three elements – a monogram (“MBL”) and a descriptor line (“Biological
Discovery in Woods Hole”), and a subscript line referencing the legacy (Founded
in 1888 as the Marine Biological Laboratory).
The second primary component of the visual identity is the existing seal, used in
a more contemporary way than previously. The seal is a unique, historic icon and
conveys the proud legacy of the MBL.
The branding system establishes standards, but it also permits flexibility and
encourages imaginative applications within the context of the overall system.
We are confident that our branding initiative and the communications program
of which it is a part will strengthen the recognition of the MBL among our
stakeholder groups, enhance our ability to recruit outstanding talent, and
support philanthropy.
We need the MBL community’s cooperation to make this initiative successful.

Using this Manual

The MBL brand identity manual has been
developed as an interactive, electronic manual
for use by anyone requiring information
regarding the use and implementation of the
MBL visual identity.
The standards are arranged so one may
navigate to a particular topic as required.
Electronic reproducible artwork is provided for
certain items described in this manual; in these
cases, links are provided to access the artwork.
If desired, the manual may be output as a
printed document. The pages have been
formatted for printing directly to standard
8.5x11 paper, in landscape orientation.

The MBL Signature
The visual device providing the foundation for
the MBL visual identity / branding program is
the MBL typographic signature. This consists of
three component parts: the MBL typographic
monogram, the descriptor line and the
subscript. The most basic configuration for these
components is shown here. The MBL type and
descriptor line should always be used in the
defined configuration and the subscript has
several optional uses.
The second primary component of the visual
identity is the original MBL seal. This is
intended to be used in a highly flexible way in
conjunction with the typographic signature and
is described on page 1.3
The basic typographic signature components
are distinctive graphic devices and should never
be redrawn. Reproducible artwork in a variety
of file formats is available and should always
by employed. The subscript may be typeset and
specifications are provided.

surrounding the MBL indicated
by the “X” is a square and
should define a space for the
MBL. This space should not
contain other graphics. It may
be simply negative space, used
as a color field or contain a
portion of the original seal.
These options are demonstrated
through these standards.
Use
The signature may be used in
a field of color, contrasting to
the background. Positioning is
preferably in the upper left of
a particular format. When used
within a color field as shown,
the Separator Rule should be
eliminated.

The MBL Seal
The MBL seal is a unique, historic graphic
device, that is well recognized. The new identity
program uses this seal as an integral component
of the system but in a contemporary, flexible
and dynamic way. The seal should be used in all
applications of the branding program with the
exception of internal, low-quality reproduction
items, such as business forms and materials
intended for photocopy reproduction.
Basic guidelines for use of the seal are:
• The scale of the seal should be used large
relative to the format.
• The seal should always be “cropped” on at
least one edge.
• The seal should always be reproduced as a
low contrast image. This is most easily
achieved in print as a screen value.
• There is no set positioning for the seal, it
should be considered a dynamic device and its
varying usage contributes to the flexibility of
the system.
• The seal best functions when used in a direct
graphic relationship with the basic signature.

Stationery System
Every item of visual communication produced
by the MBL is a projection of our brand identity.
The cohesion and consistency projected by these
items helps convey the sense of excellence and
professionalism that is characteristic of
the MBL.
The stationery is a vital component of this
external brand building. Stationery formats have
been developed to address a range of needs and
situations. This system establishes a consistent
presentation and is applicable to all users within
the MBL community.
Use standards are provided to guide the
placement of a letter on a letterhead.
See page 4.2.
The following pages provide examples of the
various types of letterheads and other stationery
items available to members of the MBL
community. Reproducible artwork is available
for all items. Orders for printed materials may
be placed through the Procurement Office (ext.
7449).

Typing
The positioning of a letter on the letterhead is
an integral part of the letterhead design. Typing
guidelines shown here and are applicable to
all versions of the MBL letterhead included in
the system. The following basic use guidelines
should be followed:
• The left margin is 1 1/2” and always aligns
with the separator rule between the MBL
typographic monogram and the descriptor
line.
• The right margin may vary between 1/2” and
3/4” to accommodate letters of varying
length or user’s preference. A short letter
will appear more balanced with a wider right
margin, while longer letters will make best
use of space with a narrower margin. If
a letter is too long to fit on a page with the
narrower margin, a second sheet should be
used. The left margin should never be altered
to accommodate longer letters.
• The date and address block should begin
1 1/2” down from the top of the letterhead,
and a minimum bottom margin of 3/4” should
be allowed.
• The same margins should be used for any
additional pages required.
• The preferred type font is Times Roman.
• Note the subscript type line is positioned at
the bottom of the sheet in alignment with the
descriptor line.

Publications System
Printed materials directed toward our donors,
community, general public and professional
colleagues collectively project the image of
the MBL. It is important, therefore, that they
maintain a presentation consistent with our
overall branding strategy.
Communications should convey a cohesive
image, whether they emanate from the
Communications Office or other areas of the
organization. The presentation style should
project a consistent, unified, and, above all,
professional look and feel.
The objective of these publication standards
is to establish guidelines and a framework
for developing, designing and producing
communications materials that project our
image, yet allow a high degree of flexibility to
respond to particular needs and production
criteria.
Cohesion throughout the publications system
is achieved through a palette of graphic
components. These include the use of the
MBL signature, typefonts, colors and formats
that share a size system and a basic grid
structure. By utilizing these elements, it is
possible to achieve a high level of flexibility
and individuality while reflecting an MBL -wide
communications posture.

Color Palettes
A palette of colors has been defined as a guide
to color selection for MBL publications. These
colors will provide variety, flexibility, and an
overall consistency to publication graphics.
The colors are grouped into four hue palettes:
Green, Teal, Blue and Contrasting colors. Each
palette is divided into three value groups: Base,
Muted and Dark.
The color chart indicates the colors by their
Pantone Matching System (PMS) number, along
with a corresponding formula for four-color
process printing (CMYK) and a formula for
electronic reproduction (RGB).
Screened values of the colors are permitted and
can expand the color range considerably.
It should be noted that the colors shown
on this sheet are for general reference only.
Always refer to current Pantone color guides for
accurate color matches.
In some cases, reproduction processes for
certain specialized applications may have
technical constraints on color options. Processes
such as screen printing, embroidery, engraving,
etc., will have limited palettes. In these cases,
one should select as close a match as feasible
within the particular reproduction process.

Typography
Using typography in a consistent and organized
manner is an important component in creating a
strong brand identity presentation for the MBL.
A palette of type fonts has been selected for
use throughout MBL communications. These are
divided into three serif font families and three
sans serif font families. The primary font families
are ITC Stone Serif and Syntax. The alternate
families are Baskerville and Frutiger. Two
utility font families are provided, Times Roman
and Helvetica, for situations where neither the
primary nor alternate fonts are available.
Each type family consists of several individual
type fonts, examples of some of these are
shown on this page.
In general, a few guidelines relative to
typography should be followed:
• To maintain consistency, type fonts produced
by the Adobe Corporation are preferred.
• Within the same publication (or article, in
the case of magazines) no more than one serif
and one sans serif family are recommended.
However any number of individual fonts
within each family may be employed.
• Typically, 9 or 10 point type is recommended
for publication text. Smaller sizes function
best for captions, footnotes, etc., and larger
sizes function best for headlines, subheads,
call-outs, etc.
• Note that Helvetica may be referred to as
Ariel on some computer systems, and Times
Roman may be referred to as Times or Times
New Roman.
