The Grape Exchange becomes MarketMaker
by David Scurlock, Viticulture Outreach Specialist and Julie M. Fox, Ph.D.
State Specialist, Direct Marketing & Tourism Development
The Grape Exchange services will now be done using MarketMaker. MarketMaker is a tool that
will give you the ability to have more control over content and give you more flexibility to reach
a wider audience than the Grape Exchange. We are always looking for better ways to help
everyone be more efficient and hopefully open up more avenues to market your products.
Products can be defined as grapes, wine, services, equipment, labor and any number of items that
can me marketed and only limited by your own imagination.
MarketMaker is an interactive mapping system that locates businesses and markets of
agricultural products in Ohio, providing an important link between producers and consumers.
MarketMaker allows you to customize your particular ads and display them in a more
professional manner than we were able to do in the Grape Exchange. I have included a couple of
examples of familiar Ohio businesses who are already taking advantage of MarketMaker.
Business Spotlight
Henke Winery
Henke Winery, both a winery and fullservice
restaurant, produces more than
4,000 gallons of wine and employs 10
According to the Ohio Grape Industries
Committee, Henke is one of the 145
wineries currently licensed in Ohio. Their
award-winning wine, made from locallygrown
grapes, is sold at the winery location,
as well as through grocery stores and food
Attention 2010 VEAP Recipients
By David Scurlock, Viticulture Outreach Specialist
Spring is here? Well all, or most of the indicators like the crocuses, daffodils, forsythias,
magnolias and killdeer think so. I have been getting some questions relating to vine planting
such as when is the best time to plant. Can I plant too early? Last year we probably could have
planted in the last week of April for most growers and would have been alright. You are
planting dormant vines for the most part and it is best to get them in the ground before the buds
start to swell and break to prevent literally breaking the buds off during planting. What about
Frost? Frost can be a concern and the colder air is closest to the ground. If the threat of a frost is
eminent and you have already planted and leaves are appearing then you will want to protect the
newly developing leaves and shoots by using a row cover or mulch with straw lightly to keep the
frost off the new growth. If you have just planted and the buds are still tight then you will not
have to worry as much. It then becomes a matter of a combination of things of how low the
temperature goes and how long it stays cold. The following table gives grape growth stages and
temperatures that can cause 50% injury to shoots and buds.
Swollen bud stage ------- 26F
Bud burst (break) -------- 28F
First unfolded leaf --------28F
Second unfolded leaf -----29F
Fourth unfolded leaf ------30F
After completing your VEAP planting please contact me (Dave Scurlock, 330-263-3825 or
scurlock.2@osu.edu) so that I can arrange to see your planting as the last requirement to fulfill
the VEAP contract. After verifying your planting I will file a report with OGIC and you may
send your invoice of vines purchased to Christy Eckstein to receive your grant. Please send your
invoice to:
