THE COAL TRADE BULLETIN. 43
^ COAL TRADE CASUALTIES.
Flre has again broken out in Sumter mines,
near Chattanooga. Tenn., the opening up of all the
slopes in the mines fanning the fires into a blaze.
which was thought to be entirely out. Work on
repairs has been in progress for some time, and
no one supposed that hidden in the recesses of the
mines fire was still slumbering,
—x—
In a collision in a fog off Presque Point, in Lake
Huron June 18. between the freight steamers Etruria
and Amasa Stone, the Etruria was badly
damaged and sank to the bottom of the lake, carrying
with it 7,000 tons of Hocking coal, which
had been loaded on the Hocking Valley docks at
Toledo.
—x—
The breaker structure of the Sioux colliery,
operated by the Lehigh Valley Coal Co., was destroyed
by fire on June 27, causing a loss of $55,-
000. Four hundred men and boys are idle.
—x—
The steamer Vulcan, owned by the Vesta Coal
Co., turned turtle in the Monongahela river near
Charleroi, Pa., on June 20 and probably will be
a total loss.
—x—
The towboat J. E. Leonard, engaged in the Monongahela
river coal "trade, was burned near
Brownsville, Pa., June 23; loss $15,000.
To Test Mine Inspector's Ruling.
Ex-Mine Inspector William Callaghan, mine foreman
of W. J. Rainey's Revere mines near Connellsville,
Pa., was arrested on June 26 and held for
court on a charge of violation of the mining laws,
made by Inspector I. G. Roby of the Fifth bituminous
district. Callaghan is charged with not
directing his men to undercut the coal before
blasting. Because of an order to compel this,
recently issued by Roby, the two Riverview mines
and the mines of the Masontown Coal & Coke Co.
have shut down, the miners refusing to undercut
at the present scale. More shutdowns are expected
and the result of the matter is watched with
interest by operators and men.
