Chicago, Cincinnati and the northwest and southwest
from 25 to 40 miles, and to the south and
seaboard 50 odd miles. By reason of this the
road will divert much of the through traffic from
Pittsburgh.
Since the opening of the Klondike coke region
which was developed by Mr. Thompson and several
associates, further effort has been made to get
additional coal of a quality to produce Connellsville
coke. After a careful investigation and
test, the last remaining Connellsville coking coal
was found in Greene county, between the Monongahela
river and Waynesburg, comprising 100,000
acres. The acreage of the original Connellsville
and Lower Connellsville or Klondike fields is entirely
in the hands of the large steel interests,
thus placing at a great disadvantage the independent
mills and industries. The co-operation
and material assistance has been given the project
by several of the larger independent steel
manufacturers. This entire field is owned and
controlled by Mr. Thompson and his associates.
The Washington Coal & Coke Co.. Pittsburgh
and Dawson, Pa., has awarded the contract for
the erection of 300 additional coke ovens at Star
Junction to Murphy & Campbell, contractors, of
Connellsville. Work has been started. The
No. 1 plant now has 320 ovens and No. 2 380.
The 300 new ovens will be apportioned between
the two plants making a total of 1,000 ovens, in
two plants of 500 each.
A $200,000 coke plant is to be built by the
Kittanning Iron Co. at Hays Run, 5 miles north
of Kittanning, Pa. The company has purchased
the Templeton farm at that place, which contains
about 100 acres, on which the plant will be erected.
The Geneva Coke Co., near Masontown, Pa., has
been sold to the McKeefrey Coal Co. for a consideration
of $465,000. The new owners will
build 68 new ovens at once to increase the plant
to 200 ovens.
