Interests behind the Clinchfield Corporation have
decided on plans for a 300 mile railroad to their
extensive bituminous coal lands in Virginia, an
enterprise which will involve an expenditure of
from $15,000,000 to $20,000,000. Alfred Walters,
formerly president of the Lehigh Valley railroad
will be made president of a holding corporation
which is to provide funds for the enterprise, and
he will later become head of the road. The properties
of the Clinchfield Corporation embrace
about 250,000 acres of coal land in Wyeth and
Dickenson counties and extending into a third
county. The company at present owns a branch
line, the South and Western railroad, which will
be the nucleus of the new road.
The Pennsylvania Steel Co. has bought sixteen
acres of ground in Highspire, Pa., upon which it
will erect 120 coke ovens at once. The ovens will
be modern in every respect. The gas will be used
for fuel . The ovens will be of the same pattern
as those of the company at their plants at Lebanon
and Sparrow's Point.
A. S. Vandergraff and J. W. Miller, of Tuscaloosa,
Ala., are promoting the organization of
a conipany for the purpose of developing a tract
of about 3,000 acres of coal lands near Tuscaloosa.
The quality of the coal is said to be very
similar to that mined at Brookwood.
The Indian Coal & Mining Co.. with offices at
South McAlester, I. T., is preparing to develop coal
mines at Pocahontas, I. T.. investing $50,000 in
the enterprise. The capacity of the mines when
development work shall have been completed will
be about 500 tons per day.
The Alabama Consolidated Coal & Iron Co. will
shortly erect a modern coke oven plant at Lewisburg,
Ala., at an expenditure of about $70,000.
Another coke plant will be erected at Searles,
where the company has coal mines.
The South Fayette Coke Co., has been organized
at Uniontown, Pa., with a capital of $100,000 to
develop coking coal land near Leckrone. The
company will build 112 ovens.
The Vandalia Coal Co. has bought 2,000 acres
of coal lands in what is known as the G. W.
Hill district, northwest of Bicknell, Ind., and will
develop them at once.
The West Virginia Coal Co., Morgantown, W.
Va.. is about to install a modern coal mining plant

and will build several hundred coke ovens at
Kingwooed, W. Va.
The Carnegie uoal Co., has begun work on its
new mine at Oakdale, in the Panhandle district
of the Pittsburgh field. Employment will be given
to about 200 men.
The Meyersdale Coal Co., Meyersdale, Pa., has
purchased 30 acres of coal land near Listie, somerset
county. Pa., and will commence development
work at once.
