Reading's Big Soft Coal Ton Mileage.
The annual report of the Philadelphia & Reading
railway shows that for the first time in its existence
it has carried more soft coal than anthracite.
Hard coal has ceased to constitute the largest
traffic over the road. This announcement comes
as a surprise to those who have accustomed themselves
to regard the Reading as an anthracite road
primarily. The result of the operation of the
Philadelphia & Reading railway during the fiscal
year ended with June shows that in ton mileage
bituminous coal led with a total of 1.110,000,000
tons carried one mile. This left the anthracite
traffic, as measured by ton miles, in second place.
A locomotive and 30 loaded cars were engulfed
by a cave-in while passing over an abandoned
coal mine near Shamokin, Pa.
