Dear Friends of the Foundation…
It has been said that behind every successful
community there is a Community Foundation.
That is a pretty big statement. Have you ever
thought about how your Community Foundation
is making West Chester/Liberty a better place?
One of the best ways The Community Foundation of
West Chester/Liberty builds success in our area is
by building community, focusing on the needs of our
residents and addressing these needs with grant
dollars. The end result is improving the quality of life
for all who live here. Those needs are not just in the
area of social services (Reach Out Lakota, S.E.L.F.
and One Way Farm). The Community Foundation
supports the needs for parks & recreation (Leo’s Park,
Wiggly Field and the Square @ Union Centre);
education & scholarship (our more than 25 Scholarship
Funds and the Lakota Fund); arts & culture (the
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Concert at Lakota
West, support of The Arts Council of West Chester
& Liberty and support of the National VOA Museum
of Broadcasting Video); and economic development
(FIELDS Fund, VOA MetroParks Fund and the West
Chester Baseball Complex). We are your Foundation
working in your Community.
Secondly, the Foundation offers each and every
person the opportunity to fulfill their own particular
charitable dream with ease. YOU can become a
philanthropist, make the world a better place and
leave a legacy for the community. It is as easy as
coming into The Foundation, developing a plan,
starting your Fund with a minimum dollar amount
and then working to pursue your passion. Local
parents, Robert and Allison Forte did just that when
they put their passion to benefit special needs
children into action. With a gift of less than $500,
they opened the “Anthony’s Army Fund” in honor
of their son, and took the first step in making their
dream a reality. their community…their foundation.
Finally, one of the most important ways the Foundation
builds a successful community is through Endowment.
“Endow.” While this word typically evokes the thought
of money and finance, it can also mean the gift of time
and talent. To build a successful community foundation
it takes both. The Community Foundation of West
Chester/Liberty has been endowed with the talents
of many amazing people in our community. Those
talented people have chaired our fundraisers, served
on our Board, served as our staff and worked on our
committees to build the success of the Foundation.
We are eternally grateful to their leadership and vision.

Financially speaking, when you build an Endowment
at The Foundation, you build a savings account for
the future of the community. It is similar to your own
personal retirement account. When you place dollars
in an endowment, you place them there permanently.
Building endowment is a powerful tool for a
Community Foundation. Our Forever Fund is
our Operating Endowment securing the future of
our Foundation. The Forever Fund has been built
through the generosity of the Founding Families,
Founding Businesses and Anniversary 80’s. their
generous financial gifts are securing the future of
our community…our foundation.
In spite of the sluggish economy, 2010 was a strong
year for the Foundation. Thanks to the financial
support of the business community through their
sponsorships and the attendees who supported the
events, our fundraisers were extremely successful.
These successes afforded us the tremendous
opportunity to establish a $20,000 Endowment for
our Community Grants Fund. In addition to increasing
our annual community grant expenditures, it is the
intention of the Board to annually deposit significant
funds into the Community Grants Fund Endowment.
It is a savings for our future needs.
We are proud to be building for our future. We are
thankful to you, our supporters, for enabling us to
do so. It is your Community…your Foundation!

Boys & Girls Club of Hamilton, Inc.
West Chester Summer Outreach Initiative
$2,500 was awarded to support the partnership that provides an
opportunity for disadvantaged youth from West Chester and
Liberty Townships to travel to the Boys & Girls Club in Hamilton
during the summer months. The Center provides a structured and
supervised environment with a variety of youth activities.

Shared Harvest Foodbank
Kits for Kids Campaign
$5,000 was awarded to create school supply kits
for low-income students enrolled in the Lakota
School District. 1,235 kits were provided to Lakota
families, including 1,036 designated for elementary
school students and another 259 kits allocated for
junior high students.
Hearing Speech & Deaf Center of
Greater Cincinnati
Charitable Services Program
$2,500 was provided to support the Hearing
Speech & Deaf Center’s program that provides
support to individuals and families who face
obstacles to communication regardless of their
ability to pay. The center provides audiology and
speech language, as well as, community services,
education and training for the hearing impaired.
Citizens against Domestic Violence
Dating Violence 101
$2,000 was awarded to feature a 60-75
minute presentation within area schools,
including Lakota Schools, to raise
awareness and prevention of domestic
violence among teens. The program
provides help to those teens who identify
themselves as victims of domestic
violence and works to prevent further
cases of domestic violence.
Focus on Youth
Community Education & Awareness
$2,500 was targeted for an “Education and
Awareness” Campaign. The goal of the
campaign is to increase the number of foster
parents who are willing to accept placement
of youth 10 years of age and older.
City Gospel Mission
Whiz Kids Program
$2,000 was awarded to expand the Lakota
after school Whiz Kids program. The
program provides literacy-based tutoring
that works to build the educational
confidence and competence of young
people through their relationships with
area professionals who volunteer their
time.
parachute: Butler County CaSa
CASA Volunteer Training
$2,800 was provided to support the
recruitment and training costs of CASA
(Court Appointed Special Advocates)
volunteers for the Fall, 2010 Class. Advocates
provide a voice for abused and/or neglected
children by investigating circumstances and
providing recommendations to officials to
ensure the child’s safety.

Cincinnati Symphony orchestra
CSO in Your Schools Concert
$3,500 was awarded to host a regional
concert of the Cincinnati Symphony
Orchestra (CSO) at Lakota West High
School. The Orchestra’s commitment to
music education provided an opportunity
for Lakota West to host a fundraising
concert. The event was a huge success
raising more than $10,000 for the Music
Department. In addition, Associate
Conductor Vince Lee worked with
members of the Lakota West Symphonic
Winds Brass Choir to prepare an opening
piece that was played in collaboration
with CSO musicians.

one Way Farm
Animal Education Therapy
$2,500 was provided to support the
successful Animal Education Therapy
Program that helps with the healing process
of abused, neglected and troubled children
staying at One Way Farm. The animals
show the value of safe touch through animal
contact.

Common Cause
$1,500 was awarded to Lakota West High
School to develop a program to address
cultural, social and academic issues that
young people face on a daily basis. The
goal is to create a positive culture within
Lakota West where young people have the
opportunity to share ideas, come together
and identify issues and form possible
solutions.
Big Brothers Big Sisters
At-Risk Mentors Helping At-Risk Children
$3,000 was provided to support the effort
to recruit, interview, train and match high
school students who have been identified
themselves as at-risk of developing negative
behaviors. The goals of the program, based on
extensive research, is to avoid these behaviors
by helping students develop leadership and
relationship building skills by offering an
opportunity to mentor an elementary school
student.
West Chester Fire Department
Smoke Alarms for Hearing Impaired Residents
$228.66 was directed to support the costs of
special smoke alarms that are designed for
the hearing impaired. These smoke alarms are
provided to West Chester residents allowing them
the safety necessary to remain in their homes.
Hope House rescue Mission
Center of Hope for Women & Children
Learning Lab
$5,000 was granted to support the
inclusion of an after-school Learning Lab.
The Learning Lab offers tutoring for homeless
women and children who are staying at the
new Center of Hope for Women & Children.
Children have access to one-on-one tutoring
and attention in remedial reading, writing
and mathematical skills to encourage them
to perform at their grade level. Residents are
also provided job-skills training and computer
literacy.

Special Programs
$6,000 was awarded to
support Reach Out Lakota’s
food pantry and another
$2,000 was provided for
the Adopt-A-Child for
Christmas Program. Pantry
funds support neighbors in
need by supplementing food
pantry items that are often
low in quantities, such as,
pancake mix, jelly, flour
tortillas, dry beans, chicken
and ground beef. Adopt-
A-Child funds support the
more than 300 families (800
children) enrolled in the
Program.

to help encourage clients
to be charitable and
provide tools that make it
easy to make a charitable

Kids2Kamp Fund
During their Grand

community by making a
contribution to The
Community Foundation’s
Kids2Kamp Fund. The
donation helped to send
two underprivileged
students to an overnight
summer camp experience.

The Lakota East Spark
Fund provides funds to
support the students’
efforts in providing a first
class publication. In 2010,
The Spark was inducted
into the NSPA National
Publication Hall of Fame
and earned two Best of
Show Trophy Cups at
their national convention.
Spark staff was able to
use charitable funds to
purchase an iMAC computer
and Nikon D-70 Camera
that provided a huge
improvement for the
program.

Butler County Metroparks
program Fund
The local community
jumped on board for the
MetroParks Crazy
Cardboard Regatta’s
maiden voyage in July
of 2010. Creative crews
designed and built more
than 20 boats from
cardboard. To the delight
of more than 5,000
spectators, participants
paddled 200 yards to
reach the finish line.
The event raised $8,000
to support the addition
of a playground at the
Voice of America Park.

Christmas Walk Fund
Each year, local businesses
and organizations gather
in Olde West Chester for
the Annual Christmas
Walk and Parade. The
event includes a petting
zoo, pony rides, make ‘n
take crafts and games
for children and, of course,
a visit from Santa and
Mrs. Claus!
Kromer-pavlech Family
Fund
In 2010, the Kromer-
Pavlech Family Fund
sponsored West Chester
Township’s Random
Acts of Simple Kindness
Affecting Local Seniors
(RASKALS) Day. Twice
a year, local volunteers
help senior citizens in
our community with
simple yard clean-up
chores. The Kromer-
Pavlech Family Fund
provides lunch to all
of the volunteers.

endowment campaign
at last year’s annual Dinner, the Foundation introduced our
anniversary 80 Campaign to complete our goal of achieving a $5M
endowment for our Forever Fund. Some of you may be thinking…
What is the anniversary 80 Campaign?
It is eighty individuals or families who will make the commitment to donate $25,000
each ($5,000/year for 5 years) to the Forever Fund. We need 80 families who recognize
the benefit of having a financially secure community foundation… building assets for
the future of our community. We need 80 families who understand the positive impact
charitable dollars make in their community.
Why build an endowment?
To continue our great work in the community and beyond, it is imperative that we
have a significant endowment to secure the future of the Community Foundation for
years to come. In 2009, the Community Foundation’s Forever Fund endowment held
nearly $3M in assets. These dollars were raised through the generous support of our
Founding Families, Founding Businesses and other supporters to the Fund. It is the
income from this Endowed Forever Fund as well as a portion of the proceeds from
our Key Event, Community Golf Classic, Dough Raiser and Shamrock Shuffle that
pays the operating expenses of The Foundation. Once the Forever Fund reaches its
$5M goal, then every dollar raised at these aforementioned fund raisers will be used to
expand our community grants. Imagine what an impact those additional dollars would
make in our community!
What progress have we made on the anniversary 80 Campaign?
To date, we have 14 Anniversary 80 Families leaving only 66 to go! Each family, listed
as an Anniversary 80 supporter on page 7 has made a $25,000 commitment to the
future of our community by financially securing The Community Foundation with
a total of $350,000!

charitable funds
the Community Foundation of West Chester/liberty prides itself on matching donors with
causes important to them. the Community Foundation has more than 110 charitable funds
created by individuals, families, businesses and nonprofit organizations who have chosen the
Community Foundation to assist them in their charitable giving. Based on goals of each donor,
the Community Foundation is able to assist in determining whether they should support an
already established fund or begin one of their own. If the donor has an interest in creating his/
her own charitable fund, it can be customized to support a favorite charity(s) or needs in the
community. our staff works closely with each of our fundholders every step of the way. From
determining how much or how little they want to be involved to deciding the best name for
their fund, the Foundation is there to provide the best assistance.
Funds can be created using assets such as cash, stock, securities, real estate, life insurance
or private foundation assets. additional contributions can be made at anytime or through a
planned gift. Contact the Community Foundation’s professional staff to discuss how you can
create a fund of your own today!
the Community Grant Fund enables donors to
make charitable gifts for the benefit of the entire
community. If you make a donation to The
Community Foundation with no restrictions placed
on your gift, it will be placed into this fund. Also,
a significant portion of the proceeds from our
fundraisers, such as, The Key Event and Community
Golf Classic are placed into this fund. The Community
Grant Fund allows the Foundation to respond quickly
to pressing community needs by expanding services
and programs and creating partnerships to leverage
grant dollars. Grants are recommended by the
Foundation’s Community Grant Committee, with
approval by the Board of Directors, to organizations
and initiatives that enhance the quality of life in West
Chester/Liberty.
agency endowments are established by a charitable
organization to support their mission and goals.
These funds help create a steady stream of income
for the Agency’s operations, programming and other
organizational needs.
Scholarship Funds provide an opportunity to help
students achieve their educational goals. Scholarship
funds can be designed for any level of education
from pre-school to post-graduate work. Donors may
designate particular eligibility requirements, field of
study or a specific geographic area.
Donor advised Funds provide an opportunity for
donors to recommend distributions to specific
charities at their convenience. Donors obtain an
income tax deduction for the value of appreciated
assets at the time their gift is made to their Donor
Advised Fund at the Foundation. A Donor Advised
Fund allows the donor the opportunity to combine
income tax planning with charitable giving. The
Donor Advised Fund also gives the Donor the
freedom to make grant recommendations to charities
of their choice within their own timeframe.
Designated Funds are established by the Donor
whose intent is to have their gift benefit a designated
charitable organization or purpose. These funds create
a permanent endowment, thereby giving long-term
support for their charitable organization or purpose.
Field of Interest Funds are the perfect choice for
donors who wish to support a geographic area of
their choice or a particular interest, such as, the arts,
environment or children.
Deferred Gifts allow donors to leave a charitable
legacy. The three major types of deferred funds
include bequests, charitable remainder trusts and
life insurance policies. Our staff would be happy to
discuss the benefits of these contributions with you.

in honor of their son, Anthony. Anthony is a happy,
healthy, blue-eyed boy who was born with Down
Syndrome. While many children born with Down
Syndrome suffer from devastating health issues,
Anthony’s health is nothing short of fantastic! Robert
and Allison recognize how blessed they have been and
wanted to give back to others, who are less fortunate.
Thus, the creation of the Anthony’s Army Fund to
benefit special needs children and their families.
Steve Cummins was a
legend in the world of
Lakota soccer. Not only was
he the Lakota West Boys
Head Soccer Coach, he was
a tremendous science and
physical education teacher
from 1983-2003. Upon his
passing funds were
raised to support the establishment
of a new entrance
to the soccer fields at the
newly-named Steve Cummins
Soccer Park at Lakota
West High School.

anniversary
celebration

on april 26, 2010, 300 supporters of the Community Foundation
gathered to celebrate the Foundation’s 10th anniversary. the night
featured our very own Congressman John a. Boehner as the Keynote
Speaker. the Foundation also unveiled a special video giving insight to
the Community Foundation’s impact in the community. one of the
highlights of the evening was the presentations to the winners of the
2010 lakota educator of excellence awards. Katie Woodruff, a special
education teacher at Woodland elementary and audrey Stamp, a German
teacher at lakota east, were named the 2010 recipients; each receiving a
$2500 grant for their School plus various personal gifts. the evening
concluded with a crowd pleasing special duo pianist performance by
rod nimtz and Jeff Smith.

annIVerSarY Grant aWarDS
In honor of our 10th anniversary, $10,000 in grants were presented to
area charities. our thanks to the anniversary Grant Sponsors for their
support of this program: Clark-theders Insurance agency, Inc., Huntington
Bank, union Centre Boulevard Merchant association and the Community
Foundation’s Grant Committee. a $2,500 grant was awarded to each of
the following four organizations:
West Chester Branch of the Middletown library
Grant funds were dedicated to enhance the Children’s
Department by expanding their pre-emergent reader
collection. This collection provides the building
blocks for a solid reading foundation and provides
families an opportunity to access these resources not
readily available to the general public.
Hearing Speech and Deaf Center of Greater Cincinnati
Funds were allocated to support the Hearing
Speech and Deaf Center’s West Chester office to
obtain the necessary instruments and equipment to
expand their services in the West Chester/Liberty
community via the schools, pre-schools, nursing
homes and long-term care facilities. The Center
provides support to individuals and families who
face obstacles to communication.
West Chester presbyterian Church
Grant funds were provided to support the West
Chester Presbyterian Church’s Community Supper.
Beginning in 2005, every Monday evening the Church
provides meals to anyone in the community who
needs a meal or companionship. The program
currently serves more than 7,300 meals each year.
reach out lakota
Assistance was provided to support Reach Out
Lakota’s mission of providing help and hope into
the hands of individuals and families within the
West Chester and Liberty Township areas. Support
was provided to assist with the expenses associated
with their Back-to-School, Thanksgiving Baskets
and Adopt-A-Child for Christmas Programs.

established a variety of Board Designated Funds to
address significant needs in our community. these
Funds are sustained by the community and the

angel Fund
In 2010, The Angel Fund was the recipient of a $25,000
grant from the Jacob G. Schmidlapp Trusts, Fifth Third
Bank, Trustee. This generous gift allowed the Angel Fund
to expand its efforts to provide emergency assistance to
neighbors in need. One of those emergency cases involved
helping the family of a local fire fighter who passed away
suddenly in a car accident. With no extended family, his 18
year old son and 14 year old daughter were left to plan and
cover the expenses of their father’s funeral. The Angel Fund
stepped in and assisted the children in covering the funeral
costs thereby giving their father, a local hero, a proper burial.
Kids2Kamp Fund
Established with the idea that every student
should get the opportunity to experience the joys
of camp, Kids2Kamp was created to provide
disadvantaged children within the Lakota Schools
an opportunity to attend summer camp. Children
in grades 1-3 are provided with the experience to
attend a week-long day camp at the local YMCA,
while children in grades 4-6 are offered the
opportunity to attend a weeklong overnight
camp experience.
In November, The Heroes’ Fund hosted its
Annual Fundraising Gala featuring music by
the Tom Daugherty Orchestra.
Heroes’ Fund
Similar to the Angel Fund, the Heroes’ Fund
has been established to provide one time
financial support for any military family,
current or honorably discharged, whose
primary breadwinner has served in a
combat zone or, if the serviceman/woman is
unmarried, to the parents or family members
with whom he/she resides. This fund is
available to qualified persons residing in
Butler, Warren and Hamilton County, or to
non-profits serving this group of qualified
residents. One of the veterans assisted by
the Fund in 2010, was Joe, a Vietnam army
veteran who had recently undergone back
surgery. Not able to work, Joe and his family
were falling behind in their bills very quickly.
The Heroes’ Fund stepped in and prevented
a foreclosure on Joe’s home until he was able
to get back to work and support his family.

done if we hadn’t found the Heroes’ Fund.
It’s amazing there are such caring individuals
out there to help the deserving military guys
that have put their lives in jeopardy just to
save all of ours.”

Youth in philanthropy (YIp) Fund
Designed to introduce local high school students to philanthropy and community development,
YIP provides hands-on experience that benefits both the participating student and local charities.
Students raise money, build endowment funds and make grants to local nonprofit organizations.
In addition, YIP seeks to create fun, safe activities for youthful participation, while raising funds
to support their work. In 2010, YIP awarded $1,300 to support Reach Out Lakota’s Back to School
Program. The program provided more than 400 Lakota students with necessary school supplies at
the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year.
power of the purse Fund
The Power of the Purse (POP) Fund seeks to educate,
inspire and increase the number of women committed
to philanthropy. Quarterly, POP members host
social events where they work to solicit and review
requests from area non-profits and recruit new members
to join their effort. Together, the membership votes on
which organization to receive their annual grant award.
In 2010, POP members pooled their financial resources,
each making a $100 contribution, to award $10,000 to
Healthy Visions. Healthy Visions provides programming
to help prepare people to make better choices to build
stronger relationships during adolescence, marriage and
parenting. To date, the POP Fund has awarded more
than $40,000 to area charities.

Each March, the Community Foundation partners with the Union
Centre Boulevard Merchant Association and West Chester Township
to host the Shamrock Shuffle. In 2010, the Shuffle attracted more
than 1,200 registrants who participated in the 5k run/walk or 10k run.
Following the Run/Walk the participants were treated to a variety of
breakfast goodies provided by our generous sponsors, including;
Champps, Panera Bread, Starbucks and Dingle House Irish Pub.
In addition, hundreds of children, ages 3-10, participated in the
Leprechaun Lap sponsored by IKEA. 2010 proceeds totaled more than
$20,000, doubling the proceeds made in 2009. The Shamrock Shuffle
is the brainchild of Founders Shellie Leder and Melissa Benedict and
is made possible by the cooperation of West Chester Township and
the Union Centre Boulevard Merchant Association. It is a wonderful
showcase of our community.

Community Foundation hosts a variety of fundraising events. thanks to the generous support
of our sponsors and event attendees our 2010 fundraisers had a record-breaking year, raising
more than $200,000. this success, allowed the Foundation’s Board of Directors to take the
momentous step of establishing an endowment for the Community Grants Fund. the Board
opened this Fund with a $20,000 gift to the future of our Community Grants. this endowment
will continue to grow each year, maximizing the impact the Foundation is able to have on our
community through its grantmaking process. this tremendous milestone would not have been
possible without the generous support of our local businesses, families and individuals who
faithfully support our fundraising endeavors. our thanks to each and every one of you!
For the fourth year in a row, philanthropists
extraordinaire Becky and Todd Wilber,
owners of Uno’s Chicago Grill, hosted
their annual Dough raiser to benefit The
Community Foundation. This popular
community event is a wonderful opportunity
for folks to come together for great food
and drink while raising money for the
Community Foundation. This volunteerdriven
event raised more than $9,600 to
benefit the Community Grants Fund at
the Foundation.

Driven by the ever-vigilant and singularly-focused Key event Chair,
Gail Jackson Miller, and her phenomenal Key Event Committee,
the Key Event became the Foundation’s most successful fundraiser
to date raising more than $120,000! With more than 460 people
in attendance, the cocktail party was rockin’ with guests vying for
highly sought-after auction items such as tickets to “Dancing with
the Stars;” a dinner party for 12 hosted by The Speaker of the House
John A. Boehner and his lovely wife, Debbie; plus trips, condos
and a dinner hosted in the State Capitol by Carolyn and State
Representative Bill Coley. Of course, the highlight of the evening
were the dinners prepared by local chefs in the 25 Host Homes.
Following dinner, guests traveled to the Alderson home to mingle,
compare notes and dance to the music of the Modulators.
Each year the Community Foundation hosts
two signature events…The Community Golf
Classic and the Key Event. During these
tough economic times, the generosity of this
community is especially sweet. On August 2,
we held our 11th annual Community Golf
Classic raising a record $61,000 to benefit
the Foundation. Our applause and
gratefulness to the generous support of all
of our loyal business sponsors and in-kind
donors with special thanks to the returning
Presenting Sponsors North Ridge Realty
Group and Clark-Theders Insurance
Agency, Inc. The event, with golf at both
Wetherington and Four Bridges Golf Clubs,
went off flawlessly under the leadership of
