idealized cases. (Imag<strong>in</strong>e this layer as a doughnut whose outer circumference rests on the horizon and<br />

whose <strong>in</strong>ner circumference co<strong>in</strong>cides with the boundaries of the cloud overhead - your station is <strong>in</strong> a<br />

hole.) Now, if the outer perimeter of the cloud layer rests on the horizon and the <strong>in</strong>ner perimeter<br />

approaches the zenith, the sky cover is more than 7/8 but less than 8/8. S<strong>in</strong>ce an overcast sky condition<br />

cannot be anyth<strong>in</strong>g less than 8/8 total sky cover, this sky condition is classified as broken (see Figure 5-<br />

7).<br />
