Refractive microlenses are the No. 1
choice for all applications in which
miniaturization of an optical system and
reduction of alignment and packaging
costs play a major role. Microlenses
typically have a lens diameter of 10 µm
to 2 mm and are produced in the form of
arrays (fields) on planar substrates
(wafers).
Refractive microlenses are manufactured
from synthetic fused silica or silicon in a
cleanroom environment using the highly
sophisticated processes of the semiconductor
industry (photolithography,
plasma etching). These processes allow
precise production of complex array
optics and excellent optical quality of the
microlenses.
For spherical lens profiles, the conic
constant k is 0; for parabolic profiles, k =
-1 and for hyperbolic profiles,
k = -(n 1 ) 2 .
High-grade microlenses are usually made
of synthetic fused silica (refractive index
n 589nm = 1.458) or silicon (n 1.5µm = 3.478).
Fused silica microlenses can be used in
the full wavelength spectra from DUV to
IR (see transmission curve); silicon
microlenses are designed for the infrared
wavelength range (λ: 1.2 µm to 15 µm).
Applications
Typical tasks of microlenses in an optical
system are collimation and focusing of
light beams, or imaging an object in a
focal plane. In optical communication
engineering, a microlens array is used to
image the light of a fiber bundle onto an
array of micromirrors. A second microlens
array couples the deflected light of the
individual data channels back into a fiber
array. The high precision of the lateral
array dimensions (better than ±0.25 µm)
allows a very accurate fiber-to-lens
positioning of many channels in one
alignment step. The high-class lens
quality and the exceptional lens-to-lens
uniformity ensure optimal coupling
efficiencies for all optical channels in
parallel. Aspherical lens profiles are used
to minimize the spherical aberrations for
different optical configurations (vertical
incident light).
Varioptic Autofocus Liquid Lens
Operating mode of liquid lenses
The liquid lenses developed by VARIOP-
TIC are based on the phenomenon of
elec tro-wetting. A water drop lies on a
metallic substrate, which is covered by a
thin insulation layer. The voltage applied
between substrate and water drop varies
the contact angle between water drop
and substrate. Liquid lenses from
VARIOPTIC use two liquids, one of which
is used as an insulator, while the other
one is used as conducting layer. Varying
the applied voltage leads to a change in
bend of the border layer between both
liquids. This causes a change in focal
length of the lens. VARIOPTIC owns two
fundamental, worldwide patents about
this technology and is dedicating a large
part of their development capacity to the
improvement and expansion of these
patents.
Characteristics of liquid lenses:
• Large range of focal length
• Robust – no moving components
• Short reaction time
• Very good optical quality
• Good transmission in the range
of visible wavelengths
• Large range of operating temperature
• Very good stability of the optical axis
• Low power consumption
• Simple, cost-saving design
Field of application:
For future mobiles, PDAs, etc.
According to the technology used,
VARIOPTIC’s optically controlled lenses
are also called liquid lenses. Liquid lenses
are well-suited for the next generation
of mobile devices with camera function:
mobiles, PDAs, digicams and many more.
The VARIOPTIC-technology offers some
key benefits for this type of devices:
• Very small size: 8 mm in diameter,
thickness of 2 mm
• Simple design
• Short reaction time < 2/100 s
• Low power consumption
Medical technology
The big potential of VARIOPTIC with
refer ence to miniaturisation creates
many new opportunities in the area of
imaging. So, liquid lenses are, for
instance, suitable for installation inside
endoscopes, confocal microscopes and
for laser focusing. Oph thalmology will
also benefit from this new technology of
liquid lenses.
Biometry and identification
The short reaction time of 2/100 s is an
essential benefit for recognising specific
features: barcodes or biometric
character istics like iris or finger prints.
The manufacturer:
VARIOPTIC is a leading enterprise in
development and manufacturing of
electronically controlled liquid optical
lenses for the optical industry. VARIOPTIC
is, for instance, the first enterprise which
was granted international patents for a
single-component focusing lens, which is
based on non-mixable liquids. In order to
retain and to further develop their
technological head start, VARIOPTIC
invests increasingly in research and
development.
VARIOPTIC has its headquarter in Lyon, in
France, and was founded in 2002.
Focus-Variable Lenses from Optotune
The focus-variable lenses from Optotune
are manufactured from elastic polymers
and have unique properties: the lens
shape can be changed from convex to
concave mechanically or electronically. A
clear aperture from 1 to is 30 mm is
possible.
Both lens types work with the same
principle: two chambers are separated
through a thin mem-brane, one chamber
is filled with a liquid and the other with
air. The pressure difference between the
two chambers defines the deflection and
with that the radius of the lens.
The pressure difference is being controlled
by using a thread ring to push a
ring-shaped actuator down onto the
chamber. The changes are reversible;
there is no hysteresis.
High Quality
Advantages of focus-variable lenses fromOptotune:
• Compact design
• Fast response time
• Robustness (no complex mechanics)
• High switching frequency (frictionless)
Advantages
The variable focal length of these
innovative spherical lenses enables the
design of very compact optical systems. A
change in the radius of curvature of just
a few micrometers can correspond to an
axial shift in the centimeter range. The
typical switching frequency of the
electronically adjustable lens is of the
order of about 100 Hz. Fewer lenses will
be needed for an optical design; an axial
movement of the components is less
complex or even unnecessary. No need
for complex mechanics or motors
anymore. This means: fewer moving
components and thus a lighter, more
rugged, fully closed and dust-free design.
Field of Application
These lenses are ideally suited to be used
both in compact imaging systems and in
illumination systems, such as LED-based
systems.
Compact Zoom Optic
A change of the radius of curvature of a
lens has a greater visual effect than is
common practice with adjusting lenses.
This enables the development of more
compact optical systems. This way it is
possible to save up to 50% of the overall
length of e.g. an optical 3-times zoom
lens.
Applications in the Machine Vision field
often demand very fast focusing onto
different working distances. This most
often requires that the radius of one
single lens is being adjusted – which is
the ideal application area of the
focus-variable lens.
Electrically Focus Variable Lens EL-10-30
Compact optics and short setting time:
EL-10-30 allows for that due to its electrically
tunable focal range. Within
10 ms, the radius of this plano-convex
lens can be changed by applying a
voltage between 0 and 5 V. The lens can
be operated with commercial power
supplies allowing for current control.
Power consumption is less than 2 W. For
each lens a test chart displaying the
dependendency between focal length
and current can be provided. In the
download area, a DLL is provided for
embedding the lens in ZEMAX.
