What A Year
It’s Been!
-By Bob Yassin
While we have been celebrating our 80th Anniversary and with
it the Art Center’s 80th Anniversary Legacy Campaign to raise
funds for the New Palos Verdes Art Center, the Art Center is also
on the cusp of another anniversary: one year in our temporary
location here at The Promenade. And what a year it has been.
I remember when we first looked at the space. It still
seemed like a bookstore (remember Border’s?) but with a
little ingenuity and some modest construction we transformed
the space into a reasonable facsimile of the Art Center while
continuing our programs without interruption. Here, I want to
convey our many thanks to Stoltz Management and their local
General Manger, Liz Griggs, for making this space available to
us. For a project like ours, to be able to continue with little program
interruption is really quite unusual. And I also know from
the many positive comments I hear, that the location has been
well-received. It has also been a real help in reaching new
audiences and raising our image in the community.
Now, because this has been such a positive experience,
it has been suggested by many of you that we should keep a
presence here at The Promenade. I have been working with Liz
Griggs to that end and if it can be worked out I hope we will be
able to keep at least part of our programming here. We will certainly
be at The Promenade until the end of this year, by which
time the construction will be complete and, I hope, we will
have completed the move back. That return will mark a new era
for the Palos Verdes Art Center/Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts
Education. Adapting to new and improved spaces, and identifying
and maximizing the new opportunities the reconstructed
facility will provide will be a wonderful challenge.
Meanwhile, full activity continues here at the Promenade
site. Two wonderful shows will be here through the summer,
Photography and the Paletteers exhibitions, plus we have a
full and exciting program of summer classes and children’s
art camps. The Associates will present this year’s edition of
Celebrate Chefs—get your tickets early before they are all gone!
Information for all programs and events can be found in this
Artifacts.
Construction is moving forward at full-speed and we are
at the $5,000,000 mark in our $5.5 million goal. If you have
not made a contribution, I hope you will do so. We still have
spaces to name and places on our donor’s boards for you.
Remember, a gift to the Art Center’s Capital Campaign is really
a gift to the community and all the people we serve. It is the
kind of gift that keeps on giving.
Art Education
Thrives!
-By Loren DeRoy
The Palos Verdes Art Center has always focused on providing
the community with quality art education. This past fall and
spring, the impact of our educational programs was made
evident by the caliber of our student’s art on exhibit in the
Student Perspective Exhibition and Art at Your Fingertips
Exhibition. The Student Perspective show featured over 250
artworks created by students taking classes at the PVAC and
their talent was truly inspirational. The AAYF Exhibition, curated
by Suzi Bracegirdle and Gaye Vancans, featured art created
by elementary school students in the Art At Your Fingertips
program. Art at Your Fingertips not only provides over 7,000
students each year with hands-on art experiences, but thanks
to the expertise of PVAC’s Education Director, Gail Phinney,
each project also includes age-appropriate lesson plans
aligned with State Standards in the visual arts. It is very fitting
that the Palos Verdes Art Center now has “Education” in its
formal name with the addition of the Beverly G. Alpay Center
for Arts Education made possible by the generous donor support
of Dr. O. Allen Alpay.
In April, the Circle’s Homes Tour Extraordinaire featured
the unique homes of Portuguese Bend with a lunch and boutique
at the temporary PVAC location. Homes Tour Chairs,
Mary Sheh and Pam Sherman and their committee of volunteers,
as well as PVAC staff deserve special thanks for
orchestrating a wonderfully successful event, despite Mother
Nature’s unwanted contribution. This spring also saw another
successful Win Your Dream Home Raffle. Bob Yassin deserves
special thanks and recognition for the continued outstanding
financial success of the Dream Home raffles, which he initiated
10 years ago to build the endowment fund for the PVAC.
Despite increasing competition, proceeds from this year’s
raffle exceeded $500,000.
Looking forward to the summer, you won’t want to miss
the Paletteers and Photography Exhibition featuring five
renowned photographers and over 90 pieces of work by
the Paletteers, which opens June 29. Also this summer, the
PVAC’s popular Art-Rageous Art Camp begins July 16 with five
one week sessions. You can register your eager campers by
calling 310-541-2479. It is also time to buy your tickets for
the Associate’s 2012 Celebrate Chefs and Cellars event on
July 29, destined to be a delightful evening that will delight
your palette.
It gives me great pleasure
to report on the progress
with our 80th Anniversary
Legacy Campaign. We are
most grateful to all of our
supporters who have contributed to the $5 million
dollar mark. This leaves just $500,000 to achieve
our campaign goal. At this point, every gift makes
a difference.
As we continue with the Community Campaign
phase, an exciting new opportunity is available to
families with school-age children. Carol and Jay
Borzi have generously donated funds that will match
all gifts and pledges to the 80th Anniversary Legacy
Campaign from families with children through grade
12. The Borzi Family Challenge Grant will match
these funds one-to-one, with a special incentive to
Art At Your Fingertips docents. We hope that you
take advantage of this special challenge.
There are many ways in which you can support
the campaign. Become a Founding Member of
the Art Center’s Renaissance Society, a new major
donor support group, with your pledge of $10,000,
payable over four years; or a pledge of a major gift
that offer spaces and program naming opportunities
We are almost to our goal. I want to again
underscore that every campaign gift is truly appreciated
and every contribution, no matter the amount,
will make a difference.

Keeping Art Education
IN OUR LOCAL SCHOOLS
PVAC offers standards-based art education for more than 7,000 Peninsula students each year. Now in its 37th year, Art At Your Fingertips
docents teach elementary school students through five creative projects. Projects are aligned with California Visual and Performing Arts
Standards, incorporating artistic perception, creative expression and historical, cultural context and aesthetic valuing.
Proud as a Peacock
Inspired by the decadent beauty of peacock
feathers, this colorful drawing project
will introduce students to American
painter James Whistler’s “Peacock
Room” and the history of the peacock as
a decorative motif celebrated by various
cultures. Students will create their own
impression of a peacock using colorful
oil pastels contrasted against a textured black sand paper background.
Project created by Lee-Jean Lin
Scottish Nights In this project, students create
an original work in the Art
Nouveau style of Scotland’s
Hannah Frank’s pen and ink
drawings. Students will use a
stylus on black scratchboard to
create an outdoor nighttime scene while they experiment with
positive and negative space in a fun, new medium. Project created
by Penny Richards
Owls in the Neighborhood
The Art At Your Fingertips Board of Directors Proudly Presents
Art At Your Fingertips Projects for the 2012–2013 School Year
In this directed drawing project, students
will learn about the ornithological prints
and drawings by American naturalist John
James Audubon. Children will use black
and brown chalk pastels to create a realistic
image of an owl incorporating the elements
of line and shape. Project created
by Kaye Furlong
Combine Creation
In this project, students will be
introduced to the art form of assemblage
inspired by the three-dimensional
“Combines” of American
Abstract Expressionist painter Robert
Rauschenberg. Using a combination
of acrylic and metallic paint, fabric,
paper and found objects, children
will create their own unique art piece
emphasizing balance. Project created
by Laurie Bucher
Palos Verdes Butterfly Blues
This pen and watercolor pencil project
will create awareness about the importance
of conservation. Inspired by the
work of 17th century botanical illustrator
Maria Sibylla Merian, students will illustrate
the local deerweed plant accented
by a three-dimensional rendering of the
endangered Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly.
