JUMPING REPORT by Fred Morris The· Ottawa Ski Club jumping program enjoyed a reasonably successful season. Snow conditions on <strong>the</strong> midget, intermediate and junior jumps were excellent, most of <strong>the</strong> time. The 60 metre Lockeberg Jump was not operable until mid-February because of poor wea<strong>the</strong>r conditions and lack of snow to profile <strong>the</strong> landir,g hill ade quately. Rain at <strong>the</strong> end of January and 1st week of February caused springs to become active on <strong>the</strong> landing hill. Continuous thawing and freezing contributed to our headaches. Lack of snow on <strong>the</strong> in-run tower didn't help ei<strong>the</strong>r. This was due mostly to severe wind conditions that followed each snowfall. Despite <strong>the</strong>se problems we enjoyed one of our most active seasons in <strong>the</strong> midget, juvenile and junior divisions. The three jumps in this category saw an ever increasing number of our young <strong>club</strong> members making full use of <strong>the</strong>se hills at every possible opportunity. Some of our more aggressive teen group took <strong>the</strong>ir first ride on <strong>the</strong> Lockeberg 60 metre jump with amazing ly good results. Our coaching staff welcomes this group to <strong>the</strong> 60 metre hill this coming season. On <strong>the</strong> competitive scene, our jumpers have made a commendable impression while representing <strong>the</strong> Ottawa Ski Club. Our boys, some of whom are on Can ada's National Team, took part in meets at Revelstoke, B.C., Sault Ste. Marie, Trois Rivieres, Mont Ste Anne, Port Arthur, Westby, Wisconsin and Alta, Utah. At <strong>the</strong> Port Arthur Meet Dave Fripp won <strong>the</strong> Canadian Junior Championships title. Kim Fripp (Dave's younger bro<strong>the</strong>r) placed fifth. Peter Wilson won <strong>the</strong> Junior division title at Mont Ste. Anne and was second at Trois Rivieres. Bill Merrill was fifth at Trois Rivieres. Gerry Gravelle, Rhea) Seguin and Pat rick Morris also made commendable showings, always within <strong>the</strong> top ten. Pat Morris won <strong>the</strong> Eastern Canada Senior Championships title at Mont Ste. Anne. He placed fourth at Revelstoke and was named an alternate to <strong>the</strong> Olympic Team. In <strong>the</strong> U.S. Nationals at Westby, Wisconsin he was seventh. Last February 6, at <strong>the</strong> Associated Commercial Travellers dinner and award night at <strong>the</strong> Chateau Laurier, Patrick Morris was awarded <strong>the</strong> Tom Foley Memorial Trophy, as <strong>the</strong> most outstanding amateur 17 athlete for Ottawa and District, during 1967. Three o<strong>the</strong>r Ottawa Ski Club members have won this ward, Anne Heggtveit, Art Tommy and John Clifford. At <strong>the</strong> 1967 A.C.T. Dinner, W. G. (Bud) Clark, mem ber of <strong>the</strong> Jumping Committee, was named as <strong>the</strong> outstanding sportsman for Ottawa and district, for <strong>the</strong> previous year. The O'Keefe International Tournament, though not a financial success, certainly brought a substantial amount of publicity to <strong>the</strong> Club and O'Keefe with a full half hour coverage by CBC-TV Sports. The o<strong>the</strong>r news media also gave excellent cov erage to <strong>the</strong> event and advance publicity as well. We thank <strong>the</strong> different news me dia for <strong>the</strong>ir continued help and support. Some of <strong>the</strong> highlights for <strong>the</strong> coming 1968-69 season include a Christmas training camp clinic, from Dec. 26-30. It will be held in <strong>the</strong> Lockeberg jump hill area for all categories of jumpers.
