SUMMER FESTIVAL SCORES
125,000 people visited the Ski Club
this summer to enjoy a centennial proje::t
that wouldn't die.
CBC Ottawa again held a series of
free concerts in the natural amphitheatre
near Fortune Lodge. Gilles Vigneault,
Gordon Lightfoot, Mel Tonne and Jean
Pierre Ferland drew capacity crowds of all
ages. Attendance ranged from I 50 to
17,000 for the 36 sessions. The concerts
were broadcast over CBO and CBOF.
Ballet was introduced this year at two
performances in late July and despite cold
weather the experiment was an artistic
success.
Ian Fellows, Summer Festival co-ordinator,
expressed his delight that CBC and
the Ski Club have worked so well together
on this project. "Having these concerts
recorded for use on both English and
French stations at a ski club in Quebec
builds bridges between French and English
cultures, and between the sporting and
artistic world," he said.
The Club and the CBC hope to continue
this bridge-building next summer. After all,
125,000 concert fans just can't be wrong .

Racing
At a meeting of the Gatineau Ski Zone
this Spring, an important change was made
in the age requirements of the Midget
competitor. A Midget, now, for the purposes
of racing, is a child who has not
reached his fourteenth birthday prior to
September 1st of the current year. In
other words the age limit has been raised
by about one year. This now conforms
with age limits of the Laurentian Zone and
the Nancy Greene Little League.
Kent Boucher, the Vice President of
the Ottawa Ski Club, who has successfully
chaired the Midget Racing Program committee
for the past few years is turning the
reins over to Don and Cynthia Reid this
season. Don and Cynthia have been active
in Midget Racing for a number of years
and are well qualified to head up this
program.
A large crowd enjoys a Summer Festival concert.
7
In the 1968 racing season the Ottawa
Ski Club held twelve Gatineau Zone and
club events, attended by 760 children.
This enthusiastic attendance certainly endorses
the popularity of this program.
The opening races this year, a prelim
inary Giant Slalom and Slalom are scheduled
for Sunday, January 5, '69 at II :00
a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on the Marshall Hill.
These races are open to any O.S.C. Midget
and as usual will be used to grade the chil
dren either "A" or "B". Only the "A" rated
competitors will be permitted to enter the
Gatineau Zone Alpine events. The Nordic
events are open to all Midgets.
The Gatineau Zone has been awarded
a Quebec Division Midget race this year.
The date and location will be announced in
the near future. Consideration is being
given this year to the formation of a Nancy
Greene Little League for the "B" rated mid
gets only by the Gatineau Zone. There
will be more on this in the next bulletin.
Doug Livingstone, our Midget racing
coach, has issued a call to all competitors
for training sessions, which begin on Satur
day, January 4, '69. The children should
meet Doug at the Slalom Hill tow shack
at 10:30 a.m. The Midgets are also invited
to attend the Gatineau Zone Christmas
clinic. For further information, please
ON THE TRAILS- 1968
by Richard Cowan
Already many hours have been spent
this fall brushing our trail system, repairing
bridges and removing fallen trees in preparation
for the coming winter. We have
encountered high water on all the trails in
the Fortune Lake area and behind Shilly
Shally where the beavers have returned.
The many new signs put up in the Kings
mere area and on the Hidden Valley Trail
and the numbering of the runs on our remaining
trails and incorporation in the 1968
Ski Map paid off. We had only one search
last winter and were preparing for the
second one when the people skied in on
their own. We are placing 70 additional
signs at junctions of trails to make it easier
for our members to follow the trails. We
are also perpetuating the interesting des
criptive names of some of the runs on the
trails by replacing the old faded signs. We
are indebted to the National Capital Commission
for the publication of our new trail
map which is available at the Ski Club
Office and from the Caretaker at Keogans
Lodge. There will only be a few minor
corrections west of the McClosky Road in
the publication of this year's edition.
It is disappointing to note that only
57 Club members applied for their mileage
touring badges for last winter. These badges
will again be available this year in the following
categories: 25, 50, 75, 100, 150,
200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450 and 500. If
any member exceeds 500 miles we will have
an appropriate bar made for his touring
badge. Keep track of your mileage skied
and submit your request for a badge at the
end of the ski season to Richard Cowan,
305A First Ave., Ottawa.
A very successful Shilly Shally Fun
Race was held for the children and their
parents under the Convenorship of Mrs.
Peter Glynn. The Ottawa Journal Junior
Touring Trophy was presented on that
occasi"on to Erik Poole for the tremendous
interest that he had displayed touring our
trail network with map and compass.
Thanks' are extended to the many members
who assisted and donated food and money
for the Annual Shilly Shally Races.
Many of our Club members skied in the
Canadian Marathon Tour on February 3rd
and 4th and prepared sections of the
tour route from Montebello to Camp For
tune. The Trail Riders prepared the final
section of the route for the Governor General
to ski on and as well had an official
team entered in the event consisting of Tom
Berry, Bruce Boyd, Steve Outhet, Davie!
9
McArthur and Robert Sinclair. They placed
fifth in the racing section of the event.
Our very handsome and unusual Trail
Rider Trophy which is on permanent display
in Camp Fortune Lodge is raced for
annually in closed competition. It was won
this year by Robert Sinclair who beat out
23 other Trail Riders. My thanks go to
the many trail skiers who have offered
words of encouragement to me and the
Trail Riders, who have provided transportation
for them, and who have donated prizes
and money for the Trail Rider Race. My
thanks to all the members of Trail Lodge
Committee who have spent so many days
AUDITORS' REPORT
Gentlemen:
We have made an examination of the balance sheet of the Ottawa Ski Club Inc. as at
April 30, 1968, and the statements of Operations for the year ended on that date. Our
examination included a general review of the accounting procedures and such tests of
accounting records and other supporting evidence as we considered necessary in the circumstances.
In our opinion the accompanying balance sheet and statements of Operations present fairly
the financial position of the Club as at April 30, 1968, and the results of its operations for the
year ended on that date, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
JUMPING REPORT
by Fred Morris
The· Ottawa Ski Club jumping program
enjoyed a reasonably successful season.
Snow conditions on the midget, intermediate
and junior jumps were excellent, most
of the time. The 60 metre Lockeberg Jump
was not operable until mid-February because
of poor weather conditions and lack
of snow to profile the landir,g hill ade
quately.
Rain at the end of January and 1st week
of February caused springs to become
active on the landing hill. Continuous
thawing and freezing contributed to our
headaches. Lack of snow on the in-run
tower didn't help either. This was due
mostly to severe wind conditions that followed
each snowfall.
Despite these problems we enjoyed one
of our most active seasons in the midget,
juvenile and junior divisions. The three
jumps in this category saw an ever increasing
number of our young club members
making full use of these hills at every possible
opportunity. Some of our more aggressive
teen group took their first ride on
the Lockeberg 60 metre jump with amazing
ly good results. Our coaching staff welcomes
this group to the 60 metre hill this
coming season.
On the competitive scene, our jumpers
have made a commendable impression
while representing the Ottawa Ski Club.
Our boys, some of whom are on Can
ada's National Team, took part in meets
at Revelstoke, B.C., Sault Ste. Marie, Trois
Rivieres, Mont Ste Anne, Port Arthur,
Westby, Wisconsin and Alta, Utah.
At the Port Arthur Meet Dave Fripp
won the Canadian Junior Championships
title. Kim Fripp (Dave's younger brother)
placed fifth. Peter Wilson won the Junior
division title at Mont Ste. Anne and was
second at Trois Rivieres. Bill Merrill was
fifth at Trois Rivieres.
Gerry Gravelle, Rhea) Seguin and Pat
rick Morris also made commendable showings,
always within the top ten.
Pat Morris won the Eastern Canada
Senior Championships title at Mont Ste.
Anne. He placed fourth at Revelstoke and
was named an alternate to the Olympic
Team. In the U.S. Nationals at Westby,
Wisconsin he was seventh.
Last February 6, at the Associated
Commercial Travellers dinner and award
night at the Chateau Laurier, Patrick Morris
was awarded the Tom Foley Memorial
Trophy, as the most outstanding amateur
17
athlete for Ottawa and District, during
1967.
Three other Ottawa Ski Club members
have won this ward, Anne Heggtveit, Art
Tommy and John Clifford. At the 1967
A.C.T. Dinner, W. G. (Bud) Clark, mem
ber of the Jumping Committee, was named
as the outstanding sportsman for Ottawa
and district, for the previous year.
The O'Keefe International Tournament,
though not a financial success, certainly
brought a substantial amount of publicity
to the Club and O'Keefe with a full half
hour coverage by CBC-TV Sports. The
other news media also gave excellent cov
erage to the event and advance publicity
as well. We thank the different news me
dia for their continued help and support.
Some of the highlights for the coming
1968-69 season include a Christmas training
camp clinic, from Dec. 26-30. It will
be held in the Lockeberg jump hill area
for all categories of jumpers.
The Jumping Committee for the 1968-69
season is as follows: Chairman - Fred
Morris; Chairman of Judges - Russell
Smart, Assistants, Earl Fillman and W. G.
"Bud" Clark; Chairman, Result Calculations
- Raymond Desrochers; Chairman of
Distance Measures - Stig Sjolund, Assistant,
Barbara Sjolund; Head Coach - Ray
mond Desrochers; Assistant Coaches -
Russ Smart, Stig Sjolund, Gerry Gravelle,
Patrick Morris; Executive Secretary
- Art Appleby; Development - Arnold
On behalf of the Jumping Committee,
the Lodge, for families in which there is
a Mini-midget and a younger child age 2
or over.
4. At least one parent must be an
Ottawa Ski Club member, as the Lodge is
for the use of members only. Memberships
can be purchased at the Ottawa Ski Club
Office on Queen Street.
5. Mini-midgets must be Ottawa Ski
6. Mini-midgets must have steel-edged
skis with release cable fittings. Boots should
be sturdy. As a guide, the skis should be
about the same height as the child for a
year olds. Plastic bases are desirable for 5
year olds, but not for beginning 4 year
SKI TOURING
by Murray Anderson
Writing a report on last year's touring
program in the balmy weather of fall
1968 is a study in contrasts. That is quite
appropriate for last winter was full of
contrasts- mild and cold, thaws and rain
followed by an inadvertent flicking of the
switches marked ·Powder and Sun. Early
and late season trips didn't get off the
ground. Midwinter provided some very
fine trips, particularly in the area just
beyond the western fringes of the mapped
trail system. Here are fine trails like
Lydia's, the Beaver, Wolf and others.
Some trips might be singled out as
more memorable .than others but to do so
would be a bit unfair to those leaders who
met with more difficult conditions. We
owe a debt of gratitude for general good
leadership all round, and most of all to
those who ran into adverse weather.
Participation ranged from five to seventeen,'
much the same as in previous years.
The OSC, incidentally, supplies less tourers
than the other sponsoring bodies, the Al
pine Club of Canada and the Canadian
Nordic Society. The country covered by
the tours is much more varied than that
within the trail system, and almost no one
is using it. Good snow conditions at the
start of the season would likely help to get
potential tourers out.
The Adirondack trip in March was, at
a half dozen, underpatronized, but much
enjoyed by those who went. This was the
smallest party in five years. The weather
was mild, producing good camping in the
log leanto shelters provided by the New
York State Conservation people. There was
some sticky snow at low levels with deep
powder on the higher, steeper parts of
Wright Peak. On the second day the party
skied up and down Mount Marcy. Although
the terrain is ·quite steep, on this
trip those skiing on wax moved faster and
more easily than those using climbing skis.
In summary, last winter's trips reflect
ed the varied conditions, but could have
catered to more people.
Local trips are scheduled on Sundays
throughout the skiing season. The leader
of each trip will handle organization de
tails for his trip. Please telephone him
during the preceding week (preferably between
7:00 and 9:00 in the evening) for
information on starting time and place.
Transportation may be arranged if necessary.
The remainder of the season will be de
tailed in the next issue of the Bulletin.
The trips are marked as easy (*),
average (**), or more difficult than average
(***) in order to give some idea of
ability required. Generally speaking, trips
range from about 9 to 20 miles. The terrain
to be covered also influences the
grading of the trip. Snow conditions are
not taken into account.
Ia descente, le slalom et le saut. Le combine
est une combinaison de la descente et
du slalom.
Pour terminer ajoutons qu'un vrai skieur
ne parle pas du haut et du bas d'une pente,
mais de l'amont et de l'aval (en amont, en
aval). On dit une station de ski et non un
centre de ski.
Nous ne pretendons pas avoir presente
ce qui precede on devrait possooer !'essentiel.
The Trail Riders this year prepared and
hosted the Annual Trail Skiers' Supper on
April 6th serving a Buffet to 125 members
and competing with the Liberal leadership
convention at the same time.
Last winter many of our club members
found out ·for the first time the extent of
our trail system, and the fun of either
packing a lunch or cooking a steak and eating
it in one of our trail lodges. There
was increased use of the trails and trail
lodges on the weekends and the trails
were also skied by many of our members
during the week.
