RAIDER FACTS
Origin of the Raiders
In 1984 the MSOE men’s basketball team, coached by Bob Peterson, viewed the film Raiders of the
Lost Ark. They were so thrilled by the movie that they wrote to Hollywood director Steven Spielberg,
asking permission to adopt the name “Raiders” as their team nickname. Spielberg wrote back, granting
permission. Previously, MSOE teams carried the nickname “Pats” for St. Patrick, the patron saint of
engineers. Since 1984, they have been known as the Raiders.
Rowdy Raiders
In 1996-97, the second year of Dan Harris’ administration as director of athletics, SAAC Chairman and
baseball pitcher Greg Beskow dubbed MSOE fans the “Rowdy Raiders.” The name caught on and has
been around ever since. In 2004 when the Kern Center opened, Harris designated Student Section C,
where the Rowdy Raiders were seated, as the “Red Sea.” All students in that section traditionally wear
the color red.
Roscoe Raider
In 1997, SAAC students sponsored a contest to name the new Raider mascot. The caricature for the
Raider was developed by the MSOE Marketing and Public Affairs Department, and the Olympus Sign
Company of Milwaukee created the costume. The name “Roscoe,” submitted by then-students Sarah
Alt ‘99 and Greg Beskow ‘99, emerged as the winning choice. Since that time, the MSOE mascot has
been known as “Roscoe Raider.” Many students have played the role of “Roscoe” over the years, and it
remains a desired position among today’s student body.
MSOE Fight Song
The MSOE fight song was written by members
of the MSOE Sound Engineers Pep Band,
and was first played at the groundbreaking
ceremony for the Kern Center in the spring of
2003. It is played whenever MSOE basketball
or hockey teams enter the arena.
On Broadway
A rock and roll tune originally recorded by the
Drifters. Since the Kern Center is on Broadway
(1245 N. Broadway), the song is played at
hockey games when the Raiders win.
Colors
MSOE’s colors are red and white. Black trim
may be used on some uniforms. The color
red is often associated with energy, passion,
desire, power, intensity and aggression. These
are all characteristics of an MSOE athlete.
White sends a message of simplicity, cleanliness,
precision and goodness. Again, this is
the image of MSOE athletes.

MSOE QUICK FACTS
Overview
At MSOE, theory is brought to life and reinforced for students through
extensive integration of laboratory experimentation. Understanding
theoretical concepts and knowing how to apply them is key to the
success of MSOE graduates. For nearly 110 years, MSOE has provided a
climate for students to become well-rounded, technologically experienced
graduates, and highly productive professionals and leaders.
Colleges and universities in
Division III place highest priority
on the overall quality of the
educational experience and on
the successful completion of all
students’ academic programs. They
seek to establish and maintain an
environment in which a studentathlete’s
athletic activities are
conducted as an integral part of
the student-athlete’s educational
experience, and in which coaches
play a signifi cant role as educators.
They also seek to establish and
maintain an environment that
values cultural diversity and gender
equity among their student-athletes
and athletics staff.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Building success with vision and
dedication has been a creed Dan Harris
has lived by most of his life. He brings
more than 45 years of coaching and
athletic director experience to one of
the fi nest NCAA Division III institutions
in the nation.
Harris has spent the last 18 years
as the director of athletics at MSOE,
where he is currently the longesttenured
athletic director in the Northern
Athletics Conference, and in the state
of Wisconsin on any level. Nationally,
Harris is among a handful of NCAA
administrators with more than 25 years of experience as a director
of athletics.
Known as a coach and administrator with distinction and
character, Harris has transformed MSOE into a vibrant NCAA Division
III program that offers its student-athletes 21 sports with facilities
that rival many Division I programs.
Under Harris’ watch, the Raiders have claimed 37 conference
championships and produced numerous all-conference athletes,
as well as academic and athletic All-American selections. He has
signifi cantly upgraded the level of the coaching staff, which has
greatly improved the level of competition of the MSOE program.
Twenty-three coaches have claimed Coach of the Year awards.
Prior to his career in athletic administration, Harris had a long
history as a collegiate soccer coach, including NCAA Division I stints
at the Air Force Academy and UW-Milwaukee. He has received seven
hall-of-fame honors including the fi rst inductee into the Wisconsin
Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame and was inducted into the UW-
Milwaukee Hall of Fame. Along with serving on many regional and
conference committees, he’s chaired the NCAA Div. III Ice Hockey
It’s not about getting a scholarship, getting drafted, or
making SportsCenter. It’s a deep need in us that comes
from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to
hustle, to sweat. We do it all for our teammates and
for the student in our calculus class that we don’t even
know. We don’t practice with a future Olympic wrestler;
we lift with a future doctor. We don’t run with a future
Wimbledon champion; we run with a future CEO.
It’s a bigger part of us than our friends and family
can understand. Sometimes we play for 2,000 fans;
sometimes 25. But we still play hard. You cheer for
us because you know us. You know more than just
our names. Like all of you, we are students fi rst. We
don’t sign autographs. But we do sign graduate school
applications, MCAT exams and student body petitions.
When we miss a kick or strike out, we don’t let down an
entire state. We only let down our teammates, coaches
Committee, served on the NCAA Div. III Baseball Committee and is
currently a member of the NCAA Div. III Men’s Soccer Committee.
He was instrumental in the founding of the Midwest Collegiate
Hockey Conference and served as that league’s fi rst president. In
recognition of his efforts, the MCHA’s championship trophy has
been named the Harris Cup in his honor. Harris was instrumental in
forming the Midwest Lacrosse Conference in 2009 and served as
the conference’s fi rst president.
When Harris took over the MSOE athletic reigns in 1995, he had
a vision for the department. In 2004, Harris oversaw the opening
of the Kern Center, which provides a home for many of the school’s
athletic teams and provides fi tness facilities for students, faculty,
and the community. In the spring of 2013, the university will unveil
a new athletic fi eld and parking complex directly across from the
Kern Center. The fi eld will provide a much-needed outdoor athletic
and recreation facility to both the MSOE campus and the community
as a whole.
As an athlete, Harris was a member of the New England
championship and NCAA Division I semifi nal men’s soccer team.
He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut
and his master’s from the University of Southern California. His
experience as an athletic director spans many levels; beginning
with Nathan Hale-Ray High School in Connecticut, a stint at UW-
Milwaukee, and Concordia University-Wisconsin before taking the
top post at MSOE in 1995.
Harris and his Wife Barbara have two adult children, Mark and
Angela. Mark and his wife Stephanie have three children, Lexi, Cade
and Landon. Dan and Barbara reside in Grafton, Wis.
Why We Play Division III Athletics
and fans. But the hurt is still the same. We train hard,
lift, throw, run, kick, tackle, shoot, dribble, and lift some
more, and in the morning we go to class. And in that
class we are nothing more than students.
It’s about pride—in ourselves, in our school. It’s about
our love and passion for the game. And when it’s over,
when we walk off that court or fi eld for the last time, our
hearts crumble. Those tears are real. But deep down
inside, we are very proud of ourselves.
We will forever be what few can claim … college
MEN’S BASKETBALL • COACHES
Head Coach Brian Miller
Assistant Coaches
Brian Miller returns for his ninth season at the helm of the men’s basketball team and looks to
continue his unprecedented success. In 2010-11, the Raiders broke the school record for wins
with 19. Miller had the six winningest seasons in a row in the school history from 2005-2011. The
Raiders have broken or tied the MSOE record for victories in a season four times during Miller’s
tenure.
Prior to his career at Concordia-Chicago (1999-2004), Miller also garnered experience coaching in
the Lake Michigan Conference while at Lakeland College from 1994-99. He helped lead the Muskies
to a regular season conference championship and two tournament championships during his tenure,
including the 1993-94 season when his team advanced to the NAIA Nationals.
Miller also brings a wealth of experience to the Athletic Department off the court, serving in his
dual role as the associate athletic director. He worked as the associate athletic director in addition
to his coaching post at Concordia-Chicago. He also served as the president of the Northern Illinois
and Iowa Conference in 2003-04. Miller received his bachelor’s of science in education from UW-
Milwaukee and his master’s degree at Lakeland College. He spent four years teaching social studies
and coaching at Loyal High School in Wisconsin before working as an admissions counselor at
Lakeland from 1992-94.
Kevin King ’98 has been with the MSOE basketball program for 16 years as an assistant coach. He played
four years as an MSOE Raider, serving as captain in his senior year. King’s duties include assisting with
scouting, recruiting, game planning, and coaching the MSOE junior varsity program. Currently, King is
employed by Harley-Davidson Motor Co. and is also pursuing a master’s in engineering management from
MSOE.
Davinci Wallace will begin his 11th year on the MSOE coaching staff. Wallace, a 2000 UW-Milwaukee
graduate, began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Racine Prairie High School before joining the
MSOE men’s basketball program. He currently works as an admission counselor at MSOE.
Tyrone Deacon is in his third season as a member of the MSOE coaching staff. Deacon was the head
boys’ basketball coach at Burlington Catholic Central High School during 2008-2009 when the team had a
15-9 record. He graduated from UW-Parkside with a degree in business management. Deacon played four
seasons for the Rangers and is eighth all-time at UW-Parkside in scoring and second all-time in assists
and three-point fi eld goals. Deacon currently resides in Burlington, Wis., and works for FHG Inc., a small
economic development company.
Brian Rutz is in his fi rst season as a member of the MSOE Coaching Staff. Rutz received his undergraduate
degree in 2009 from UWM and his Masters in Education from the University of Saint Mary’s (Kansas) in
2011. He currently resides in Milwaukee, Wis. and works as a Crisis Stabilizer for Wraparound, a managed
care program for Milwaukee County.

MEN’S BASKETBALL • 2012-13 SEASON PREVIEW
The MSOE men’s basketball team is coming off a 10-
15 season and a 7-9 conference record. The Raiders
graduate three starters from last year’s squad, but
look to some familiar faces to guide the Raiders to a
respectable NAC fi nish.
Junior point guard John Cording will captain the 2012-
2013 team.
Cording led the team in assists and steals with 79
and 34, respectively. However, as many MSOE guards
from the past, Cording will be asked not only to play
point guard, but increase his scoring value from past
seasons. In his freshman year, he averaged 6.3
points-per--game. Last season, Cording was second
on the team in scoring with a 9.2 points-per-game
average. In 2012, he will again be asked to increase
those numbers.
“John is a great leader both by example and verbally.
He is the heart and soul of this team,” said Miller.
“He plays extremely hard and sets the tone for our
team.”
Bande, a 6’5” forward from Madrid, Spain saw
considerable action both as a starter and key reserve
last season. Bande averaged 6.6 points and 3.6
rebounds per game, averaging just over 20 minutes
per game. This year his role is to be more aggressive
offensively than he was last year. “If Vic (Bande)
returns to his sophomore form and shoots the way
he is capable of, he will be one of the players to
watch this year,” said head coach Brian Miller. Bande
originally transferred here in 2010 from Lourdes
University, an NAIA school in Toledo, Ohio.
Defensively, Miller is counting on Jeremiah Erdmann
to anchor the Raider’s defense. “Jerry (Erdmann) is a
great defender on the ball and will be counted on to
take a role as a shut down defender.” Erdmann played
in all 25 games for the Raiders last year, averaging
16 minutes per game and 3.9 points per game.
MSOE will also look to the bench and freshmen to
step up and fi ll the void left by graduating starters
Oren Bloom, Cynerick Osinaike and Michael Ricciardi.
Jerome Singh, a 6’7” center was a spot starter for
MSOE in 2011, but will see considerable playing time
this year. Derek Watton, returning from an injuryredshirt
year will add athleticism and shooting to the
Raiders squad. Austin Stueck, 6’4” freshman forward,
could step in and be a playmaker for the Raiders in
2012.
Jessica Ott is in her 11th year as head coach of the MSOE women’s basketball program and her
Red and White Fund
More than ever students are participating in MSOE athletics, building a new generation
of men and women with strong bodies as well as strong minds. Under the guidance of
Dan Harris, director of athletics, MSOE teams are achieving continued success and the
number of conference championships is at an unprecedented level.
Students consistently mention the importance of a strong athletics program when
choosing to attend MSOE. The Kern Center (described on the back cover) showcases
MSOE’s commitment to meeting this need. For participating athletes and sports
enthusiasts alike, MSOE athletics is vital to the quality of campus life. Maintaining that
height quality requires community support, All MSOE athletes take part in fundraising
events to help pay the cost of the athletics program, but more support is needed to
help keep MSOE competitive. Through the Red and White Fund, you can help students
continue the MSOE tradition of success and provide the groundwork for future victories.
XWOMEN’S X BASKETBALL • SEASON PREVIEW
The MSOE women’s basketball team will have a challenge to
return to last year’s 17-10 overall record as they graduated four
starters, including Northern Athletic Conference Player of the Year
Carol Cayo. The team returns four from last year’s roster and only
one starter.
The second leading scorer on the team in 2011-12 was 5’11”
junior forward/center Shannon Larson, who played in 27 games,
averaging 8.5 points per game. She was also second on the team
in rebounds with 5.9 rebounds per game average. Larson also had
22 blocks on the season for MSOE. The Raiders will build their
offense around the returning starter and will look to last year’s
bench and the freshman class to strengthen the lineup.
A key cog for the 2012-13 season will be Bre’Ana Strong, a 6’
sophomore forward. She will be looked upon to help fi ll the void
left by Cayo and others. Strong played in all 27 games for the
Raiders last season, averaging 14 minutes per game and 3.4
rebounds per game. She was the leading scorer off the bench,
averaging 4.4 points per game.
Ali LoBue, a 5’4” sophomore guard played valuable minutes for
the Raiders last year, averaging 17.8 in 20 games played. She
had 26 assists and eight steals, averaging 3.0 points per game in
2011-12.
The Raiders also return senior Courtney Leaf. Leaf, averaged
4.2 minutes and played in 11 games for MSOE in 2011-12.
The NAC Coach of the year in 2011-12, Head Coach Jessica
Ott, will look to her incoming freshman class to add scoring
power to the MSOE roster. Megan Kroll, a 5’8” freshman guard
and Courtney Samuels, 5’11” freshman forward will enhance
the team’s on-court presence. Kroll is a point guard who will
look to shoot and score, while Samuels will help on the boards
defensively for the Raiders. Two-sport athletes Danielle Sopiarz
and Victoria Falcon will also see valuable minutes on the court
for MSOE. They are coming off a highly successful soccer season
helping the Raiders to a Northern Athletics Conference playoff
appearance.
MSOE will have a tough road ahead in 2012-13 as they play a
tough non-conference schedule that includes Wisconsin-Stevens
Point, where Ott is third on the all-time scoring list and Wisconsin
La-Crosse. Both schools are national powers in women’s
basketball. For the team to compete for the NAC title, the young
but talented squad must battle through the seven-team NAC
Northern division to earn a spot in the playoffs. Eight teams, four
from the North Division and four from the South Division make the
conference playoffs in search of a championship banner and an
automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
MSOE Kern Center
This 210,000-square-foot recreation, athletic, health and wellness facility exemplifies MSOE’s philosophy of a wellrounded
university experience.
This award-winning, contemporary brick and glass design, highlighted by a glass ellipse and running track that is
cantilevered over the street has become an icon in Milwaukee. The Kern Center’s five levels contain an Ice Arena, an
Arena for basketball and volleyball, Field House for a variety of sports, running track, two-story Fitness Center with
weights and cardio machines, Wrestling Room, classrooms, offices and parking.
The Kern Center provides students with ample access to fitness, whether they are participating in NCAA athletics,
intramural and club sports or individual fitness programs. It also is home to MSOE counselors, wellness workshops,
the Health Center and the Servant-Leadership Office.
The Kern Center was a privately funded $31 million project named after its major contributor, the Waukeshabased
Robert & Patricia Kern Family Foundation. Dr. Robert Kern is a university Regent. Other major donors include
Milwaukee businessman and MSOE Regent Dr. Eckhart Grohmann and his wife, Ischi, who donated funds to buy
the land.
Besides MSOE students, faculty and staff, memberships are available to alumni and the larger community. For
membership information, call (414) 277-2850.
