make it easier to refer to stops <strong>in</strong> specific contexts when <strong>the</strong> durational<br />

measurements are discussed. First, <strong>the</strong> stops are classified as fortis or<br />

lenis <strong>in</strong> accordance with <strong>the</strong> Area 1 distribution of preaspiration <strong>in</strong> Faroese<br />

(see Ch. 3, section 3.3 <strong>and</strong> Table 3–3). Second, <strong>the</strong> stops are assigned<br />

to one of two ma<strong>in</strong> syllable types, VC <strong>and</strong> VC / VCC. 1 The length<br />

marks <strong>in</strong>dicate that <strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>in</strong>volves both vocalic <strong>and</strong> consonantal<br />

quantity, but <strong>the</strong> data show that <strong>the</strong> contrast is expressed ma<strong>in</strong>ly through<br />

vowel duration (cf. section 4.3.2.5). Note that <strong>in</strong> clusters, stops followed<br />

by a voiced consonant are treated separately from stops followed by a<br />

voiceless consonant. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, a dist<strong>in</strong>ction is made between VCC<br />

<strong>and</strong> VC syllables. Third, stops occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> content words are dist<strong>in</strong>guished<br />

from stops that occur <strong>in</strong> function words.<br />
