together with some cationic streptococcal antigens are<br />

found in glomeruli. Subepithelial immune deposits appear<br />

as “humps.” They are antigen–antibody complexes that<br />

may also appear in the mesangium or occasionally in<br />

a subendothelial or intramembranous position. These<br />

immune deposits stain positively for IgG and complement<br />

by immunofluorescence. Affected children develop fever,<br />

nausea, oliguria, and hematuria within 2 weeks following<br />

a streptococcal sore throat or skin infection. Erythrocyte<br />

casts and mild proteinuria may be identified. Periorbital<br />

edema and hypertension may be observed upon examination.<br />

BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and ASO titer may also<br />
