An assay for the viability of cells in vitro. Vital dyes such as
eosin and Trypan blue are excluded by living cells; however,
the loss of cell membrane integrity by dead cells admits the
dye that stains the cell. The dye exclusion principle is used
in the microlymphocytotoxicity test employed for human
leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing in organ transplantation.
