symbolic ofthe euro2012
The logo ofthe european Championship 2012 is based on
the identities of poland and the ukraine. The folklore of
each country is closely entwined with plant-based ornamentation
–flowers are animportant element. The logo
consists of aflower with two cups –one in the colours of
each nation –that represent the two hosting countries.
The bud, on the other hand, is in the shape of ablossoming
ball that stands for the emotion and passion of
the tournament.
The hosts chose apair of twins playing football as the
tournament’s mascots; it symbolises the bond between
the two neighbours. The mascots differ only in the
colour combinations of their shirts and upstanding hair
–the red-and-white figure represents poland, whilst
the blue-and-yellow figure stands for the ukraine. The
mascots are named Slavek and Slavko –both names are
derived from the word “Slava”, meaning “glory” and “honour”
in both polish and ukrainian.
•The EURO2012 will be the last tournament with sixteen
competing for the prize.
•The estimated value of the trophy, which is made from
pure silver, lies at 20,000 euro.
•The largest stadium with acapacity of 70,000 is located
in kiev, followed by Warsaw’s stadium with 55,000 seats.
The smallest stadium is in lwiw and can hold 34,000
spectators.
•Around 1.5 million people will experience the games live
if every stadium is filled to capacity at every game. This
would break the current record of1.29 million spectators
set in england in 1996. Around 150 million fans are
expected to follow the event on television and radio.
•Approximately 6,000 volunteers will help organise the
The european Championships have taken
place every four years since 1960. The
tournament will be held for the 14th time
this year. itisthe second time that the
games will take place in eastern europe;
the first was the 1976 tournament in
Yugoslavia. it is also the second time that
the games will be hosted by two countries.
in contrast to the euro2008, which
was held in Austria and Switzerland, the
finals in poland and the ukraine will not
be characterised by short journeys –the
distance between stadiums can be as much
as 1,600 kilometres.
ukraine upgrades 3,000 km of highway
Asignificant proportion of the investments
relating to the european Championships
flowed not only into the eight stadiums but
also into the traffic infrastructure. Airports,
train lines and, last but not least, highways
had to be brought up to scratch for the
event. The ukrainian government tripled
the budget earmarked for road construc-
tion. nearly 3,000 kilometres of existing
routes were upgraded to highways or
roads of an equivalent quality. leading the
way is ahighway section of 600 kilometres;
it stretches across the country from
ambitious. The network would have had
to quadruple in size in just 15 years to
grow by 2,000 km. The plans to build an
additional 5,300 kilometres of dual carriageways
(expressways), which form the
spine of poland’s road traffic system, were
equally as ambitious.
“only” 906 km of new highway
The five-year plan (2008–2012) for
road construction required investments
amounting to 33 billion euro. The calculations
for both time and financial means
fell short of the mark, which is why the
initial plans were cut down to size at the
beginning of 2011: accordingly, “only”
906 km of highway and the expressway
stretches already under construction are
to be completed by June 2012. According
to the plans, certain sections of the A1
(Danzig–Łódź–Czech border), A2 (Germany–Warsaw–Belarus)
and A4 (Germany–Wroclaw–krakow–ukrainian
border)
highways will not be completed until after
the championships have taken place. This
will affect the A4 highway in particular, as
it will be used by fans crossing the borders
between countries.
Ammann has maintained asubsidiary in
poland since 1994. The ukrainian branch
abrief portrait ofpoland and the ukraine
was set up in 2008. The Asbut Company
has since established itself as Ammann’s
most important and very successful partner
in the ukraine.
70% ofall road surfaces in Poland are
produced by mixing plants from Ammann.
Just under 200 Ammann mixing plants are
currently operating in poland. poland has a
total of 340 operational mixing plants, of
which 20% are older models with outputs
of up to 30 t/h. This makes Ammann the
absolute market leader for mixing plants
in poland.
Ammann sold more than adozen large
plants with outputs between 240 and
300 t/h alone in connection with construction
measures relating to the european
Championships. All of the plants share the
characteristic trait of quick relocatability.
Four of the plants sold in the ukraine relate
directly to the european Championships.
Three of them are located where football
matches will take place: two JustBlack 120
Global 160 is in operation in lutsk, close
to the Border with poland. Ammann is currently
the strongest competitor of the local
plant manufacturer, whereby the difference
in price is considerable.
poland covers an area of approximately 312,000 km 2 and has apopulation of more than
38 million. its neighbouring countries are Germany to the west; Slovakia and the Czech republic
to the south; Belarus, lithuania and the ukraine to the east, and russia to the north.
north poland has 500 kilometres of coastline along the Baltic sea. poland also has more than
9.000 landlocked lakes with atotal surface area exceeding 10,000 m², making it one of the
countries with the most lakes per square kilometre inthe world. The capital Warsaw is home
to around 1.6 million citizens and is situated to the east of the country’s centre. The official
language is polish.
The ukraine covers an area of some 600,000 km 2 and is the second largest country in europe.
Although twice the size of poland, it has amere 8million more inhabitants.
The ukraine also has seven neighbouring countries: Belarus to the north; russia to the east;
moldavia and romania to the south-west; and poland, Slovakia and hungary to the west.
In the south, the country has atotal 2,700 kilometres of coastline along the Black Sea and,
to the east of the Crimean peninsula, along the Sea of Azov. The capital kiev is home to
2.8 million citizens. The official language is Ukrainian, although 50% ofthe population prefer
Ammann is currently taking shape. Sales in
poland are increasing year on year. Thousands
of Ammann machines are meanwhile
entering the market every year. Sales have
risen by around 25% inconnection with
the preparations for the european Championships.
Small wonder, then, that they are
to be found on every construction site that
has to do with the football tournament.
The heavy vibratory plates with three-shaft
technology were particularly in demand, as
were compactors of the medium weight
category (200–300 kg) and the new generation
of rammers. The car park extension
at Warsaw airport was aparticularly
spectacular sight. every machine at work
The AmmAnn Group mAGAzine, April 2012 people 11
ammann’s largest polish customer
janusz dróżdż –building roads for
the european championships
the company pbdim from the polish city of minsk iscurrently
operating anumber ofbuilding sites related to the football
tournament. the company was founded in1921 and is characterised
byamodest, down-to-earth demeanour reflected by
its name: company for the construction ofroads and bridges.
or in polish: przedsiębiorstwo budowy dróg imostów.
The company premises in minsk mazowieckie,
around 30 km east of Warsaw,
are equally as modest. Alittle more
resplendence would be quite befitting
given the company’s recent development
and performance. it was, after all,
one of the first to be privatised after the
fall of communism.
10 %ofpoland’s annual asphalt
production
Janusz Dróżdż, the 59-year-old director,
sees this as aclear competitive advantage.
At the time the field of activity
was limited to minsk mazowieckie and
the surrounding area, the company had
100 employees and two asphalt mixing
plants and was involved primarily in road
construction and maintenance. The goal,
however, was clearly defined: toexploit
early privatisation and grow faster than
other companies. Today, pBDim employs
aworkforce of more than 2,000. The
company continues to build roads and
bridges, but also railways, tunnels and
waste incineration plants. The group’s
20 asphalt mixing plants together produce
1.7 million tonnes of asphalt each
year. That equates to every tenth tonne
of asphalt produced in poland!
The company was soon bold enough to
take on large-scale projects in poland. in
fact, all of the large roads constructed
around the city of Warsaw bear the company’s
signature. The list of construction
projects associated with the european
Championships includes highway sections
on the A2 measuring 21 kilometres
and no less than 62 kilometres on the S8
expressway that connects Warsaw and
Wroclaw. pBDim is participating in the
construction of the second subway line
in Warsaw and is also responsible for
lowering the train station in lodz.
“to beglobally active would
be super”
pBDim acquired an Ammann uniglobe
plant specifically for the S8 project
which, incidentally, involves not only
62 kilometres of road construction but
everything that goes along with building
asection of highway, including 90
bridges. The plant has produced between
1,000 and 2,000 tonnes per day since
october 2011. Whether the plant will
remain situated near lodz will be decided
when the project is completed. After
all, road construction will continue in
the future, and the location is advantageous
from astrategic viewpoint. But
who knows …Janusz Dróżdż would see
adream come true if the company were
active not only in poland ahundred years
from now:
“it should be possible, at least in europe.
To be globally active would be super.
road construction will, however, remain
the foundation of our success”, says
Janusz Dróżdż.
“well-thought-out machine technology
is hugely important”
Janusz Dróżdż knows only too well that
“Well-thought-out, reliable machine
technology is hugely important as quality
will otherwise be jeopardised”. Sound
advice, agood contact between machine
manufacturer and customer and
areliable service are also important in
his view.
The company has worked together with
Ammann for many years. To be precise, it
started on the day Ammann first participated
in an event held for poland’s
road-building industry back in the 1990s.
“products from Ammann are the best
one can currently get on the market,
when one compares quality and price.
it is because of our satisfaction with
Ammann that the entire machine fleet at
work on our expressway project is from
Ammann”, says Janusz Dróżdż in explaining
his decision.

south-east asia – aregion with
differingmarket requirements
ammann has successfully cultivated the south-east asian market with
aproprietary subsidiary since 2006. the size of the catchment area
in the region, its geographic expansion and widely differing market
requirements specific tothe country make upanumber ofchallenges.
The climate, the reachability and availability
of resources and the demands placed
on asphalt and its production process
differ enormously. The malaysian market,
for instance, mainly prefers continuous
asphalt production plants, whilst the other
countries bank largely on batch processing
technology. Apreference for batch
production plants is only discernible in malaysia
in the vicinity of large cities and in
conjunction with demanding construction
projects (highways, airports, etc.). in con-
trast to malaysia, the market in indonesia
has aclear preference for batch production
plants. The country is spread over
numerous islands and therefore represents
ahuge challenge with regard totravel and
delivery routes. production output rates
from 100 to 150 t/h are the norm in this
very price-sensitive market.
Quality at rock-bottom prices
Singapore isthe most developed country
in south-east Asia. The country plays a
key role in the region due to its central
position. The demand for asphalt is not
particularly great, but those placed on
quality and technology are all the more
so. rock-bottom prices are common to
all of the markets in the region. Ammann
has aligned its strategy accordingly and
endeavours to meet market requirements
through adapted products and
local manufacture. The situation is further
compounded by highly fragmented sales
regions across numerous islands, making
personal customer contact on site avery
time-intensive undertaking.
towards higher quality in mixing plant
is gaining significance. Ammann’s asphalt
continuous asphalt
production without waste
drum mixing plants have amajor disadvantage: they produce
waste every time the asphalt recipe changes orthe plant is
switched on or off. the latest successes achieved incontinuous
asphalt production with atwin-shaft paddle mixer –the ammann
contimix –now offers promising improvements.
Waste results from separating the new aggregate
on account of the different dwell
times required for the different aggregate
grains in the mixer. equipping the plant with
acontinuous twin-shaft paddle mixer and a
special bypass silo from Ammann compensates
these effects. Sophisticated mechanical
features and control technology enable compensation
to be controlled to an extent that
minimises or eliminates aggregate waste.
Ammann has already installed the new technology
in anumber of mixing plants. They
help the road construction companies to
save aggregate and in doing so contribute to
more environmentally friendly roads.
contiMix Zerowaste is the remedy
Continuous asphalt production with a
twin-shaft paddle mixer combined with zero-
Waste technology resolves the waste problem
inherent to drum mixing plants; it also
increases output per hour thanks to acontinuous
mixing process. The waste accumulated
during asphalt production can be minimised by
aminor change to the production process by
separating the drying and heating phases from
the mixing process (see also page 26):
– installing aspecial insulated intermediate
silo for hot aggregate between the dryer
and the mixer routes separated aggregate
into the intermediate silo before itenters
the mixer. The intermediate silo is installed
on weighing cells and is connected to the
hot elevator via ametering outlet.
– The first mix of abatch ejected from
the drum has avery high proportion of
rough aggregate. This product from the
start phase of production is stored in the

intermediate silo. The mass flow through
the intermediate silo (compensator) rises
continuously as more ofthe smaller particles
can exit the mixing drum.
– Acontinuous mass flow indicates that the
drying process has reached ahomogeneous
level and that the grain size of the aggregate
exiting the drum is the same size as
the aggregate being fed into the drum. The
weighing cells enable the mixing engineer to
determine the exact quantity of aggregate in
the silo at any time. As soon as the control
system detects aconsistent mass flow, the
hot aggregate is routed into the twin-shaft
paddle mixer to start the production of hot
asphalt. The very first tonne produced by this
production plant meets the required quality
standards. mixing does not involve any loss
of bitumen or hot aggregate.
– The aggregate remains stored in the
intermediate silo when production ends.
As the asphalt mix remaining at the end of
production has avery high proportion of
fine-grain aggregate, the sum of the grain
size distribution in the compensator equates
to the quality requirements for high-quality
asphalt.
– The mixer is started on batch operation
once all the aggregate has been removed
from the mixer and the outlet valve is
closed. The aggregate is routed from the
intermediate silo into the mixer; bitumen
these images are athing of the past: waste from the production of asphalt.
is then added and asphalt produced in the
same way as in aconventional batch mixing
plant. it is not necessary to heat any more
aggregate as all of the aggregate fed into
the drum is used for asphalt production.
The entire process is controlled automatically
by the as1 software that also monitors the
contimix –continuous production with aseparate mixer:
the new alternative
compensation and mixing plant. The plant engineer
and plant operator can rest assured that
all of the relevant process steps are reproducibly
executed thanks to an entirely automated
compensation process.
Contimix plants from Ammann offer asolution to the demand for high-quality continuous
mixing plants with the superior mixing properties of atwin-shaft paddle mixer. Ammann
has developed amethod of eliminating the major disadvantages of continuous asphalt production
with aconventional drum mixing plant. Atwin-shaft paddle mixer is at the heart of
the Contimix concept. it can be used for both batch and continuous production, achieving a
high degree of production flexibility thanks to its hybrid design.
The Contimix concept offers arange of advantages including, for instance, clearly separated
heating and mixing processes resulting in lower emission values. Furthermore, the plant
concept masters one of the major disadvantages of drum mixing plants as it enables the
simple, precise and flexible feed of all the ingredients required for modern mix production,
such as fibre oradditives, directly into the mixer. The addition of heat-sensitive bitumen
outside of the dryer is particularly advantageous. The plant enables the production of
hot-mix asphalt using foamed bitumen or other methods as well as so-called “cold mixes”
that also work with foamed bitumen. All of these mixes can be produced without heating
the aggregate.

roads of the world: part 4
short, old and no question
of miserliness
As astreet in its own right it has linked union street and river street since 1887: “ebenezer place” in the scottish port of wick.
Scots are generally reputed to be miserly.
This prejudice reared its head once again
when anew “shortest road in the world”
found its way into the Guinness Book of
records 2006. The previous holder of this accolade
was elgin Street in the town of Bacup
in lancashire with alength of 5.2 metres.
“ebenezer place” in the Scottish port of Wick
is, however, 2.5 metres shorter, asCraig
Glenday, editor in chief for the Guinness
book, can confirm having visited the location
in person. The miniature measurement of
“ebenezer place” is just 2.06 m. And things
become even clearer when expressed in
the country’s typical units of measurement:
6feet and 9inches is significantly less than
17 feet and 2inches.
128 years old and long forgotten
The reason why the street in the
8,000-strong regional capital of county
Caithness has gained fame so late in its
existence is due to the fact that it was not included
in the city map until 2006. high time
indeed, given that the street was constructed
at the same time as mackays hotel back in
1883! Atthe time, the city council requested
the owner, Alexander Sinclair, togive the
street running in front of the building’s shortest
front its own name. “ebenezer place” was
officially acknowledged as astreet in its own
right in 1887, as it links union Street with
river Street.
tworecords in the same area
2.06 metres are not really alot, but there
is still enough space for adoor. “ebenezer
place 1”, the street’s only address, belongs
to abistro. murray lamont, the owner of
the hotel and bistro, was always convinced
that the world record rightly belonged to
“ebenezer place”. “We now have asecond
place of interest in addition to ‘old pulteney’,
the northernmost whisky distillery on the
Scottish mainland”. Whisky expert Jim murray
crowned its 21-year-old Single malt the
best in the world in its class in his “Whisky
Bible 2012”.
But back to the street. All one really had to
do was to read the works of robert louis
Stevenson very carefully. The world-famous
author often stayed in Wick as his father
worked on constructing the new breakwater
in the port. in his book “Treasure island” Stevenson
recommends: “if you ever happen to
be in Caithness you must visit Wick and look
for ‘ebenezer place’. if you are atall person
it could be that you are taller than ebenezer
place is long.”

“hohle gasse” in switzerland
“He has to come through this hollow!” –these are reportedly the words william tell spoke shortly before he shot the Habsburg reeve Hermann Gessler with his
crossbow near the lake of lucerne in switzerland.
The “hohle Gasse” is located in küssnacht
am rigi in the heart of Switzerland and is
part of the historic traffic route leading from
zurich through zug, immensee, küssnacht
and Flüelen to St. Gotthard. in 2010, the
Swiss national council placed the route under
protection as an endangered cultural monument
on account of its outstanding historic
significance and extraordinary, traditional
underfoot substance.
From aconstructional viewpoint hohle
Gasse is aman-made alley. What makes it so
special: itishere that respectable mountain
farmer William Tell is said to have shot the
habsburg reeve hermann Gessler in 1307.
The reeve bullied his subjects, for example by
demanding they bow down before his hat.
When Tell refused to do so he was forced to
shoot an apple perched on his son’s head
with his crossbow. Ashort time and numerous
dramatic events later, helay in ambush
and shot the reeve in the alley named hohle
Gasse. his act was partly responsible for
triggering the legendary liberation of the
Swiss confederates. William Tell is therefore
one ofSwitzerland’s most important figures
of legend. From the late middle Ages to
the current day, Tell has been considered
the epitome of pluckiness, willpower and
determination and is asymbolic figure of
independence and alove of freedom.
his world fame is founded on the stage
drama “William Tell” by Friedrich Schiller that
received its première inWeimar in 1804. “he
has to come through this hollow!” –these
are the words known throughout the world.

The events were small-scale to start with but
Some have taken part in more than ten
events. others are discovering them for the first
Ammann received an assignment from
marti AG in 2010 to convert and modernise
amarini asphalt mixing plant in Walliswil
near niederbipp.
The job had tobecarried out intwo stages to
keep interruptions toasphalt mixing as short
as possible and towait for the arrival of official
permits. The first phase lasted from January to
mid-march 2011; during this time the control
system was converted, the burner replaced
and e-Bit tanks installed. The second phase
lasted from June to August and saw the installation
of arAh-100 %feed system whilst the
mixing plant continued with normal production
operations. it was important that installation
work did not impede the flow of traffic to
and from the asphalt mixing plant and gravel
plant. production had to be interrupted for a
few days only to accommodate the integration
and commissioning of the rAh-100 %system.
The clients proved to be more than happy with
the way the project was managed and with
the result of the conversion.
scope of delivery
maintenance for heavyweights: the drum grinding machine
The many types of roller produced byAmmann over the past 100 years
were all used for road surface compaction and surface sealing. They are
renowned for their durability, asisany other product from Ammann,
but that does not protect the heavyweights from normal wear and tear.
Scratches and surface deformations acquired over the course of time
can have anegative impact on the surface quality of the compacted
material. Ammann has therefore always offered antidotes in the form
of machines for optimum maintenance and servicing. The drum grinder
pictured here dates back to the year 1949 and uses asophisticated
mechanism that keeps both the grinder and the roller drum inmotion.
Acrank is used to guide the grinder continuously over the entire drum
surface until it is smoothened all round and ready to go back to work.
The photo also shows that wear and tear can also occur in the archives.
The glass negative used to document the machine was broken at some
stage in its existence, leading to two clearly visible cracks.
