Introduction
Flat Roofs
Over the past few years, there have been
major advances and improvements in the
materials used in modern roofing
technology. The specifier now has
renewed confidence to take full
advantage of the benefits of a flat roof
and low pitched roof design concept.
Flat roofs allow greater planning and
design flexibility - roof-top gardens,
terracing, patios, car parks, building
services and ventilation equipment,
delivery areas and provision for adding
additional storeys at a later date. All can
be accommodated in a flat roof design.
Extensive or irregular shaped buildings
can be roofed more quickly, easily and
cost effectively than a pitched roof.
Internal condensation is less of a risk
because a flat roof uses less airspace
than a pitched roof. In addition, the need
to heat and illuminate voids is eliminated.
Flat roofs allow easy access to natural
light and because of the simple
construction, internal partitioning is easy.
This is especially advantageous for
commercial or industrial buildings.
The Need for Rainwater Outlets
Any flat area needs careful design to
ensure efficient removal of surface water.
Traditionally, water from a flat roof or
other structure is channelled by way of a
slope to a rainwater pipe. Leaks can often
occur at the junction of the membrane
and the rainwater pipe.
To overcome this potential problem,
ACO Fulbora rainwater outlets provide a
watertight joint between the membrane
and the outlet by mechanically clamping
the membrane to the sump unit. Tried and
tested for over 40 years, ACO Fulbora
outlets have been used successfully on all
types of flat roof construction.
Rainwater engineering
Hydraulic Design Considerations
Overview
The following notes are intended as a
guide to the specifier who is designing a
rainwater drainage system for a roof. It is
recommended that reference is made to
British Standard BS EN 12056 : 2000
Gravity Drainage Systems Inside
Buildings - Part 3 : Roof drainage, layout
and calculation for a comprehensive
design guide.
For any rainwater drainage system to
work effectively and reliably, due account
must be taken of the following
considerations:
■ Geographical location
■ Rainfall intensity
■ Effective catchment area of roof
■ Risk category of building
■ Hydraulic capacity of the drainage
system(s) employed
Geographical Location
Rainfall intensity has a direct impact on
the performance requirements of any
rainwater drainage system. For roofs and
paved areas, it is normally impracticable
to guard against very infrequent,
extremely heavy rainfall situations and so
the designer should aim to strike a
balance between the cost of the drainage
system, the risk category of the building
and the frequency and subsequent
consequences of flooding.
The drainage system for roofs and paved
areas should be capable of coping with
the intense rainfall that accompanies
summer thunderstorms.
The UK experiences complex and varied
rainfall patterns. For example, surprisingly,
although the upland areas of northern and
western parts of the British Isles
experience higher average annual rainfall
than the lowland areas, the lowland areas
experience more frequent and more
intense short duration rainfall than the
upland areas. British Standard BS EN
12056 : 2000 may be referred to for
further information and guidance on this
topic.
A rainfall intensity of 75 mm/hr (0.02 l/s/
m 2 ) is used throughout this design
catalogue.
Flow Rate Calculation
The flow rate Q, from roofs, paved areas
and vertical walls and surfaces is
calculated as follows and assumes that all
surfaces are impermeable:
Q = A x I litres/second
3600
where
Q = Volumetric flow rate (l/s)
A = Effective catchment area (m²)
I = Rainfall intensity (75 mm/hr)

Effective Catchment Area of Roofs
Pitched Roofs
The effective catchment area of a freely
exposed pitched roof draining to an eaves
or parapet wall gutter is equal to the plan
area of the roof plus half its maximum
elevation area.
Catchment Area A = (f x l) + (g/2 x l) (m²)
= l(f + g/2) (m²)
All linear dimensions in metres.
Flat Roofs & Paved Areas
For a monopitch flat roof or paved area
with a freely exposed horizontal surface,
the effective catchment area is equal to
the plan area of the area to be drained as
shown below:
For a flat roof with a dual pitch, split the
roof up into discrete areas to isolate the
catchment areas as follows:
Rainwater engineering
Effective Catchment Area of Roofs
Flat Roofs & Paved Areas with Adjacent Vertical Surfaces
Flat roofs or paved areas that are
adjacent to vertical walls and/or glazed
surfaces will be subjected to an increased
hydraulic load due to the effects of wind
driven rain against these vertical surfaces
and subsequently running off onto the
roof.
For a flat roof exposed to a single wall as
shown in Figure 4, assume the effective
catchment area to be half the exposed
vertical area of the wall and is shown as
follows:
From Figure 2, Catchment Area B = a x b (m²)
Vertical Wall Catchment Area E = a x H/2 (m²)
Total Catchment Area = (a x b) + (a x H/2) (m²)
All linear dimensions in metres.
Practical Design Tips
When designing an engineered rainwater
scheme, the following design hints are
suggested:
■ Do not design for the maximum outlet
hydraulic capacity, allow a 10% factor
of safety margin for intense storms
and leaf/debris blockage.
Roof Catchment Area B = a x b (m²)
Similarly, for a flat roof exposed to two or
more vertical walls forming an angle or
bay, the assumed resulting wind direction
requires that the combined areas of the
walls should be considered together as
follows:
Vertical Wall Catchment Area E = a x H/2 (m²)
Vertical Wall Catchment Area F = b x h/2 (m²)
Total Catchment Area = (a x b) + ½√ (E²+ F² - 2F x Cos θ) (m²)
All linear dimensions in metres; angles in degrees.
■ Always allow for a back-up outlet,
even though only one outlet may be
required.
■ Rainwater outlets should be inspected
and cleaned at least every 6 months
to ensure reliable and continuous
operation.

HP Range
Description
The ACO Fulbora HP range of rainwater
outlets provides a comprehensive
selection of high performance rainwater
outlet solutions for most domestic,
industrial and commercial applications
involving flat roofs, balconies and terracing.
High Flow Rate
Advanced design features encourage a
higher flow rate of water through the
outlet compared to conventional systems
by reducing the amount of air that is
drawn into the outlet. If allowed to go
unchecked, a vortex will form as the
water enters the outlet - the same effect
can be seen in the bath or a sink when
the plug is removed.
Product Features
■ Cost effective drainage solution - high
flow rates minimises number of
outlets required.
■ Secure grating to prevent vandalism
and theft.
■ Comprehensive product range for
most applications.
■ Durable, corrosion resistant
construction.
■ Gun-metal optionally available.
At the centre of the vortex, a void is
naturally formed as the water spirals
through the outlet. Under these
conditions, both water and air are drawn
into the outlet significantly reducing
efficiency. For maximum flow rate
efficiency, only water should enter the
outlet. This may result in the use of fewer
outlets for a given installation.
The ACO Fulbora HP range of outlets
provide anti-vortex design features to
minimise this effect and a twofold design
approach is adopted to achieve this. On
all circular domed gratings an inverted
cup arrangement is integrated within the
grating to breakdown the vortex effect
within the grating and in addition, the leaf
guard geometry of the gratings is
optimised to encourage water to flow
radially into the outlet, thereby minimising
the vortex effect outside of the grating.
Reduced Installation Costs
Compared to conventional outlets, high
performance outlets mean either fewer
outlets/pipe/groundworks with reduced
installation costs, or greater security in
extreme rainfall conditions.
Secure Gratings
All gratings for the HP range of products
are secured with stainless steel fixings
that require either a socket wrench or
spanner for removal and replacement.
This provides additional security to
prevent theft or vandalism.

Membrane Clamp
The roof membrane is positively secured
into the outlet body by a clamp and is
secured by 2 stainless steel fixings. The
membrane clamp is serrated on the
underside for improved membrane clamp
grip performance. The outlet design
ensures the integrity of the seal between
the clamp and body is not disturbed when
the grating is removed for maintenance
during the life of the installation.
Materials
All products are manufactured from LM6
grade aluminium alloy to BS 1490 as
resistance.
Screwed outlets are recommended where
connection to the outlet occurs within the
thickness of the slab and threaded
connections will form a completely gastight
seal.
Vertical screw outlets have a female
parallel thread to BS 21 : 1985 for
connecting directly to tubes conforming
to BS 1387 : 1985 which is supplied with
a taper male thread. This ensures a
completely watertight seal when screwed
fully home into the outlet body. A range of
PVC adaptors are available from ACO
Fulbora to allow connection to aluminium
pipework, socketed and socketless cast
iron pipework and PVC pipework.
HP 45° & 90° Spigot Outlets
These angled problem solving units are
particularly relevant to suit more complex
pipe run detail. Pipework connections as
per vertical spigot details.
HP Balcony Spigot Outlet
The balcony outlet provides discrete safe
drainage for balconies and walkways.
Supplied complete with a D-shaped flat
grating, the outlet can be installed against
a wall. The grating is supplied with holes
to receive either 50 mm, 75 mm or
100 mm nominal bore rainwater
downpipes. These are easily cut on site to
suit the application.
HP Two-Way Screw Outlet
The two-way outlet is designed to be used
at the junction of roofs and parapet walls,
or wherever a horizontal and vertical
surface meet. Available to fit pipe sizes of
50 mm, 75 mm and 100 mm. This
flexible design of outlet allows either
horizontal or vertical outflow take-off.
Pipework connections as per vertical
screw details.
HP Gully Spigot Outlet
The gully outlet is designed to fit into
valley gutters and is supplied with a
vertical spigot outlet and dome grating.
Pipework connections as per vertical
spigot details.
HP Refurbishment Outlet
When an existing flat roof is being
upgraded, the refurbishment outlet is
designed to fit inside the existing outlet
and pipework with minimal disruption
without the need to remove the original
outlet. The aluminium body incorporates a
wide fixing flange to enhance the bond
with roofing membranes and does not
suffer the distortion effects during the
application of torched membranes.
Outlets are supplied with a flexible finned
pipe seal ensuring a watertight
connection to existing pipework. The ease
of use and minimal disruption to the
existing rainwater system makes this an
extremely cost effective solution when
upgrading flat roofs.

HP Range Accessories
A wide range of accessories is available
for the ACO Fulbora HP range of
rainwater outlets allowing easy installation
in common and not so common
applications of roof construction,
including warm and inverted roofs,
terraces and concealed outlets under
raised paving slabs.
Raising Rings
Raising rings are used where it is
necessary to raise the level of the dome
grating above the outlet body, for
example an inverted roof construction.
With the exception of the Balcony Outlets
(HP-BO) and Gully Outlets (HP-GO), raising
rings will only accept dome gratings or
Terrace Grates as the raising rings will
not accept the standard flat grates.
Raising rings are easily cut with a
hacksaw on site if required to match
installation requirements, i.e. to suit
paving slabs. Stainless steel extension
fixings are supplied with each raising ring.
Raising rings are also available for
Balcony Outlets and Gully Outlets. All
raising rings are manufactured from LM6
aluminium alloy to BS 1490 and are
optionally available in gun metal to
BS 1400. Suffix sales code with ‘GM’ for
this option.
PVC Adaptors
PVC adaptors are available for threaded
outlets - HP Vertical Screw (HP-TD); and
HP Two-Way (HP-2W) systems. PVC
adaptors provide a quick and convenient
connection to standard PVC pipework.
The adaptors are suitable for connection
to all types of pipe systems including cast
iron socketed or socketless systems and
are assembled using PTFE tape to ensure
a watertight connection. Manufactured
from tough PVC-u, the adaptors are
supplied with a male thread and
chamfered spigot for easy connection to
PVC pipes. PVC adaptors are suitable for
direct connection to:
■ Cast Iron pipework to BS 416:1973
or EN 877.
■ PVC O-ring socketed pipe to
BS 4514:1983.
Deck Supports
Deck supports are used where ACO
Fulbora HP rainwater outlets are installed
in metal deck roof constructions, providing
a stable and secure interface between the
outlet and roof. Deck Supports are
manufactured from 1.5 mm steel sheet
and finished primed in a red oxide paint
finish. Suitable for all types of metal deck
roofing.
Terrace Grates
Terrace grates are designed for installations
with terraced paving slabs or block
paviors. Terrace grates can only be used
with circular raising rings as described
above. A slotted fixing detail allows 90°
rotational movement to accommodate
slab/pavior patterns.

Appendix 1 Material Selection
Overview
This section includes a brief insight into
the materials that the rainwater drainage
products featured in this Product
Catalogue and Design Guide are
manufactured from.
In certain applications, it is vital to
understand the long term operational
effects that will occur if products are not
specified accurately or installed correctly.
Aluminium Alloys
Aluminium alloys are very common and
can be found in a wide range of
applications ranging from cooking utensils
to spacecraft. The material is
commercially available in excess of 99%
purity and is used primarily for its high
resistance to corrosion, lightness and
strength.
Comparing similar products, aluminium
alloys weigh around one-third as much as
equivalent mild steel and stainless steel
products and compared to mild steel,
they have a much better corrosion
resistance to atmospheric conditions.
Because aluminium alloys are strong,
lightweight, have good corrosion
resistance, are cost effective and have
excellent casting properties, this material
is an obvious first choice for rainwater
outlets and floor gullies. Additionally,
being non-magnetic, aluminium will not
attract ferrous particles that could
otherwise cause silt traps and long term
maintenance issues.
ACO Fulbora aluminium rainwater outlets,
shower drains and floor drains use LM6
grade aluminium alloy to BS 1490. LM6
exhibits excellent resistance to corrosion
in both atmospheric and marine
environments compared to other
aluminium alloys, and is resistant to
sulphate attack for curing concrete.
When exposed to the atmosphere, a thin
invisible aluminium oxide film forms on the
surface of the material that protects the
material from further oxidation.
Gun-metal
Gun metal possesses good tensile
strength and corrosion resistant
properties and is used in many bearing
and marine applications. ACO Fulbora
rainwater outlets are available in gunmetal
when bi-metallic corrosion
resistance arising from lead or copper
materials is a potential risk.
Gun-metal is an alloy of copper, tin and
zinc. Admiralty gun-metal typically has a
composition of 88% copper, 10% tin and
2% zinc.
Galvanised Mild Steel
Mild steel is a convenient, ductile, easily
worked and cost effective material that
finds many uses in everyday applications
around us.
In its raw state, mild steel offers no
resistance to corrosion and quickly forms
a familiar rust (ferric oxide) on its surface
unless precautions are taken to prevent
oxidation taking place.
Galvanising is a process that is commonly
used to prevent corrosion and essentially
consists of a layer of zinc applied to the
surface of the steel. ACO Fulbora use a
‘hot dip’ process of dipping the
component into a vat of molten zinc.
Galvanic Corrosion
Galvanic corrosion occurs when two
dissimilar metals are in electrical contact
and connected by an electrolyte. An
electrolyte conducts electricity and can
be water solutions containing salts or
acids - and need not be concentrated for
the effect to take place.
The effects of galvanic corrosion begin to
play an important part when an aluminium
rainwater outlet is used in conjunction
with metallic membranes, such as lead or
copper.
The Electromotive Series provides an
insight to the corrosion effects between
dissimilar materials.

The Electromotive Series
The susceptibility of different metals to
corrosion whilst in contact with each
other depends upon the difference
between the contact potentials. The
greater the potential difference, the
greater the tendency for corrosion. The
metal with the higher negative potential
forms the anode and is corroded
preferentially.
Some examples from the Electromotive
Series are shown opposite for illustration.
Material Selection Tips
■ For applications when dissimilar
materials are in contact with each
other wherever possible, select
materials to be as close as possible
to each other in the Electromotive
Series. For example, if a roof is
copper clad, select a gun-metal outlet
as gun-metal is around 88% copper,
this closely matches the cladding
material.
■ Where dissimilar metals cannot be
readily avoided, care must be taken
to electrically insulate the adjacent
materials. For example where lead is
dressed into an aluminium alloy
outlet, carefully paint the aluminium
body and clamp components with
good quality bitumen paint or use an
insulating gasket material such as
neoprene sponge. Ideally, a gun-metal
outlet should be used in conjunction
with lead clad roofs.
■ The effects of galvanic corrosion can
be accelerated in saline
environments. Caution should be
observed with rainwater outlet
applications close to coastal regions.
Warm Roof
A warm roof is where the main mass of
the roof structure lies below the main
thermal insulation. The waterproof
Inverted Roof
An inverted roof is a form of warm roof
where the main mass of the roof structure
lies below the main thermal insulation,
however, the waterproof membrane lies
beneath the thermal insulation.
Un-insulated Roof
A roof without thermal insulation. This
type of construction is only permitted in
non-habitable buildings, e.g. garages.
of safety margin for intense storms
and leaf/debris blockage.
✓ Always allow for a back-up outlet,
even though only one outlet may be
required.
✓ Rainwater outlets should be inspected
and cleaned at least every 6 months
to ensure reliable and continuous
operation.
Threaded Outlets
For all ACO Fulbora threaded outlets (HP
Vertical Screw and Two-Way outlets) are
provided with female parallel threads
conforming to BS 21:1985 for direct
connection of threaded tube conforming
to BS 1387:1985. This tube is supplied
with a taper male thread conforming to
BS 21:1985, which ensures a watertight
joint when fully screwed into the unit.
Threaded outlets are particularly
recommended where a connection to the
outlet is made within the thickness of the
concrete slab. In these applications, the
threaded connection creates a completely
watertight seal.
Where a PVC-u screw thread connector
(STC) is used in conjunction with threaded
outlets, the screw thread connector
should be assembled with PTFE tape to
ensure a watertight seal.
Balcony Outlets
The flat grating is configured with an
array of eccentric grating slots that can
be readily cut on site with a hacksaw to
accommodate a downpipe.
Mk 3 Raising Rings
Where applicable, raising rings for the Mk
3 range of rainwater outlets are simply
assembled to the clamp ring by the same
twist action that fixes the dome grate to
the clamp. No fixings or loose
components are required.
For increased height requirements, Mk 3
raising rings can be cascaded together.
The dome grating attaches to the raising
ring by the same action.
Mk 3 raising rings cannot cannot be cut to suit a
specific height requirement. Raising rings
from the Mk3 and HP range of products
are not not interchangeable.
HP Circular Raising Rings
HP raising rings can be used for domed
grating outlets and terrace gratings only.
HP raising rings cannot cannot be used with flat
gratings.
HP raising rings are secured with
stainless steel fixings that are supplied
with each raising ring product.
Where required, the HP raising rings may
be easily cut on site to a specific height
using a hacksaw (for example, when using
a terrace grate in conjunction with paving
slabs).
Balcony/Gully Outlet Raising
Rings
Raising rings for balcony outlets and gully
outlets are available and perform a similar
function as the HP Circular raising rings
as previously described. Separate
stainless steel fixings are supplied with
each unit.
Deck Supports
ACO deck supports are recommended for
metal decked roof construction and are
suitable for installation on all types of
metal decked roofs. Deck supports have
pre-drilled holes for ease of fixing.
Refurbishment Outlet
Refurbishment outlets are designed to
conveniently fit within the existing
rainwater outlet of the roof that is being
refurbished, which means there is no
need to remove the existing rainwater
outlet.
Refurbishment outlets incorporate a high
performance domed grating and
optimised tail pipe to maximise flow
through the unit. The labyrinth finned seal
ensures a watertight connection to the
existing pipework. Two sealable access
points within the body enable PU foam to
be injected to fill the void between the old
and new outlet.
Step 1
Strip back all roof coverings to the deck
level. Clean out old outlet with wire brush
and flush with clean water.
Step 2
Form timber frame around old outlet and
lay insulation board/vapour barrier
(35 mm minimum).
Step 3
Check clearance and trim tail pipe to
length with hacksaw if necessary.
Step 4
Push on flexible labyrinth seal.
Step 5
Flush with clean water to lubricate and
insert tail pipe into existing pipework.
Seat flange on timber frame.
Step 6
Screw flange to timber frame.
Step 7
Inject PU foam through one port for 5
seconds. Remove any surplus.
Step 8
Blank off ports with captive screws.
Complete installation and
weatherproofing.
